Taurik was born in the Raal province on Vulcan. He was brought up as most Vulcans, attending the Vulcan Learning Center and excelling. Upon graduation, Taurik attended the Vulcan Science Academy. During his first year at the Academy, the Hobus Supernova occurred. Taurik quickly realized that the Federation would be in a perilous position in the aftermath of the supernova, as the Romulans would be looking for a new home and to regather their strength following the destruction of Romulus. After graduating, he joined the Vulcan Expeditionary Group and was assigned to a Vulcan starship. There, he rose to the rank of sublieutenant. However, during his service, he came to the conclusion that the methods of the Vulcan Expeditionary Group were insufficient. He determined that joining Starfleet would be a more efficient course of action. Against his parents wishes, he applied and was accepted into Starfleet. Starfleet required him to complete a year at the Academy to acclimate himself to the differences between the two organizations.

At the VSA, he focused on interstellar communications cryptography. In Starfleet, he majored in Intelligence, minoring in Communications.
