Operations & HCO

I have some difficulty accepting a difference between these two departments on any vessel, but especially on a Starbase. In my mind, HCO is three small departments (Helm, Communications, and Operations) that were lumped together for the sake of efficiency. Now, on a Starbase, Helm is replaced by Flight Control (unless you have a really, really fast Starbase.. or your engineers are doing Bad Things(tm) to the station-keeping thrusters), and Communications and Operations go way up in terms of importance simply because there is so much more to take care of. A Starbase makes a natural hub of activity, after all.

So, really, I don't care if we call it Operations or HCO (although calling is HCO on a vessel with no true Helm seems kinda silly), but they should be one department, not two separate ones.

Thoughts? -RogueGypsy47 13:10, 2 May 2007 (CDT)

I agree. Helm tends to disappear, other than regular checkups on teh station's position. Operations becomes the all encompassing departments, where "helm" is only the aforementioned afterthought, communications is also a sub-dependent of OPS, but of much more importance, engineering is (and always has been) a sub-department of OPS, likewise security. If "helm" needs more to do, than it takes a more "airport"-like approach with scheduling and monitoring incoming and outgoing vessels. -Varaan 09:04, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
Dropped by and couldn't help but take a look. ;-) Technically, it's all Operations. But if you're going with the "airport" approach, it's technical name is Flight Control. <g> I do seem to recall some starbases employed fighter wings and Wing Commanders (WCs) in the years past. That could give Helm something to do. DCody 21:12, 4 May 2007 (CDT)
  • nods* Alright.. I see no great outpouring of objections, so I will go ahead and make the small change. It's not terribly much, but it does help to clarify things a little. And, DCody, Flight Control is listed in there as one of the 'duties' or 'sub-sections' there.. : ) Thank you for your feedback, though! -RogueGypsy47 18:07, 5 May 2007 (CDT)
Take a look here: StarBase 118 Command Center. It talks about the positions in the command center. There is always some difference with the actual PC roster, but what's on that page shows you the break-down of different departments. --Wolf /talk page 11:51, 6 May 2007 (CDT)

Worth Keeping?

Is this page actually necessary? Most of what is here is already on on the Master Crew list... It just strikes me as a bit redundant. --Quinn /talk page 11:56, 7 January 2009 (EST)

  • Especially since specific pages exist to explain each Starfleet department and duty post already. It doesn't add much, I don't think. Then again, if I was an ensign newly assigned to the Starbase, would I consult it, looking for information on how to do my job? Possibly. It does seem kind of like a placeholder, though - not enough info to warrant it, but too little to actually mark it as useful. Onewhoisseveral 19:08, 7 January 2009 (EST)
