Shortly after his promotion and a brief shore leave the USS 'Oumuamua departed for another assignment in the Gamma Quadrant. Assigned to the diplomatic team, Commodore V'Airu left Major Wes Greaves in command of the 'Oumuamua. During this window the 'Oumuamua encountered an alien vessel made entirely of organic material and inhabited by living plants and trees called the Eesse. Jack found himself assigned to his first away mission since joining the ship and discovered that not all situations call for a Tactical officer but instead call for a balanced officer to help solve a problem. During this assignment he was also exposed to his first 'First Contact' scenario when his away team encountered another species called the Suclese who were hiding via a phase shifting ability and feeding on the life blood of the Eesse. This 'First Contact' had many different elements of difficulty, most of which was communications based. Although tension was high at times during the 'First Contact' negotiations with the Suclese, Jack found this a fantastic learning experience. Later in the mission he joined Lieutenant Corelli and Lieutenant jg Ulasso on another away mission, this time to explore an uncharted world that the Eesse seemed to be destined or drawn to by what they called the "Great Light". Here Jack found himself and his crew members is a second 'First Contact' situation. This time with a Eesse who served as a lone beacon on this planet, staged here thousands of years before to serve as a guide across the stars to the rest of the Eesse civilization. Jack found both of these 'First Contact' situations to be entirely different and although prepared for 'First Contact', he felt that now having actually been through it, he was better prepared for what lay ahead.

On stardate 239910.20, for his involvement in helping to translate the Suclese language in the midst of a fraught situation and discovering the planet at the end of the Eesse’s journey, respectively Jack was awarded the Explorer's Ribbon and Innovation Ribbon by his command team. At the same time he was elevated up to the Assistant Chief Tactical Officers position by his direct department head, Major Greaves.
