Gordon grew up on the Trill homeworld and attended primary school there. An extremely intelligent boy, he had been fascinated with starships and exploration from an early age. Also, like nearly all Trill, he dreamed of being chosen as a host for a simbiont, all the more because his mother was a Guardian at the Caves of Mak'ala. In addition to his studies on Trill with the Simbiosis Commission, Gordon spent a lot of time with his favorite grandfather, Telek, who was a scientist on Vulcan.
