The team found the Cube initially appearing abandoned, however with the exception of lowered temperature and the lack of drones, the Cube was fully functional. The Captain accessed a console, and discovered the drones are in a state of hibernation while the Cube hides in the Badlands. Jovenan suspected that if it weren't for the Artemis’ advanced sensors, they would have missed the Cube. Moving onwards to a place where the Captain found unusual energy readings, Sadar managed to modify her tricorder so that it could scan the drone lifesigns, discovering in the process that there were hundreds of drones present. Panicky, Sadar tried calling the Artemis, but there was no response. The away team noticed that the drones were congregating to the place where they had previously noticed unusual energy readings, so they proceeded walking there. They couldn't identify the source from a distance, but they did learn that it was cannibalizing the rest of the Cube to power itself. There, the team discovered a large room with a device that shone bright light. Jovenan's analysis showed that it might be a massive subspace device, though she could only speculate it could be used for communication, transporting, drone control or as a weapon. Sadar also read some 80k Borg drone lifesigns, though Jovenan suspected that some may be echoes from the device.

Running away, the team began to search for an escape, such as a Borg transporter, and when Jovenan noticed something emitting from a nearby corridor, they ran there, finding the corridor engulfed in bright light.

As the bright light wades, the Artemis teams find themselves face to face with a team from Amity Outpost in the Delta Quadrant, commanded by Lt Commander Robin Hopper. The Amity team had been in pursue of Changelings, who had been stealing Borg technology from the Outpost, when they were transported to the other side of the Galaxy. Concerned of the alliance of the Borg and the Changelings, the Artemis team recounts their events, when the Borg attack them again, this time adapted to their phasers. The teams escape, exploring their options, but the large group is slow and vulnerable in the narrow corridors. Meanwhile, the Cube is reactivating, causing the risk of Artemis being overpowered. Instead, they broke out to two teams, one team lead by Hopper locating the Changelings, and the other, lead by MacKenzie, trying to find a way out of the Cube. MacKenzie takes Jovenan, Doctor Jansen Orrey, Doctor Samantha Richards, LtJG Kaito Moore and Lt Charlena Vanlith to her team. Before they depart, Beck gave Jovenan his medkit, including half of the entire away team's load of the anti-Borg serum Sadar had procured them. After brief introductions, the team consider their options, hijacking a Borg transporter or blowing stuff up. MacKenzie chooses the latter option.

The team makes a plan to rig explosions to damage the shield generators just enough for the Artemis to beam them up. After some success in advancing to the generators, they surprised by a drone attacking them from behind. Shocked, Richards instinctively attacks the drone barehanded and is almost assimilated, but Moore manages to fight off and kill the drone. Jovenan, feeling protective over the terrified fellow planetary scientist, is angered by the attack that put Richards in danger. As the team moves on, escaping their pursuers, Jovenan, enraged by the injustice she sees in the Borg actions, overloads a phaser pistol and throws it at the drones.
