Jaseb, stepping into his shift the day after Artemis docked at DS9, found himself in a bizarre dichotomy. On one hand, it was just another day, a routine he was all too familiar with. On the other, the ship had just traversed the unfathomable forces of time and space, courtesy of its nemesis, the all-powerful CloQ.

Even though the ship and its crew had been missing for months, and who knew where who had been exposed to what, Jaseb quickly learned that specific wheels of bureaucracy were turning regardless of what had happened yesterday. As the saying goes, "Work is legless; it's not going anywhere." Similarly, the consequences of his previous shore leave indiscretions loomed over him, waiting to be fulfilled.

Jaseb chose to start with the after-mission debriefing with Commander Dakora, hoping he would make a good impression and get reassigned to SFI or promoted, whichever comes first. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/W8a0f4EPm6M When the next day arrives...], Ens. Jaseb Chevalier, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.05</ref>

But the debriefing did go quickly sideways, burying any chances of him leaving a good impression. On the contrary, it left Jaseb in a bad spot, drawing him into his trauma from the mission even more. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/J4nRBRv6G4A The whisper of two broken wings], Ens. |Title = Shaw wants you to do all the PADDwork
|Content = As Jaseb left the First Officer's office, a colleague from his department, quartermaster CPO Ral Shaw, approached him. She was all nice and friendly about it, but in the end, she planned to throw him under the bus for a problem she didn't want to deal with. Shaw made sure to add his name to the documentation. This way, if her discovery turned out to be one big PADDwork horror she expected it to be, she wouldn't be solely responsible for dealing with authorities and could avoid dealing with all the paperwork by making it a problem in the hands of the supervising officer. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/R5zFkusB_Bw Hopefully no one is missing some decouplers], CPO. Jaseb Chevalier, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.06</ref> After finishing his assignment, Jaseb reluctantly seeks medical help for the phantom pains he's been experiencing since his last mission. He wonders if he's still carrying some hidden injury from the mission or if there's a lingering piece of time-traveled shrapnel inside him. The medical examination unfolds as anticipated, uncovering that Jaseb's pain is not rooted in a physical ailment but is instead attributed to psychological factors. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/InCdcjjyHiE Body is fit for duty, the soul... |Title = It's a scientific exercise, not live ammunition training!
|Content = During the ship's shore leave at DS9, Lt. Jovenan took advantage of everyone's free time and organized a scientific training session on the nearby planet Bajor. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/Z2OSYfadkC4 Anyone ready for a field trip?], Lt. Jovenan, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.05</ref> Jaseb joined the exercise alongside fellow ensigns, Savel and Gnai, as well as crewman Renirs. Jaseb made a lighthearted joke before they began about the bad luck he had experienced at Savel's side during their last mission, unaware that this field trip would lead to another entry in his diary titled "Why Not Travel with Savel at His Side." <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/1JO0Uaf6iBs It's more fun to crash if you raise your hands and tendrils like this…], Ens. Jaseb Chevalier, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.07</ref> As they train in the Rakantha province, a region of Bajor that was heavily polluted and devastated during the Cardassian occupation decades ago, Jaseb is vigilant to avoid any potential poisoning, irradiation or else. Jaseb has been placed in a team with his longtime friend, Ensign Savel. Jaseb convinced Savel to take the lead in their team, with the two of them working closely together as buddies. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/hzQTfHOrXE4 Quest to find the purpose outside our function], Ens. Jaseb Chevalier, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.10</ref> During their expedition to the province, Jaseb was engrossed in delving into the sorrowful history of the area using scientific methods. This allowed him to dedicate more of his attention to organizing his jumbled thoughts, compelling him to confront not only the events that transpired on CloQ's Betazed thirty years ago, but also to gain a deeper understanding of the cruelty one can cause to another. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/wC30OzMG5Ts The science of long-forgotten suffering], Ens. However, their educational field trip was suddenly interrupted when the second group of the landing party stumbled upon an unexpected surprise. While exploring a nearby cave, they discovered a long-forgotten smuggler's hideout and warehouse, secured by a minefield. Jaseb and Savel immediately set out to help. After briefly considering the possibilities, they quickly assessed the situation, weighing the options for aiding their injured colleagues who were trapped. Without hesitation, they entered the cave, determined to evacuate the wounded and provide assistance. Their strategy seemed solid, and they managed to solve the problem successfully. However, their triumph was marred when Jaseb accidentally triggered one of the mines himself. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/620KYVQmZfA Click], Ens. Jaseb Chevalier, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.25</ref>

Jaseb's brain started to race to find a solution to the problem he was facing. There were so many options... but the more he explored the mine he stood on, the more he realized that what he had stepped on would not be possible to estimate at all. It was an old, mechanical bounding mine - an instrument of unnecessary cruelty with one purpose only -- killing as many people as possible. It was a cruel irony. His unorthodox training at the Academy had stripped him of any hope, leaving him with a singular realization - he could not intimidate Savel, Jovenan, or anyone else who might come to his aid. With a heavy heart, he bid farewell to his beloved and resigned himself to his inevitable fate. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/6CBz432jNXU It’s gonna be okay], Ens. Jaseb Chevalier, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240104.29</ref>

Jaseb, critically wounded with one leg shattered and torn off, was evacuated by Lt. Jovenan, whom he had been determined to protect. She she risked her life anyway and did not left him behind. This wasn't Starfleet way. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/gmywa2m97ak I won't leave you behind], Lt. Jovenan, {{USS|Artemis|A}}, 240105.01</ref>

He expected to die instantly, but the Prophets and constructors of the device of terror had different plans for him. The Bajoran Militia swooped in to rescue the wounded Renirs, Jo, and Jaseb altogether with Gnai and Savel, rushing them to safety at the trauma center in Rakantha Central Hospital. Jaseb was immediately rushed into life-saving surgery, teetering on the brink of death. Despite the dire circumstances, the hospital staff worked tirelessly to save his life, refusing to let the darkness win. <ref> [https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-artemis/c/gDB4F7N5gdE Give Me a Reason to leave a Forest], Ens. |Title = Long way to recovery ahead...
|Content = After undergoing a critical operation and a brief recovery in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, Jaseb was transported to Sickbay aboard the Artemis. He remained unconscious for five arduous days, his body slowly recuperating from the severe injuries sustained.

When he recovered - at least physically - he was released for home care and a partial return to duty with very basic administrative assignment. Upon his return, he was greeted by his roommate, Ensign Gnai, and they were both thrilled to finally have the opportunity to get to know each other.

Except they are now three in the quarters - Damien, his boyfriend, had become extremely overprotective and attentive towards Jaseb and moved with Jaseb. However, this only deepened Jaseb's feelings of despair, as he had no escape from his inner torment. Jaseb resorted to solitude, and more Damien gave Jaseb attention, the more unbearable for Damien Jaseb become. Even his efforts to get back Jaseb on his feet as soon as possible did not succeed, because there are things that even a will can't succeed, as his physiotherapist - Chief Cliffhigh said to Jaseb.

Jaseb finally broke, and had a bloody fight with Damien. Damien left him, and Jaseb realizes after the incident that Lieutenant Sadar was right so many days ago - he needs psychological help.
