Anara was born shortly after the end of Cardassian occupation of Bajor. Her father was an engineer, who had grown up fixing things on Bajor under limited conditions; her mother used faith to help guide herself and her community through the trials of the occupation. Anara’s father would join the Bajoran Militia following the end of the occupation, while her mother became a prylar (and later ranjen) of the Bajoran religion. Anara’s grandfather, Anara Lakrim, was an active member of the Resistance, and regaled her with tales of combat as child.
Anara’s father was stationed on Deep Space 9 for much of her childhood. Rather than leading to a separation or feeling of abandonment, this lead Anara to idolize her father, and to learn everything she could about engineering and the rest of the galaxy. This put her at odds with her mother, who raised her in a conservative tradition of the Bajoran religion, leading Anara to chafe at the seemingly strict rules her mother imposed on the household. This conflict came to a head after a teenage Anara returned from a trip to DS9, shouting “They’re only aliens!” when her mother tried to make her go to yet another religious ceremony venerating the Prophets. Although she later came to an understanding with her mother, Anara’s relationship with her mother and her faith have been things she continues to struggle with.
In keeping with her desire to become an engineer like her father, Anara attended the University of Bajor for two years on an engineering track (2388-2390). However, her years of trips to DS9 had given her a taste for the greater galaxy, and Bajor’s new status as a Federation member (as of 2388) allowed her a unique opportunity to see the stars. She transferred to Starfleet Academy, continuing as an engineering major. Her two years of university education at Bajor granted several transfer credits, which allowed Anara some freedom for electives. She took a few extra engineering courses, but decided to take several command and some security and tactical classes to round out her Starfleet education.
