Hawkins grew up in a working class environment. His father is a hands-on engineer, not a theorist or scholar. His mother, while functioning as an unofficial diplomat when the need arises, is a trader and a merchant at heart. Hawkins retains his roots in these down to earth values, and despite his advanced learning in science and engineering, still enjoys the simple pleasures of life. | |||

While Hawkins thrives under pressure with problems to solve, he doesn't know it. This causes him to second guess his actions and come down on himself hard for the tiniest mistakes. Helping run the ship while growing up, as well as acting in an a limited XO capacity on board his parents ship gives him the potential for command. Unfortunately due to still being naive and trusting, he is prone to miss clues to that duplicity is at work and may quite easily be duped or taken advantage of. The breadth and depth of his unusually large amount of life experiences is mitigated by feeling inferior to people who have focused on the best way of doing things and honing that ability. | |||
