Mission Start
Commanding officer's log, stardate 240109.01.
The USS Octavia E Butler and the Unity Dow are currently en route to the Dyson ring inhabited by the I-Kiyo peoples, a powerful, nonaligned group whose ancestors may have created the ring in ages past. The Dow is under its own power, for now, though the T'Pan and the Regina of the Gamma Flotilla Expeditionary Task Force will meet us at the I-Kiyo ring, the T'Pan to evacuate the Dow's crew, the Regina to provide engineering and operations support.
After the multimodal investigations at Omicron Victor IV, I feel at least partially confident in concluding that the Dow and its crew were subject to spatiotemporal phasing at the behest of the being encountered by Commander Promontory and his team on the surface of OV IV-B, and perhaps by others among both crews in various dreams and hallucinations. That entity's exact identity remains a mystery, though I intend to devote some time over this leave period to unraveling that mystery.
My crew has certainly earned their leave. While the Dow will leave as soon as possible with the T'Pan and the Regina, the Butler and her crew will remain at the I-Kiyo ring for two weeks of leave, followed by a period of rest & repair at Deep Space 14 prior to our next assignment. I have already seen a few requests for a stopover at Port Coray along the way to DS14, and I think we can accommodate them.
Truly, it seems impossible that we succeeded. Not only has the Dow been recovered, but so have most of its crew. I want in particular to recognize the work of the Dow away teams, especially including the final team that piloted the Dow away from OV IV-B, as well as the support personnel who worked to rescue the Dow's crew.
Well, as I said, the crew has earned their leave. I hope they enjoy their time in this wholly unusual environment and amongst its substantial and welcoming population.

A Star-Crossed Tune
Sevantha Saa, nursing heartbreak, finds herself at a Starfleet cadet celebration at the 602 Club in San Francisco. After an emotional confrontation with her feelings, she unexpectedly connects with Morro Caras, an Orion engineering student, for a night of catharsis and escapism. |
Sevantha Saa attends a celebration at the 602 Club reluctantly, trying to suppress her emotions over her former partner Lorian’s new engagement. Despite her best efforts, the environment intensifies her feelings of heartbreak and frustration, particularly when she collides with Morro Caras, a towering, jovial Orion engineering cadet.
Their meeting sparks an unexpected exchange. Morro, carefree and enjoying the music, invites Sevantha to dance, sensing her distress. Initially hesitant, Sevantha decides to join him on the dance floor to escape her turmoil. Morro’s graceful and uninhibited dancing contrasts starkly with Sevantha’s overthinking. His encouragement helps her loosen up momentarily, but the presence of Lorian and his fiancée T’Vel triggers a flood of emotions, leading her to retreat. Morro follows her outside, offering genuine concern and support. He reveals an unexpected depth, focusing entirely on her well-being for the evening. This act of kindness and understanding leads Sevantha to accept his offer of comfort and distraction. The night culminates in a shared intimate connection that allows Sevantha a brief reprieve from her heartbreak. However, the next morning, reality sets in as she realizes she is late for an exam. Quietly leaving Morro’s dorm without saying much, she reflects on the night’s significance but prioritizes her responsibilities as her Starfleet journey continues. |
Fleeting Moments
This occurs shortly after Stendhal received her transfer orders. Lieutenant Drex and Counselor Karen Stendhal meet by chance in a Federal hub's bar, leading to an insightful conversation about art, past experiences, and personal boundaries. |
Lieutenant Drex, seated at a table in a bar overlooking the upper promenade of a Federal hub, gazes out into the vast, star-studded void, reflecting on his sister Ayra's wedding. Immersed in his thoughts, Drex muses on the simplicity of the ceremony and his brief return to Kalus. As time passes, he begins sketching his surroundings, his attention drawn to a tall Klingon and later a woman sitting a few tables away, seemingly lost in her thoughts.
The woman, Karen Stendhal, a Betazoid-human hybrid, is recently back from a long leave of absence and awaiting her reassignment to the USS Octavia E Butler. Sensing Drex's gaze with her telepathic abilities, she turns to find the Denobulan sketching her. Intrigued, she approaches him, briefly mistaking him for someone she once knew, and introduces herself. Drex, caught off guard by her directness, responds with polite amusement, introducing himself simply as "Drex." Their conversation takes a lighthearted turn when Karen comments on Drex's observation of her thoughts, humorously asking where her "florin" (coin) for the thoughts was. In response, Drex offers her his sketchbook, which contains various drawings, including one of her, albeit unfinished. Karen expresses admiration for his work, especially noting the rarity of using real pencil and paper in a digital age. Drex humbly offers her any of his completed sketches, though Karen finds it difficult to choose, impressed by the intricate shading and attention to detail. The pair continue discussing their respective artistic styles, with Karen revealing her penchant for abstract painting, which contrasts with Drex's more realistic and memory-based drawings. The conversation shifts as Karen recognizes one of Drex's portraits as a Starfleet officer named Alora DeVeau, the chief science officer on Denali Station. Coincidentally, Alora was a former colleague of Karen's at Starbase 118, sparking a moment of shared connection between them. Drex reveals that Alora is his current superior, further intertwining their conversation with mutual acquaintances. As their dialogue deepens, Karen speaks about her family, including her Betazoid heritage and time spent on the shores of Lake Mitzawal on Betazed. Drex, intrigued but also slightly wary of her telepathic abilities, begins to feel discomfort. Karen, sensing this, offers to teach him meditation techniques to help guard his mind from unintentional intrusions, but Drex politely declines, instead asking her to simply refrain from reading his thoughts. Despite his gentle request, Karen can’t help but pick up on Drex's internal conflict, though she assures him she has no intention of probing further. The conversation grows lighter again, with Drex asking more about Karen’s background, including her time on Earth and her family’s vineyard in Provence, France. She describes the beauty of her homeland with vivid imagery, comparing it to a living painting, and shares a poem written by her father. As she speaks, Drex listens intently, though distracted by the revelation of her Betazoid heritage. As Karen describes the challenges she faced during her leave of absence, caused by an adverse reaction to an alien artifact due to her mixed DNA, Drex grows more contemplative, reflecting on his own family and past experiences. Eventually, Karen, sensing the conversation has run its course, rises from her seat, bids Drex farewell, and leaves the bar with a polite but hurried exit. Drex, left alone with his thoughts, contemplates the unusual but engaging interaction, still unsure about how comfortable he is with the idea of telepathic beings sensing his inner thoughts. |
Rox's Return: A Day with Peri
This takes place before Rox transfers to the Chin'toka. Rox, regaining her powers temporarily, surprises Peri for a day of adventure across time and space, reflecting on friendships, dreams, and future aspirations. |
Rox unexpectedly appears in Peri's quarters, thanks to a temporary gift of powers from Quinta (a member of the Q Continuum). The friends, reunited after a long time apart, embark on an adventure starting in Italy. Rox uses her powers to transport them to Pompeii, just before the city's catastrophic volcanic eruption. As the disaster looms, they narrowly escape, ending up in a peaceful Sicilian town in 1926.
Over lunch in a seaside café, Rox shares a strange dream about meeting her father in an ancient Gamma Quadrant building and her ongoing search for her identity. Peri reassures her friend and suggests they investigate the meaning of terms from Rox's dream. Their conversation shifts to updates on mutual friends, with Peri describing life aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler and sharing news of promotions within the crew. As they reflect on their careers, Rox admits to feeling stuck in her nursing role and expresses a desire to explore new paths, possibly in diplomacy or even as a mission specialist. The day ends with the two friends enjoying a quiet walk along the beach, savoring the rare opportunity to be together once again. |
Aftermath
This takes place after Kessler returned to the ship. Nesre and Jack discuss the impact of his return after his mysterious disappearance, grappling with emotions, past decisions, and the path forward. |
Nesre Salo and Jack Kessler find themselves in the quiet aftermath of an emotional reunion following Jack's return from captivity. The joy of his return is tempered by the challenges ahead, as they both struggle to process the ordeal. The conversation begins with the mundane—food and simple pleasantries—but soon shifts to the deeper issues at hand. Jack explains his unexpected treatment by the Zet, who kept him in a comfortable, even luxurious, environment as a prisoner, a revelation that surprises Nesre.
As they talk, Jack acknowledges the emotional toll his absence took on both Nesre and Krystal. He expresses regret for leaving them, driven by a misguided belief that he was protecting them by not revealing his mission to find his parents. This decision, he realizes, was more about avoiding being talked out of it than protecting his loved ones. Nesre, while understanding, struggles with her own feelings of hurt and betrayal, compounded by the impact on Krystal. When Jack suggests that he might need to let go of his search for his parents, Nesre responds with caution. She encourages him to consider that his journey may not be over and acknowledges that it will take time to process everything. She suggests that while he should remain dedicated to finding his family, he also needs to prioritize being present for Krystal and herself. Nesre advises him to focus on small, everyday actions to rebuild trust and maintain his connection with them, rather than making grand gestures. The conversation ends with Jack expressing his commitment to making amends and balancing his search for his parents with his responsibilities to Nesre and Krystal. He understands that rebuilding their trust will take time and patience, and he's determined to navigate this difficult path with their needs in mind. |
Unexpected Debts and Unwanted Growth
This takes place shortly after Caras arrives on the Butler. A subspace call between Sevantha Saa and her former acquaintance Morro Caras leads to a heated discussion about cultural misunderstandings and an urgent medical mystery that requires both Sevantha’s medical expertise and her roommate Gwen’ora Tasen’s scientific insight. |
Sevantha Saa receives a subspace call in her quarters from Morro Caras, an Orion officer she had previously encountered at Starfleet Academy. Their initial conversation quickly turns tense as Morro implies that Sevantha owes him a debt for comforting her during an emotionally vulnerable evening months prior. Morro, who had acted in his capacity as a trained Orion Pleasure Seeker, viewed their night together as a transaction. Sevantha, however, had interpreted it as an emotional distraction during a difficult time, with no notion of owing him anything. The conversation highlights a deep cultural misunderstanding between them regarding intimacy and favors, with Sevantha emphasizing that Betazoid and Terran cultures do not attach debts to acts of emotional support or comfort. Gwen’ora, Sevantha’s Ba’ku roommate, listens in on the conversation, offering occasional insight, especially as the conversation becomes more awkward due to Morro's assumptions about debts and relationships.
The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Morro reveals that he is experiencing a disturbing medical issue: blue, root-like veins are growing on his back and spreading throughout his body. He explains that the veins appeared after he applied a cream he purchased at a night market in the Gamma Quadrant, a region known for its exotic and sometimes dangerous goods. The growing veins are causing him discomfort, including a tingling, "pins and needles" sensation, but he has avoided going to his ship's medical staff for fear of reprimand and judgment. Sevantha and Gwen quickly shift into a problem-solving mode, analyzing the symptoms and potential causes. Sevantha, as a medical officer, suspects a parasitic organism or plant might be involved, while Gwen, a science officer with a focus on biology, considers the possibility of a symbiotic plant life form. They ask Morro for more details, including when the symptoms began, whether he has experienced any other unusual effects, and if he has had increased appetite or fever. Morro reveals he has been consuming an unusually large amount of food, indicating the organism may be feeding off his body’s energy. As they discuss potential treatments, Gwen suggests trying to make Morro an unsuitable host for the organism. They settle on the idea of inducing an immune response by making him ill, specifically by having him drink Kanar, a strong Cardassian liquor that had previously made Morro sick. The theory is that by inflaming his immune system, the organism will find his body inhospitable and detach. Morro reluctantly agrees to try this solution. After consuming a significant amount of Kanar, Morro begins to feel the effects of the alcohol, both physically and emotionally. He becomes increasingly sick, and the women can see the veins on his body pulsating as the organism begins to react to the hostile environment. As he becomes violently ill, the parasite starts to detach itself from his skin, confirming their theory. Morro’s visible distress reveals deeper emotional vulnerabilities as he opens up about feeling lonely and disconnected aboard his current ship. Sevantha and Gwen reassure him that they are willing to help him not out of debt, but out of genuine concern and friendship. They even offer him support beyond this medical crisis, encouraging him to reach out more often. As Morro successfully contains the detached organism in a makeshift tank, the conversation winds down. Sevantha suggests he take the creature to a sanctuary, such as the one on New Bajor, where it can be studied safely. Morro thanks the two officers, although Sevantha insists he owes them nothing, reaffirming that they acted out of goodwill. Morro, now more comfortable, hints at wanting to stay in contact with them and offers his engineering expertise in return, marking the beginning of a possible new friendship. After the call ends, Sevantha and Gwen reflect on the intense conversation. Sevantha, emotionally drained from the exchange, retreats into herself momentarily, asking Gwen for some space to process the events. Gwen, sensing her roommate’s need for a break, heads out to get food for both of them, leaving Sevantha time to recover from the emotional rollercoaster of the past few hours. |
Lhandon and Toxin: Before the Storm
This takes place before the start of the last mission. Lhandon Nilsen and Toxin Arlill struggle with growing tension in their friendship as they navigate personal and professional challenges on the USS Octavia E Butler. |
Lhandon Nilsen has felt a growing unease in his relationship with Toxin Arlill, despite his own successes as Assistant Chief of Operations. When Toxin arrives at Nilsen’s quarters for a long-awaited dinner, their interactions are friendly but marked by Nilsen’s underlying discomfort. Toxin brings wine, and the two exchange jokes, with Toxin pranking Nilsen by manipulating the ship’s computer to play music inappropriately. They eventually settle into a lighthearted conversation about cooking, but Toxin’s comments about Nilsen’s unconventional dish spark frustration in Nilsen.
As the evening progresses, Nilsen’s growing anger culminates in an outburst after Toxin leaves, revealing Nilsen’s struggle to control his temper, especially after all he has endured. He vents his frustration by smashing his dinner, feeling more angry at himself than at Toxin. In the days following, Nilsen distances himself from Toxin by avoiding shared shifts. Meanwhile, Toxin realizes he may have pushed Nilsen too far, feeling increasingly guilty and concerned that he’s jeopardized their friendship. |
I-Kiyo Dyson Ring
First Exhaustifer
Avander Promontory records a log summarizing the recent mission concerning the USS Unity Dow, reflecting on the strange events, and prepares for upcoming duties. |
After waking from a brief nap in his quarters, Avander Promontory, the First Officer, records his official log. He reflects on the recently completed mission investigating the USS Unity Dow, a sister ship to the Octavia E. Butler. The Dow had gone silent in the OVIV system, and its crew had been found phase-shifted due to a transporter malfunction involving a corrupted connection to an Earth fruit. Many senior officers were lost, and those recovered displayed symptoms of hallucinations, paranoia, and eventual death from prolonged exposure to the planet OVIV. Avander notes the hostile psionic and physical assaults encountered from a powerful entity resembling a changeling, though with far more disturbing abilities.
The Dominion’s successor, the UDP, had prohibited access to OVIV, and Avander recommended the planet be placed under General Order 7, like Talos IV, to prevent future visits. Despite these challenges, the crew of the Butler managed to recover the Dow and its surviving crew. Avander anticipates the need for counseling for both the Dow and Butler crew due to the trauma of the mission. As the ship approaches the neutral I'Kiyo system to rendezvous with other Federation ships, Avander looks forward to fostering a positive relationship with the I'Kiyo and notes their request for engineering assistance. After ending the log, Avander reviews his to-do list, including department head check-ins and signing off on a transfer. He contemplates his exhaustion and the looming tasks but is reluctant to record his personal log, given the nightmares plaguing him since the mission. Reflecting on the absence of a former colleague, Sherlock, Avander decides to prepare himself for his upcoming responsibilities, starting with changing back into his uniform. |
Healing and Reflection in Sickbay
The USS Octavia E. Butler's away team returns from a dangerous mission, severely injured and suffering from radiation poisoning, leading to tense interactions in sickbay as they receive treatment. |
After successfully completing a perilous mission involving the Unity Dow, the away team from the USS Octavia E. Butler, including Lieutenant Lhandon Nilsen, 2nd Lieutenant Ithri Sh’shelor, Ensign Morro Caras, Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, and others, return to the ship in a critical state. They are all injured, with varying degrees of severity, and suffering from radiation poisoning due to the mission's extreme conditions. The team stumbles into sickbay, where Lhandon insists that Sh’shelor, who is badly injured with a dislocated shoulder and severe leg wounds, be treated first. Despite his own injuries—including a nearly destroyed ankle—Lhandon attempts to downplay his condition, demonstrating his characteristic stubbornness.
The medical staff, including Ensign Jania Nis and Nurse Miash, immediately begin treating the team. Miash administers Hyronalyn to counteract the radiation poisoning while Nis addresses the team’s physical wounds. The situation becomes tense as Lhandon continues to resist treatment, prompting Sh’shelor to threaten to physically place him on a biobed if he does not comply. Her no-nonsense approach, coupled with her significant injuries, underscores the seriousness of the team’s condition. As they receive treatment, the team discusses the strange and traumatic events they experienced on the mission. Sh’shelor recounts the hallucinations that affected them physically, while Toxin hints at lingering doubts about what they encountered, especially regarding potential threats that may have followed them back. The conversation shifts between the gravity of their injuries and lighter topics, such as rugby and upcoming activities, showcasing the team’s ability to find humor and camaraderie even in dire situations. Morro Caras, who sustained injuries from a phasing leg and radiation exposure, expresses gratitude towards Lhandon for his selflessness during the mission, deepening their bond. Lhandon, though still stubborn, is eventually convinced to accept treatment, especially after Nis diagnoses him with an avulsion fracture in his ankle—a condition that could have long-term consequences if untreated. Nis’s pragmatic approach and Miash’s gentle but firm insistence on the necessity of rest help to calm the team. They joke about the similarities between their current situation and an Earth sleepover, but the reality of their condition remains serious. They are ordered to rest and recuperate, with a clear understanding that the effects of radiation poisoning will require ongoing treatment. As the lights dim in sickbay, the team settles into a quieter, reflective state, knowing they’ve survived one ordeal but must prepare for whatever comes next. |
A Final Farewell
Lieutenant Toxin Arlill reflects on the team's narrow escape. |
Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, Chief of Operations, records a log entry reflecting on the harrowing recent mission. He describes how his away team narrowly escaped the clutches of energy-draining nodes and other deadly threats aboard the USS Unity Dow. However, despite their success, the team was exposed to dangerous levels of radiation and is currently heading to Starbase 14 for urgent medical assistance, traveling at reduced power and warp 6. As Toxin makes this log entry, he is interrupted by a disturbing sight: one of the energy-hungry nodes, presumed to be a hallucination, reappears, moving slowly along the floor of Engineering, and then phases through the hull into space. Toz's Personal Log and Reflections
Dr. Toz reflects on the aftermath of recent medical challenges, her staff, and unresolved matters in her personal log. |
Dr. Toz records a personal log, noting that the medical team has nearly cleared all patients. She mentions the harmonious teamwork between Head Nurse Miash and Nurse Assistant Wing, and how Dr. Jania Nis has impressed with her treatment of radiation patients. Despite her competence, Nurse Bing has requested a transfer off the ship, likely due to the hallucinations she experienced.
Toz is also unsure what to do with Barney Nilsen, a patient in sickbay who doesn't seem to belong to the USS Butler or its current mission crew. She contemplates his situation before continuing her log, where she states that another group of nurses and a doctor is tending to the newly un-phased individuals in Shuttle Bay 2. With shore leave approaching, she aims to clear sickbay by 1800 hours and start restocking medical supplies. Drained from the recent events, she concludes her log. |
Transporter Diagnostics and Discussions
Lieutenant Herrick and Ensign Lahl work together to address various transporter issues, bonding over their Starfleet experiences. |
Lieutenant Josh Herrick and Ensign Kimonzi Lahl meet in Transporter Room 4 to work on fixing software patches across the transporters, installed as part of the post-Frontier Day updates. Herrick, reflecting on his father's near-assimilation during the Frontier Day events, initiates casual conversation to ease the workday. He jokes with Lahl about an earlier incident where she shot Lieutenant Kessler, though Lahl remains uncomfortable about it. The conversation shifts to their reasons for joining Starfleet, with Lahl expressing her love for engineering "toys" and Herrick mentioning his family’s deep roots in Starfleet's Corps of Engineers.
While testing the transporter using a banana, Herrick introduces Lahl to JOPA (Junior Officer Protection Association), a secretive yet unofficial group for lower-ranked officers to support one another. The transport test is successful, confirming that no unwanted Borg programming or other anomalies are present, much to Herrick's relief. This patch should remedy the root cause of the recent transporter mishaps. |
Marine Training Assessment
Lieutenant Maxwell leads a grueling training session for the Marines, culminating in a pre-training assessment for the SARS team. |
On Deck 9 of the USS Octavia E. Butler, 1st Lieutenant Arturo Maxwell leads a demanding training session for a group of Marines. Despite the punishing pace, with Maxwell running ahead of the group carrying a twenty-kilogram pack, the majority struggle to keep up. One Marine collapses mid-run, causing a brief pile-up, but Maxwell orders the others to continue without aiding their fallen comrades.
The group transitions to navigating the ship's Jeffries tubes, crawling through multiple decks, before emerging at a brisk pace down the corridors. Another Marine gives up, exhausted, while the others continue to follow Maxwell to their destination: the phaser range. Once there, Maxwell demands that each Marine achieves a score of at least thirty-eight during target practice. After firing, Maxwell reviews the Marines’ scores, commending Corporal Ruye, a medic, for achieving a perfect score of forty. Maxwell dismisses those who scored below thirty-six, congratulating the rest on passing their pre-training assessment for the SARS (Search and Rescue Service) team. |
Toz Recommends Nurse Aid Wing for Advanced Training
Dr. Toz recommends Nurse Aid Wing for advanced nurse training at the Starfleet Medical Academy on Earth. |
Dr. Toz reflects on Nurse Aid Wing's excellent performance and decides to recommend her for advanced nurse training at the Starfleet Medical Academy in San Francisco. She summons Nurse Wing to her office, where the nervous nurse assumes she’s in trouble. However, Dr. Toz commends her for her hard work and informs her that she will be leaving the Butler once they reach Starbase 14 to travel to Earth for the training. Wing is surprised and deeply grateful for the opportunity but struggles to express her gratitude before being dismissed. Excited, Wing heads back to her quarters to share the good news with her family. Meanwhile, Dr. Toz reviews the medical chart of Barney Nilsen, noting that although his condition is improving, he still experiences occasional semi-comatose states. Toz contemplates contacting Llandon Nilsen to see if he has any insight into Barney’s condition. Sim References: https://groups.google.com/g/sb118-butler/c/x9WBlgJQsHs |
Lhandon Nilsen’s Reflections and Operations Report
Lhandon Nilsen reflects on his personal relationships and professional duties aboard the USS Octavia E Butler, logging both his operations report and personal concerns. |
Lhandon Nilsen, sitting in his quarters after his shift, reflects on his surroundings, including family photos and a personal holographic winter display. He acknowledges feelings of disconnection with his friend and colleague, Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, and his thoughts are weighed down by the growing distance between them since joining the USS Octavia E Butler. Nilsen’s professional duties remain a priority, and he dictates an operations log detailing the recovery and support of the USS Unity Dow. He praises the bravery of Lt. Sh’shelor and Ensign Caras during the mission, while humorously noting the odd smell of bananas in transporter room one. His report highlights the Unity Dow's operational status, crew morale, and personnel changes.
Nilsen later switches to his personal log, expressing his frustrations and confusion regarding his strained relationship with Arlill, speculating whether the changes in Arlill’s behavior stem from his responsibilities or stress. Despite his love for Eli and his strong friendships, the unresolved tension with Arlill weighs heavily on Nilsen, prompting him to forward the personal log to Councilor Salo for advice. |
Family Ties and Forgotten Histories
Toz and Nilsen discover a possible family connection between Nilsen and a patient named Barney Nilsen while uncovering details of Barney’s past and the traumatic events on the Unity Dow. |
Dr. Toz contacts Lieutenant JG Lhandon Nilsen to assist with a peculiar patient in Sickbay named Barney Nilsen, who shares the same last name as Lhandon. As they speak with Barney, Lhandon learns that Barney might be a long-lost cousin, sharing a common accent and heritage from Gault. Barney, still recovering from the traumatic phasing event that affected the Unity Dow, recalls fragmented memories, including the loss of his friend Wilma and being forced off Gault due to the actions of the Ferengi Agricultural Consortium (FAC).
Lhandon is overjoyed at the discovery of a family connection, but the situation is bittersweet as Barney grapples with his fragmented memories. They discuss the possibility of Barney staying aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, though Toz notes that this would require higher-level approvals. Lhandon expresses his desire to help Barney by researching his family's history, particularly regarding Wilma and his father's fate. The scene concludes with Barney slipping into sleep, and Toz tasks Lhandon with looking into Barney's past to fill in the gaps. |
A Dinner of Introductions: Old Friends and New Beginnings
Avander Promontory hosts a quiet dinner for the newly assigned ensigns, leading to personal stories and light-hearted exchanges about their backgrounds, Starfleet careers, and future aspirations. |
Lieutenant Commander Avander Promontory, Executive Officer of the USS Octavia E. Butler, organizes a small welcome dinner in the Senior Officers Mess for the newest ensigns: Kimonzi Lahl, Jania Nis, and Morro Caras. Promontory selects the quieter venue hoping to encourage a more intimate conversation, and prepares a spread of hors d’oeuvres from various cultures, offering the new officers a warm and informal introduction.
The dinner begins with the arrival of the ensigns, each settling in with curiosity. Jania Nis, visibly tired from her medical duties, is the first to arrive, still clutching her coffee cup. She exchanges greetings with Promontory, and soon, Kimonzi Lahl and Morro Caras join the gathering. As they sit down, Promontory suggests that the group make formal introductions over food. The conversation begins with Jania Nis, a Trill symbiont, who shares her unique history. She talks about her experiences as the ninth host of the Nis symbiont and recalls a friendly rivalry between one of her past hosts, Mibahm Nis, and Lahl’s previous host, Timorzin Lahl. This sparks playful banter between Nis and Lahl, hinting at their shared history, which relaxes the group and sets a friendly tone for the evening. Kimonzi Lahl then takes her turn, describing her journey to Starfleet. She shares that she had a late start at the Academy and took a sabbatical to undergo the Trill joining process, ultimately becoming the sixth host of the Lahl symbiont. Lahl expresses her long-term ambition to command her own ship one day and participate in Starfleet’s Corps of Engineers, a goal that garners admiration from the group. Morro Caras follows, revealing his Orion background and the personal reason behind his enlistment: Starfleet granted him and his sister asylum, saving their lives. His story of survival resonates with the group, providing insight into his quiet but determined nature. As the discussion turns to future aspirations, Nis admits her focus is on her work in medicine rather than seeking command positions, quipping that being a captain sounds too stressful. Caras, meanwhile, reveals his dream of becoming Chief Engineer on a space station, though he admits that as an Orion, there are some barriers to being trusted with certain positions. Lahl reinforces her desire for a leadership role, aiming to one day command her own ship and solve engineering challenges throughout the galaxy. Promontory listens attentively, offering encouragement and suggesting they follow up with individual career discussions in the future. The dinner conversation continues with lighter topics, including family backgrounds. Nis shares anecdotes about her playful brothers and how their teasing shaped her, while Lahl mentions she has one brother who is not joined. Caras, in turn, speaks of his sister, who he hasn't spoken to since the Academy, hinting at the complexities of their relationship. After the personal exchanges, the group settles into a more relaxed mood. Caras proposes a card game, and Promontory, a fan of games, eagerly agrees. The group opts for a few rounds of Texas Hold'em. Throughout the evening, Promontory gains valuable insights into his new officers, appreciating their diverse backgrounds and the camaraderie they bring to the team. The dinner ends on a high note, with the officers feeling more settled in their roles and Promontory looking forward to helping guide their careers. |
Hot & Cold
Lieutenant Arlill and Lieutenant Nilsen confront growing tensions over their professional relationship and personal friendship, resulting in a strained fallout. |
After their mission to recover the Unity Dow, the relationship between Lhandon Nilsen and Toxin Arlill has deteriorated. Although Lhandon has forgiven earlier moments of tension, their bond has significantly weakened, and their once-friendly rapport is now distant and professional. Both officers feel the strain in their working dynamic, particularly after Lhandon authorized external diplomats to access the Operations Center without notifying Toxin.
Toxin summons Lhandon to his office, where their conversation begins tense and quickly escalates. Catharsis Through Combat: Nilsen's Emotional Release
In the gym aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, Lhandon Nilsen works through his anger at his friend and superior, Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, with help from his crewmates. |
Lhandon Nilsen, Assistant Chief of Operations, struggles with frustration and anger over the apparent breakdown of his professional relationship with Lieutenant Toxin Arlill. In the gym, Nilsen takes out his emotions on a punching bag, joined by Marines Arturo Maxwell and Thomas O'Reilly, as well as Morro Caras and Medical Officer Jania Nis. As he vents his frustration, Nilsen reveals that Arlill has sidelined him to the Gamma shift without explanation, which Nilsen interprets as a personal and professional betrayal.
Maxwell, serving as a steadying influence, holds the bag for Nilsen while exchanging lighthearted barbs, helping Nilsen release his pent-up emotions. O'Reilly and Caras also offer support, encouraging him to open up about the situation. As Nilsen punches the bag, he repeatedly expresses his anger at being pushed aside and losing the camaraderie he had with Arlill. Caras suggests that Arlill's actions might be influenced by personal issues, including a possible relationship with a crew member named Henry, though Nilsen is unsure. As the discussion unfolds, Nis joins the group after descending from the gym's rock-climbing wall. She theorizes that Arlill’s behavior may stem from lingering effects of the OVIV entity they encountered during a previous mission. Together, the group decides that confronting Arlill might not be the best approach and agrees that medical staff should assess him for any lingering issues from their recent mission. Maxwell delivers a sharp but fatherly slap to Nilsen’s head, reminding him that physical aggression towards a fellow crew member is unacceptable. This gesture, along with the support from his friends, helps Nilsen calm down and reflect on the situation more rationally. They suggest arranging a casual meeting with Arlill to gauge his behavior, and the group agrees to join Nilsen for a meal at his quarters to continue their support. |

Rushing to his quarters with Dr. Nhoush, they find Arlill unconscious with iodine pills scattered around him, suggesting an overdose. However, Nis quickly identifies that Arlill is suffering from a severe reaction to radiation treatment, aggravated by his Bolian heritage, which makes him particularly susceptible to radiation. Despite the risks, Nis insists on administering a higher dose of hyronalin, stabilizing Arlill and transporting him to Sickbay.
As Arlill regains consciousness, he discusses the difficulties his mixed Bolian-Tellarite heritage poses for medical treatment. Nis advises him on the importance of hydration and cautions against alcohol consumption during recovery. Throughout the exchange, Arlill’s confusion and frustration become apparent, particularly when he questions how his condition was reported. Nis reassures him while conducting additional tests to ensure his stability. Meanwhile, Dr. Toz observes the interaction, noting Nis’s skill in handling the situation. She reflects on the importance of understanding her team and later reviews Nis’s personnel file to learn more about her background. Just as Nis prepares for some downtime, another emergency call interrupts her plans, pulling her back into duty. |
Trade Negotiations and Cultural Encounters on the I-Kiyo Dyson Ring
Lt. Toxin Arlill, along with T’Larn and Lt. Karen Stendhal, navigates complex cultural dynamics while attempting to establish a trade agreement on the I-Kiyo Dyson Ring. Unexpected encounters with local merchants, linguistic challenges, and strange customs make for a tense but ultimately fruitful mission. |
Lt. Toxin Arlill, tasked with establishing a new supply chain for the USS Octavia E. Butler, arrives on the I-Kiyo Dyson Ring accompanied by T’Larn, the ship's Linguistics Researcher, and Counselor Lt. Karen Stendhal. Their mission begins with some cultural tension as the team undergoes a thorough security search upon arrival at the Port City of I’shal. Despite the initial unease, the team prepares to meet a local merchant named Es’th’o St’Amin, who they hope will serve as a reliable contact for future trade agreements.
As they walk through the towering, shadowy streets of I’shal, the team discusses their objectives and speculates about the cultural nuances they are about to encounter. T’Larn expresses her curiosity about the linguistic challenges ahead, anticipating a significant research opportunity in studying the language of the I-Kiyo. Upon arriving at a local tavern, they finally meet St’Amin—a tall, older man who communicates primarily through gestures, adding to the linguistic barrier they face. The situation takes an unexpected turn when a second merchant, Rutto, a mollusk-like alien, arrives and interrupts the proceedings. This intrusion shifts the dynamic, and what was originally a simple trade negotiation spirals into a bidding war between St’Amin and Rutto. Tension mounts as both local merchants attempt to secure Starfleet's business, with each offering competing logistics services. T’Larn works diligently to decode the I-Kiyo language, noting the phonetic structure of their speech while trying to ensure the mission stays on track. Despite the communication challenges, T’Larn makes significant progress in understanding the local dialect, and her research helps bridge the gap between the two cultures. As negotiations continue, the group indulges in local customs by consuming an unfamiliar, potent beverage. The mood lightens momentarily as the team engages with St’Amin over drinks, but confusion sets in when a group of anthropomorphic rat-like creatures suddenly enters the tavern. These unexpected visitors begin unpacking various shiny trinkets, adding a surreal touch to the already unusual situation. Lt. Stendhal, already disoriented by the local alcohol, struggles to discern whether the scene is real or a product of her imagination. Despite the distractions, Toxin manages to steer the negotiations back to the primary goal of establishing trade routes for the Federation. St’Amin’s offer of logistics services appears promising, but Rutto’s continued interruptions make the discussions difficult to follow. Ultimately, the Starfleet team focuses on St’Amin, who appears more prepared to meet their logistical needs. Rutto, frustrated by the turn of events, exits the scene, leaving the team to solidify terms with St’Amin. Throughout the encounter, T’Larn’s keen observations and linguistic skills prove invaluable, allowing the team to establish a deeper understanding of the I-Kiyo culture. |
A Crisis Averted on the Ring
The engineering team from the USS Octavia E. Butler successfully assists in repairing a critical system on the I-Kiyo Dyson Ring, preventing a potential catastrophe. |
Upon arriving at the I-Kiyo Dyson Ring, Lieutenant Josh Herrick, Ensign Kimonzi Lahl, and Lieutenant Anton Richards are invited to explore the ring’s engineering marvels. However, their visit quickly turns serious when they learn that the ring's shield dome generator, a critical system maintaining the atmosphere within the ring, is on the brink of catastrophic failure. The I-Kiyoan engineers, led by Mi’ch’ael 65, have been struggling with the issue for decades but are initially resistant to the idea of outsiders intervening in their life’s work.
As the Starfleet officers engage with the I-Kiyoan engineers, they discover that much of the original documentation and maintenance instructions for the shield generator have been lost over the millennia. The local engineers have been relying on trial and error to keep the system running, but over the past 43 years, the situation has been steadily deteriorating. The team soon realizes that the root of the problem may be the Sn’alzi’to Rotational Cylinder, a key component that has become misshapen due to friction, which threatens to bring down the entire shield system. Ensign Lahl, with her engineering expertise, suggests running a diagnostic to check if the internal system monitoring the generator is accurate. This suggestion leads to some friction with the local engineers, who are frustrated by the implication that their diagnostics might be faulty. However, after some tense negotiations, Lahl and Mi’ch’ael 65 work together to run an enhanced diagnostic scan, which reveals that the situation is even more dire than previously thought. The team now has a more accurate but alarming countdown to the system's failure. As time ticks down, the team considers potential solutions, including the possibility of fabricating new components for the generator using Starfleet’s replicator technology. However, they realize that without a proper reference pattern, replicating the necessary parts would be nearly impossible. Lieutenant Herrick recalls a set of ancient, untranslated manuals stored in the ring's database and proposes running them through Starfleet’s universal translator, hoping to uncover useful information. Despite the I-Kiyoan engineers' skepticism, the tricorder manages to decode the manuals, revealing detailed schematics for the Sn’alzi’to Rotational Cylinder. This breakthrough provides the Starfleet officers with the necessary data to create a replacement part. Working quickly, the team uploads the schematics to the USS Octavia E. Butler, which fabricates the part and transports it directly to the team on the ring. With the new component in hand, the team faces the daunting task of shutting down the generator to replace the cylinder. The shutdown triggers emergency protocols, and the team is acutely aware that they have only a few hours before the ring's atmosphere begins venting into space. Under intense pressure, Mi’ch’ael 65 carefully removes the damaged cylinder and installs the new one, reactivating the generator just as the emergency power reserves start to dwindle. The moment of truth comes as the system powers back up, and to everyone’s relief, the generator stabilizes, and the shield dome returns to full functionality. The local engineers, initially hesitant and distrustful, express their gratitude to the Starfleet officers, acknowledging that their combined efforts have saved the lives of everyone on the ring. The successful repair not only averts a disaster but also fosters a newfound respect between the I-Kiyoans and the Starfleet officers. As the team departs the generator facility, they reflect on the importance of cooperation and the role of Starfleet in offering aid to those in need. Lieutenant Herrick, Ensign Lahl, and Lieutenant Richards return to the USS Octavia E. Butler, satisfied with their mission, and curious about the implications of their discovery regarding the ring's ancient technology. The repaired generator and the knowledge gained during their mission could have lasting impacts on the relationship between the Federation and the I-Kiyoans, potentially leading to deeper collaboration in the future. |

Nilsen finds himself at the center of a harrowing trial on Port Coray, accused of the brutal murder of a Wadi male named Shdarn. The trial is presided over by the fearsome Magistrate Lexiudex, who wields power with an iron fist. The makeshift courtroom is packed with spectators eager to witness the downfall of a Starfleet officer, as the crowd buzzes with anticipation. Nilsen is visibly distressed, his every move scrutinized by those present, and he clings to the hope that his crewmates will be able to save him from an unjust execution.
Ensign Kimonzi Lahl, with the memories of a once-renowned Trill attorney, is thrust into the role of Nilsen’s defense counsel, despite her inexperience. She is joined by Lieutenant Commander Avander Promontory, who represents the United Federation of Planets, and Ensign Morro Caras, a character witness who shares his insights on Nilsen’s character. The situation grows dire as Lexiudex, driven by her desire for power and influence, makes it clear that she has little patience for what she views as Starfleet’s interference in her court. Meanwhile, Special Agents Ty B Dieter and T’Reth, part of Starfleet’s Special Criminal Investigations (SCI) team, work tirelessly to uncover the truth. They arrive at the gruesome crime scene, where they find the remains of the victim and a crime scene that has been contaminated by numerous individuals. Medical Investigator Sahiana Ordana assists them, but the lack of clear evidence makes their task daunting. The SCI team faces numerous obstacles, including unreliable witnesses like the avian Sa phto and the clone Cambrimi 45, both of whom provide conflicting and suspicious testimonies. Forensic Analyst Astrolabe, a quirky and energetic member of the SCI team, eventually uncovers crucial evidence. Through advanced forensic techniques, she is able to clear up distorted video footage from the crime scene, revealing that the individual captured in the footage is not Nilsen. Further analysis of DNA evidence suggests that blood found at the scene was planted after the murder, pointing to a deliberate attempt to frame Nilsen. As the trial progresses, tension mounts. Lexiudex repeatedly interrupts the defense’s attempts to present evidence, her disdain for Starfleet palpable. Ensign Caras’s testimony, meant to highlight Nilsen’s character, is twisted by the magistrate to paint Nilsen as physically capable of the murder. The situation appears increasingly bleak, with Lexiudex seemingly determined to deliver a guilty verdict. In a dramatic turn of events, Lahl confronts Sa phto with evidence that links her to the crime scene at the time of the murder. Under intense pressure, Sa phto’s story unravels, and she inadvertently confesses to being involved in the plot to frame Nilsen, driven by a deep-seated hatred for Starfleet’s presence in the Gamma Quadrant. However, before further details can be extracted, Lexiudex summarily executes Sa phto in the courtroom, using an energy weapon designed more for spectacle than efficiency. With Sa phto’s death, Lexiudex grudgingly acknowledges Nilsen’s innocence and orders the court to release him. The ordeal leaves Nilsen shaken, realizing how close he came to a wrongful execution. As the Starfleet officers hastily depart Port Coray, they reflect on the harsh and corrupt nature of justice in this lawless region. Commander Promontory, deeply disturbed by the entire process, leads the crew back to the USS Octavia E Butler, vowing never to let such a travesty occur again. The SCI team, while satisfied with the outcome, recognizes the tenuous nature of justice and the difficult path they must continue to walk in their pursuit of truth. |

In his office, burdened by the emotional weight of his recent decisions, Toxin questions whether pushing Lhandon away was worth the cost.
Seeking some relief, Toxin heads to the holodeck for a conversation with Henri, where they seemingly resolve a decision. Later, Toxin arrives at the gym, only to be greeted by Henri once more, appearing to assist him during a workout. The encounter is interrupted by Ensign Elijah Kovacs, who awkwardly attempts to make conversation with Toxin, sensing something off. As Toxin dodges Kovacs' curiosity, Henri’s presence looms, creating tension between the trio. Throughout the interaction, Toxin tries to deflect Kovacs' questions about Henri’s identity, while Henri himself toys with the situation, further complicating the dynamic. Ultimately, Toxin excuses himself from the gym, still grappling with his internal conflict over Henri’s role in his life and how much of it he should reveal to others. |
Wings' Returns
Toz manages the arrival of supplies and new nurses while adjusting to her role as Acting Chief Medical Officer. |
In Sickbay aboard the USS Octavia E Butler, Dr. Toz oversees the arrival of medical supplies, feeling overwhelmed by the disorganization. She balances multiple PADDs as she reviews inventory and requisition orders, noting that her request for five nurses had been partially fulfilled with four new arrivals. The new nurses enter Sickbay, giggling but quickly getting to work sorting equipment under the guidance of Head Nurse Miash, a Ferengi.
As the nurses ask Toz questions about where to store various equipment, she becomes slightly exasperated but trusts the team to handle the tasks. Taking a moment to sit at her desk, Toz reflects on her role as Acting Chief Medical Officer and the responsibilities that come with it, questioning her eagerness but reaffirming her competence in the position. Her thoughts are interrupted by Nurse Assistant Martha Wing, who has decided to return to her former role and train under Toz rather than completing her nurse training. Wing’s return is approved by the XO, Lieutenant Commander Promontory, and Toz welcomes her back, planning to involve Nurse Miash in her training. |
Reflections and Tea: Toz's Log
Dr. Toz reflects on recent events aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler and records a personal log about her plans and observations. |
Dr. Toz records a personal log in her office, reflecting on the challenges and peculiarities of the last few weeks aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler. She notes the surreal occurrences, including hallucinations and a bizarre incident where Counselor Karen Stendhal was split into two distinct versions of herself due to a phase development, which was ultimately resolved through further phase manipulation.
She shares plans for a brief leave to Deep Space 14, looking forward to visiting its arboretum for some much-needed relaxation. Toz also mentions staffing concerns in the medical department, requesting additional nurses to improve the team's capacity. She contemplates Nurse Aid Wing's potential promotion to full nurse and speculates on Head Nurse Miash’s ambitions of becoming a doctor, wondering if these topics might come up in casual conversation. After a brief pause for tea—iced, at her body's suggestion—Toz resumes her log, providing an update on Barney Nilsen's release from medical care. She notes that with the support of Captain Rouiancet and the XO, Barney was able to reconnect with his cousin before returning to the Unity Dow. With this final update, she concludes her log. |
Arboretum Excursion and Greek Food Adventure
Ensign Jania Nis, Lieutenant Commander Katsim Peri, and Lieutenant JG Toz explore Deep Space 14's arboretum before deciding to enjoy some Greek food together. |
Ensign Jania Nis eagerly heads to Deep Space 14 for her first real shore leave, accompanied by Lieutenant Commander Katsim Peri. They initially plan to visit the station's arboretum, where Nis expresses enthusiasm for seeing Petel Stones, plants native to an asteroid belt near Platz Delta. Upon arrival, they meet a Vulcan guide who warns them of the potential dangers in the arboretum due to some of the aggressive flora. Peri's dragonet, Echo, playfully zips among the trees, while the group ponders the guide’s warning.
As they explore, Dr. Toz joins them, and they consider the guide’s caution about plants like the Warrior Chechem, which can "spit" harmful substances. The guide’s attitude and a visible injury lead the group to reconsider their options. After a brief discussion, they decide to leave the arboretum and opt for a meal at a Greek-inspired café instead. At the Greek Island Bistro, the trio enjoy a meal as they witness the stunning spectacle of Petel Stones floating around the station, glowing and refracting sunlight into a dazzling display. They share a moment of awe, appreciating the beauty of the stones without needing the arboretum's guided tour. |
Career Aspirations in Operations
Lieutenant Commander Promontory and Lieutenant Arlill discuss departmental concerns and personal career aspirations during a candid one-on-one meeting. |
Lieutenant Commander Avander Promontory visits Lieutenant Toxin Arlill in the Chief of Operations office for a scheduled one-on-one meeting to check in on departmental issues and the Chief’s well-being. The discussion begins with Arlill addressing an issue with Ensign Lhandon Nilsen, whose overzealousness and challenges to command structure led Arlill to reassign him to a different shift. Promontory probes gently, ensuring there are no major operational concerns, and assures Arlill that support is available for addressing these matters.
The conversation shifts to Arlill himself, who admits to feeling some stress from recent ship changes and missions. Eventually, the discussion deepens as Arlill opens up about career aspirations, revealing a desire to eventually move beyond Operations Chief and pursue command opportunities. Promontory, drawing on his own experiences, encourages Arlill to consider the Command Training Program and potential stints at Starfleet Academy as paths to further his career. Throughout the dialogue, Promontory emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the development of one’s team as a key trait of leadership. Arlill acknowledges this advice but shares feelings of stagnation, seeking ways to grow professionally while remaining mindful of his current responsibilities. The meeting ends on a positive note, with Arlill considering the advice and Promontory offering to support him further when he’s ready to take the next step. |
An Awkward Encounter and Unplanned Diplomacy
Lhandon Nilsen attends a conference on Deep Space 14, where he has an awkward encounter with Captain Niccolò del Vedova and attempts to mediate a trade dispute. |
Nilsen, feeling somewhat out of place at a conference on Deep Space 14, finds himself in an awkward situation after accidentally bumping into Captain Niccolò del Vedova, the commanding officer of the USS Hirschfeld. During their conversation, Del Vedova is intrigued by Nilsen's experience with the United Dominion and his role in recent operations aboard the USS Octavia E Butler. The discussion, though initially awkward, reveals Nilsen's eagerness to learn and his desire to explore his future in Starfleet, earning Del Vedova’s interest despite the rocky start.
After the talk, Nilsen stumbles upon a heated argument between two traders, a Karemma named Jolek and a Dosi named Morka, over a misunderstanding regarding a shipment of Tulaberry Wine. Despite his lack of formal diplomatic training, Nilsen attempts to mediate the dispute, but his efforts are complicated by the traders' escalating tempers. Captain Del Vedova and Vothaw arrive just in time to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control, with Vothaw using his imposing presence to deescalate the conflict. Del Vedova, seeing Nilsen's genuine, albeit misplaced, attempt at diplomacy, invites him for a drink, hinting at a growing respect for the young officer's intentions and potential. |
Discovery
Henri, taking advantage of the night shift and shore leave, continues to explore the ship and further investigates his ability to control Toxin’s body. |
Henri, free from competition with Nilsen due to his reassignment to the night shift, spends his shore leave exploring the cultures of the crew via the holodeck. He avoids drawing attention by only using the holodeck during unoccupied hours. In addition to his holodeck activities, Henri also travels through the ship's public areas via the visual sensors, carefully avoiding more secure zones to prevent setting off alarms or invading privacy. Through these activities, he gradually becomes familiar with the crew, though he longs to interact with them directly.
Henri’s unique nature means he doesn’t require sleep, but he occasionally feels fatigued after extensive travels through the ship's data systems. During one such moment, he checks on Toxin and notices that he is asleep. Recalling a previous incident where he gained some control over Toxin’s body while the officer was unconscious, Henri wonders if he could replicate this control now. He taps into Toxin’s computer-enhanced mind, blocking the signal from Toxin’s optical node to his consciousness. Henri successfully lifts Toxin’s hand and stares at it through Toxin's eyes, signaling his increasing influence over the officer’s body while he sleeps. |
Unexpected Corridor Connection
Lieutenant Maxwell and Ensign Nis meet unexpectedly in the corridor, sparking a conversation about home and life aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler. |
Lieutenant Arturo Maxwell, after a brief exchange with his daughter, Milly, finds himself walking through the corridors of the USS Octavia E. Butler. Inadvertently, he bumps into Ensign Jania Nis, a new medical officer aboard the ship, causing Nis’s sandwich to collide with her uniform. After ensuring neither is hurt, Maxwell introduces himself, and Nis responds, noting her role in medical.
The two engage in lighthearted conversation, with Nis revealing her destination to the holodeck to use a program replicating the Trill homeworld. Maxwell, noticing her spots and deducing some homesickness, shares that he is from Scotland and describes his upbringing. Nis, in turn, reminisces about her own suburban childhood by the edge of a forest, expressing her feelings about being offworld for the first time. Their conversation shifts to shipboard life, including a mention of Maxwell's wandering cat, Haggis, who had recently made an impression in sickbay. Maxwell assures Nis that life aboard the ship gets easier with time. The two part amicably, with Nis heading toward the holodeck and jokingly asking Maxwell to pass a message to his cat. |
A Diplomatic Pivot: Nilsen’s Crossroads
After an accidental mishap, Lieutenant JG Lhandon Nilsen connects with Captain Niccolò Del Vedova over drinks, exploring his burgeoning interest in diplomacy and reflecting on his career trajectory. |
Lieutenant JG Lhandon Nilsen’s time at a diplomatic conference on Deep Space 14 started with missteps, including accidentally knocking Captain Niccolò Del Vedova over and failing to mediate between feuding traders. Yet, the unexpected camaraderie between Nilsen and Del Vedova led them to the Celestial Temple Pub for an insightful conversation.
Amid the cozy ambiance of Bajoran decor, Nilsen recounted his experience in the Gamma Quadrant, including his involvement with the United Dominion of Planets (UDP) and their efforts to assist freed slaves from the King’s Path. He expressed pride in these accomplishments but acknowledged his diplomatic efforts often felt serendipitous rather than intentional. This prompted Nilsen to seek advice on how to engage in diplomacy deliberately. Del Vedova shared his own unorthodox career path—transitioning from medicine to diplomacy and command—while offering guidance. He highlighted that Nilsen’s ability to adapt to challenges was an asset, not a flaw. Encouraged, Nilsen expressed a strong desire to pivot towards diplomacy while remaining mindful of his roots in operations. The discussion also touched on mentorship, with Nilsen referencing his relationship with Ensign Qurgh'Loq Yinn, a dual-consciousness officer balancing two roles. Both agreed that Nilsen’s next steps would involve seeking practical experience on diplomatic assignments and discussing his goals with his commanding officer, Commander Lia Rouiancet. Del Vedova’s affirmations inspired Nilsen to embrace his adaptability and approach his career with intentionality. They concluded their meeting with a mutual agreement to reconnect in the future, setting the stage for Nilsen to explore his potential as a Starfleet diplomat. |

Their casual outing takes a turn when they notice two large Chey'd aliens rushing through the crowd, seemingly chasing a young woman. Deciding to investigate, the marines follow the suspicious individuals into a restricted "Staff Only" area.
Using a combination of stealth and improvisation, including a diversion where O'Reilly pretends to be intoxicated, the marines confront the Chey'd. A tense altercation ensues, with the marines successfully subduing the aliens. Despite their efforts to extract information, the Chey'd reveal little, cryptically indicating that they are too late to intervene in the girl's affairs. Jenson uses his Betazoid abilities to confirm their deceit before the marines secure the aliens and call station security. After delivering the suspects to security, the marines find themselves back at the promenade, frustrated by the lack of leads. As they contemplate their next move at a bar, the young woman they had been pursuing, Sandra, unexpectedly approaches them. Identifying herself as seeking the USS Octavia E Butler, she requests to meet the ship's Chief of Operations, Toxin Arlill. Her urgency and apprehension grow as a station announcement disrupts the conversation. Before departing abruptly, Sandra presses an isolinear chip into Jenson's hand, pleading for their assistance. Moments later, two suspicious security officers approach the marines, inquiring about Sandra. Jenson and O'Reilly feign ignorance while concealing the chip. Realizing the gravity of the situation, they resolve to deliver the chip to the Chief of Operations as quickly as possible. |

The evening unfolds with humorous exchanges, including Una's use of a holographic assistant to care for her begonias and Kovacs' joking disbelief at Yinn's choice of a tuna sandwich with tequila. The informal gathering strengthens the camaraderie among the crew, with Eli feeling a sense of belonging among this quirky group of "odd balls." |
Counseling the Counselor: Strange Echoes and Medical Mysteries
Counselor Stendhal undergoes a medical checkup with Dr. Jania Nis, recounting her experiences with alien devices, DNA instability, and personal challenges. |
Counselor Karen Stendhal visits Sickbay on the USS Octavia E. Butler for a medical checkup with Ensign Jania Nis. She explains her recent ordeal involving an alien device that split her into two versions of herself and describes how one of her duplicates, dubbed "Karen2," exhibited aggressive tendencies before being reintegrated. Stendhal also revisits a prior incident where an alien device extracted part of her DNA, leaving her with lingering concerns about her biological and psychological integrity.
Dr. Nis performs a series of standard tests and examines Stendhal's DNA, finding signs of past damage that seem to have self-corrected. Nis suggests that the most recent duplication might have involved a changeling, sparking unease in the counselor. Stendhal reveals she's been experiencing nightmares and unease about her experiences, joking about her symptoms but also expressing real concern over her well-being. The conversation shifts when Stendhal mentions using the Holographic Counselor Assistant (H.O.C.A.) for support, although she notes its intrusive nature. Nis advises speaking with a real person for emotional support and offers to help. Their session is abruptly interrupted by what appears to be a ship-wide disruption, throwing Nis to the ground and leaving her mildly injured. |
