Mission Start

Commander Rouiancet, Captain

Commanding officer's log, stardate 240105.08.

We are officially a full two weeks out from our first mission at Cheyd'lang, and the Octavia E. Butler has seen the last of our evacuated refugees to safe harbors. Among those are Seytoxal, a resort world where much of the crew has spent time; the Esh-o system, where temporal incursions were thankfully at a minimum; and Port Coray, the independent trading station.

Our final group of refugees will disembark with the Butler's crew at New Bajor, where we (and presumably they) will enjoy some leave time. Some of the crew have declared their intention to continue to work with the refugees, and I will be one of them, at least at the beginning of the leave period, before I give myself any time away from my duties.

Even those officers and crew who aren't assisting the refugees may choose to do more work than normal for a period of leave as they adjust to the Butler and modify it to their liking, especially with our first mission behind us and their first impressions of the ship's performance behind them.

They will also have the opportunity to visit the newly constructed Deep Space 14 in orbit of New Bajor. The station is, even beyond the Gamma Task Force, the first permanent Federation installation in the Gamma Quadrant, and I am curious to see how its history unfolds. As such, there is more of a Starfleet presence here than usual, and we're currently sharing New Bajor's orbit with the Vulcana Regar, the Phoebe, the Joseph M'Benga -- and the 'Oumuamua, recently returned to active service and with personnel and materiel from the Federation. Among these personnel are a new intelligence officer, Commander Walker, who I look forward to getting to know.

Although I see no immediate signs of misadventure, I'm sure some among the crew will find it regardless.

End log.

Tensions and Discoveries
Analysis of trends reveals some potentially disturbing developments in the Gamma Quadrant.
Marine Second Lieutenant Ithri Sh'shelor, working in the Marine Intelligence Office, has been analyzing various pieces of data over the past few months. She discovers a troubling pattern that hints at a significant threat, prompting her to contact Lieutenant Commander Avander Promontory for further analysis.

Walker, just arriving aboard the OEB, makes a beeline to meet Avander, and incidentally Ithri, who shares that there is evidence of coordinated efforts by hostile groups in the Gamma Quadrant. Shadowy organizations have been engaging in suspicious transactions and making strategic acquisitions that could pose a significant risk to the USS Octavia E. Butler and its mission.

Commander Margaret Walker, the Director of Intelligence, reveals she has also been investigating the increasing number of hostile encounters the ship has been facing. Her findings suggest that these incidents may not be isolated, but rather part of a larger scheme. After discussion, Commander Walker, agrees with their assessment and authorizes further monitoring and investigation. Promontory, who's transitions from his intelligence role, hands over the responsibility to Ithri and Walker while expressing his desire to stay informed.

To New Bajor, Quantum Entanglement, and Beyond!
Officers from the USS Octavia E. Butler visit New Bajor but an unexpected development leads to investigating an accident rather than sampling the culture.
Yinn, Nilsen, Lieutenant Fer'at, and Ensign Qurgh'Loq gather in Transporter Room 3, Deck 7, preparing for a trip to New Bajor. Yinn expresses a desire to experience authentic Bajoran cuisine rather than replicated food. Nilsen agrees, emphasizing the unique quality of food made by experienced cooks. Loq initially prefers to stay on the ship, but Yinn insists on his participation, humorously enforcing "doctor's orders."

Upon beaming down to New Faren's town center, the officers are greeted by an overwhelming array of food stalls and enticing aromas. Nilsen expresses his excitement for the festival, but soon notices that Yinn and Loq seem slightly dazed. He inquires about their well-being, sensing something off beyond the sensory overload from the food. As the group explores the marketplace, Yinn and Loq begin to act oddly, eventually revealing that they are experiencing a form of quantum entanglement, sharing thoughts and even physical coordination. Already on the surface, Lieutenant Brzezinski bumps into the group, and what she thought would be the greatest discovery of her career (so far).

Fer’at hypothesizes that the transporter was likely the culprit, and Lhandon confirms this based on tricorder scans showing a brief interruption. Rivka detects elevated beta waves and suggests they return to the ship to investigate further. Without more details, the team decides against using the transporters to beam back up, instead opting for a craft. The entangled pair suggest that perhaps the Antari telepathic leaves might be the root cause. The journey to the shuttle was not without problems, both navigating the large crowds as well as helping Yinn and Loq as they struggled to properly control their limbs. As they get in the shuttle, the team talks about taking a cautious approach to this issue, stating concerns around what side effects might come from untangling Yinn and Loq.

Back aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, the officers head to the science labs and invite Doctor Toz as they try to understand and reverse the entanglement. Yinn/Loq stresses the importance of caution, emphasizing the need to avoid fatal mistakes, and also ending this unintended experiment before understanding the implications of it. Fer'at, prioritizing their safety, proposes a careful and thorough investigation into the phenomenon. The team conducts further scans and finds that Yinn/Loqs tachyons are entangled with other tachyons somewhere else, and perhaps that their counterparts are still orbiting the moon of Alpha Brenkevi where the incorporeal aliens had entangled particles as their neural network.

Through additional experimentation, they finds no immediate solution. Fer'at and Brzezinski discuss the possibility of leaving the situation as it is to avoid causing harm. The group decides to proceed with caution and run extensive tests to gather more data. As they complete the tests, Toz suggest as brain wash which is turned down by the combined officer. Loq mentions practicing yoga for physical therapy and expresses a desire to continue his duties with the Diplomatic Corps. The officers agree to monitor him continuously and utilize new neocortical monitoring systems to collect vital brain data. They acknowledge the potential for groundbreaking scientific research regardless of whether the entanglement is temporary or permanent. Whether temporary or permanent, one things was clear, more scans would be in order for Loq and Yinn.

Toxin Arlill: Apparition, Integration, and the Snap
Lieutenant Toxin Arlill encounters mysterious changes and a holographic assistant named Henri.
Lieutenant Toxin Arlill regains consciousness in sickbay feeling detached and isolated. Reflecting on recent events, he realizes something is affecting him, but the medical team cannot determine what. Toxin's neural mapping is abnormal and, shortly after, an apparition named Henri appears. Henri reveals that tiny undetectable nanites, a result of Toxin’s mission on Alpha Brenkelvi II, have integrated into his brain, allowing Henri to exist. Henri can only be seen by Toxin and is now part of his cerebral cortex. Without disclosing Henri, Toxin is released from sickbay and struggles to adapt to having Henri as a constant presence. In a subsequent heated discussion with Henri, Toxin demands to know more about the limits and capabilities of their connection. Henri reassures Toxin that his primary function is to assist and not to control.

Lieutenant Richards arrives on the USS Octavia E. Butler, is introduced to various crew members, and learns about new equipment and protocols.
Before meeting with Lieutenant Richards, newly aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, Chief of Security, LCDR Aine Sherlock, has a comm call with an old academy acquaintance to discuss the recent behaviour and actions of Starfleet Security following the aftermath of the Romulan Free State. After finishing the comm call, Sherlock welcomes Richards aboard and initiates his orientation. The pair head to the Operations Center, discussing the quirks of the Ops personnel and the ship's new equipment, including site-to-site transporter arches, updated phasers and the need for crew training.

Richards shares his previous experience on the USS Thor and notes the efficiency and advanced features of the Butler, and the need for a final check-up in Sickbay. In the Operations Centre, Lieutenant JG Lhandon Nilsen and Chief of Operations, LT Toxin Arlill. Nilsen organizes room assignments and supply deliveries, displaying his efficient system for managing Ops tasks. As Richards and Sherlock leave, Nilsen, noticing Arlill's unusual behavior, expresses concern, but Arlill brushes it off, indicating he has work to do. The tension between Arlill and Nilsen continues as they discuss operational matters, with Arlill hinting at issues with the quartermaster's master file. Despite Nilsen's attempts to help, Arlill remains defensive and insistent on handling the situation himself. Henri's presence complicates Toxin’s efforts to maintain his duties and relationships and hen retreats to his office, determined to handle the situation independently despite the potential risks to his career.

Next Tour Stop: 8-Forward
After visiting the Operations Centre, a hungry Richards redirects the tour from Sickbay to 8-Forward. Sherlock and Richards discuss career goals, responsibilities, and future ambitions over drinks.
After visiting the Operations Centre, Lieutenant Commander Aine Sherlock and Lieutenant Anton Richards head to 8-Forward for some food and drinks, where they discuss the power and classified and Borg nature of the ship's components. Sherlock initially requests Romulan ale, which Koryan, the barkeep, humorously declines the public ask due to its illegality, offering whiskey instead. As they settle in, Koryan expresses pleasure in seeing them again, noting their previous encounter on the USS Thor.

Whilst getting their drinks, Koryan reflects briefly on his own past and future as Sherlock inquires about Richards' goals as he returns to service. Richards shares his ambitions, reflecting on his career path and future plans. Anton wasn't quite sure what direction path he wanted to take. He didn't really have dreams of being a captain, but he wanted to help out as much as he could. He shares that he goes with the flow, to which Sherlock appreciates and shares the same sentiment. They invite Koryan into the conversation, who seems to share the same approach as the other two.

The scene fades out with Sherlock deciding to have another drink, and the trio reflection on life choices big and small.

For Crates Sake!
Chief Ral Shaw addresses a problem with missing decouplers in the USS Artemis-A's cargo hold, leading to a detailed investigation.
Aboard the USS Artemis-A, Chief Petty Officer Ral Shaw approaches Ensign Chevalier with a concern about an inventory discrepancy in cargo hold 2. She reports that a crate supposed to contain plasma line decouplers, loaded on Betazed, was found empty, filled only with circuit boards. Despite being out of his division's current responsibilities, Chevalier helps investigate, revealing that the crate was likely mislabeled. He suggests performing a full inventory of the Betazed crates to ensure no further issues. Ral, although reluctant due to the significant effort required, agrees to proceed. They uncover that the inventory mismatch might have been intentional, hinting at deeper issues that will need further scrutiny.

After investigating, Shaw determines that the crate was meant to be aboard the Octavia E Butler. Shaw connects with Nilsen and informs him that an audit revealed a discrepancy in the shipment, specifically crate Delta Victor Three Five Seven Zulu Zulu, and that Security might contact his department for further details. The conversation is briefly interrupted by a visitor delivering urgent news to Shaw, hinting at a connected issue on Deep Space 9. Nilsen recommends involving his brother, Madison, who works for Bajoran Security on DS9, to help resolve the matter and Shaw agrees. The call ends with both officers agreeing to follow up on the situation. After the call, Nilsen ponders the situation and decides to manually check the shipment in the cargo bay to avoid triggering any unwanted alerts. He contemplates whether to inform Lieutenant Commander Sherlock, weighing the potential outcomes.

Shaw then contacts Officer Madison Nilsen on Deep Space Nine to report a smuggling incident. Shaw had found contraband in crates from DS9 intended for the Artemis, containing illegal items instead of the expected Starfleet supplies. When they meet, Shaw presents the contraband and explaining the smuggling details, implicating Starfleet’s supply chain, and hands the investigation over to Madison.

Meanwhile on the USS Octavia E Butler, Nilsen discovers a mysterious crate in the lower aft cargo bay on Deck 11 that cannot be opened or scanned. Despite Nilsen’s efforts to access the crate, including trying to force it open manually and scanning its contents, he is unsuccessful due to the crate being lined with Poly-Protrerium. Attempts to use his codes and brute force also prove ineffective. Contemplating various solutions, he considers asking for assistance; first talking with Shaw, which proves unsuccessful, and then Richards. Despite numerous attempts, Richards is also unable to make any headway on the crate.

Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, searching for his second in command Henri, encounters Nilsen and Richards in the cargo bay. Nilsen updates Arlill on the situation, mentioning the strange behavior of the crate and their failed attempts to open or scan it. Intrigued, Arlill suggests moving the crate to an independent lab to avoid any potential risks to the rest of the cargo. In the independent bay, the team continues their investigation. Richards' tricorder experiences technical issues, leading to a moment of levity as he admits to breaking it. Despite their efforts, the crate still resists all attempts to scan or open it. The team is puzzled by these components and their possible use. Richards expresses his suspicions about the crate's origins and the potential involvement of a smuggling operation. He keeps a close eye on Arlill, wary of any unusual behavior he's exhibiting.

They discuss the possibility of smuggling and decide to track the crate's movements. Richards suggests checking the surveillance footage from the shuttlebay, while Arlill recommends placing a decaying isotope in the crate to monitor its location without alerting any potential smugglers. Nilsen and Richards discuss their concerns about the cubic lock on the crate and how easily someone could access the cargo bay of two Federation starships and Deep Space Nine. They contemplate the effort required to smuggle basic supplies and agree that it seems excessive for the replicator parts found in the crate. Arlill, feeling uneasy, questions if someone within Starfleet might be involved.

Arlill retrieves the isotope from the Quartermaster’s office and inserts it into the crate. They then use Toxin Protocol 118 to return the crate to its original location, ensuring the area is clear of personnel. They plan to monitor the crate’s movements using the security cameras and the subspace beacon. As they wait for any developments, Toxin reflects on the turmoil in his mind caused by the presence of Henri and the mysterious crate. He questions if he has gone too far with his pranks on Nilsen, especially with the computer now adapting its interaction algorithms.

After setting up a security alert for any movement on the crate, Nilsen confronts Arlill privately. He shares his suspicion that Richards might believe Arlill is involved in the smuggling. Arlill denies any involvement and emphasizes the importance of focusing on the real culprit. Despite his reassurances, Toxin feels uneasy about keeping Nilsen in the dark, especially since he has discovered cryptic communications related to the crate. The team continues to monitor the crate, hoping to uncover the truth behind its contents and the reason for the smuggling operation. They remain vigilant, prepared to follow any leads that might arise from their surveillance efforts.

Their scheme centers on hacking the food replicators to alter the personal preferences of their targets, ensuring they receive undesirable or humorous food items instead of their usual choices. They aim to prank the new Director of Intelligence, hoping to remain undetected.

The duo brainstorm various ideas, initially considering using smelly foods like stinky cheese or a pungent Bolian fish called zherlac, but land on the the hilarity of serving raw potatoes. To execute their plan, they need access codes, which Yinn manages to obtain from Wauhk, a loud science officer whose dietary preferences were easily overheard. They also consider using a holo emitter to disguise themselves during the hack to avoid detection by security cameras, ultimately deciding to use a likeness of the Director of Intelligence, Walker, to further mislead any investigations.

With the codes in hand, they plot to use the holo emitter and a strategy to disguise their actions effectively. Zarah emphasizes the importance of covering their tracks to ensure their prank remains untraceable. They plan to alter the replicator settings so their victim receives the same unwanted item at every meal, adding to the prank's impact. With the plans set, they'll execute them when the time is right.

Frustrated, Nilsen contacts Lt Cmdr Promontory for assistance. Promontory reviews Nilsen's file and finds no immediate issues but suggests they meet to resolve the matter in person. The conversation takes a humorous turn as Promontory jokes about the classified nature of his office location.

During their meeting in the Senior Officers’ Mess, Promontory brings up Nilsen's grandmother, who was also in Starfleet and known for her work on the variable warp field geometry program. Nilsen shares fond memories of his grandmother, explaining her contributions and the legacy she left behind. Promontory listens attentively, acknowledging the historical significance of her work and the challenges she faced. They discuss the beauty of the Excelsior-class ships, with Nilsen expressing his admiration for their design.

The narrative shifts to a flashback, revealing Promontory's past mission aboard the USS St Albans. He worked with Cmdr Althea Nilsen on computer-assisted warp-bubble modifications, aiming to reduce subspace pollution through software and hardware changes. During this mission, Promontory detected a temporal anomaly that posed a potential threat to the Federation, adding urgency and complexity to their work. This mission highlights the interconnectedness of past and present challenges in Starfleet.

Back in the present, Nilsen and Promontory delve deeper into the technical issues. Nilsen's access problems persist despite their efforts, and Promontory decides to assist directly, reflecting on the possible 'ghost in the machine' that might be causing the issues. Their discussion touches on the idea that sometimes more than just genetic material is passed down through generations, hinting at the persistence of technical quirks and challenges.

The interaction concludes with a light-hearted exchange, with Nilsen joking about Promontory being his grandfather due to a time-travel incident. Promontory assures him that is not the case, maintaining a professional yet friendly demeanor. They agree to continue working on resolving the computer issues, demonstrating the importance of teamwork and communication in overcoming the bureaucratic and technical challenges aboard the USS Octavia E Butler.

What to Do with Kessler?
The USS Octavia E. Butler's crew navigates personnel changes as Lieutenant Jack Kessler returns to the ship, prompting discussions about his role and clearances.
As the USS Octavia E. Butler undergoes personnel changes, Lieutenant Jack Kessler's unexpected return after being presumed dead stirs various reactions among the crew. Commander Aine Sherlock and Commander Avander Promontory discuss Kessler's reintegration into the crew, particularly his return to the Tactical Department. Despite concerns about how Acting Chief of Tactical Michele Winters might react to Kessler's return, Sherlock and Promontory plan to handle the transition professionally.

Promontory outlines the steps Kessler must take to regain his security clearance, emphasizing the need for medical and psychological evaluations. The conversation also touches on the bureaucratic challenges from Starfleet Headquarters, which had previously rescinded Kessler's clearances.

Kessler enters the scene, catching Sherlock and Promontory during a meeting about personnel changes. Kessler expresses a desire to be useful and is willing to take on any role needed, although he initially assumes he will return to Tactical. Sherlock, aware of potential complications, probes his preferences and the possible impact on the department. Captain Michelle Winters arrives to discuss ships' business, and asks Jack to leave.

After he leaves, the conversation turns to Winter's feelings about Kessler's reinstatement, strongly protesting it and arguing that his time as a prisoner of the Zet has compromised him. Her intense exchange with the command team underscores her feelings, whether professional or personal, despite the formal reassurances from Sherlock and Promontory. Winters asserts that Kessler's drive to find his parents could compromise missions, highlighting a previous unsanctioned mission he led. Promontory and Sherlock reassure Winters that all protocols will be followed, including thorough evaluations. Despite this, Winters remains adamant about the potential risks, emphasizing her professional stance and commitment to the ship's safety. After a firm dismissal, Michelle leaves, leaving Aine and Avander reflecting on it's intensity as they decide to postpone the discussion until they have more information.

Captain Michele Winters' Frustration and Confession
Captain Michele Winters vents her frustrations about Jack Kessler's return to Second Lieutenant Ithri Sh'shelor.
Captain Michele Winters, enraged by Jack Kessler's unexpected return and his potential reinstatement, storms through the corridors of the USS Octavia E. Butler. Seeking solace, she enters a usually empty office on Deck 12's Gator Deck, only to find Second Lieutenant Ithri Sh'shelor inside. Apologizing for the intrusion, Michele asks Ithri if she has a moment to talk, to which Ithri agrees.

Michele, needing to vent about her recent actions, removes formalities and begins to confess her mistakes, particularly her outburst in the XO's office with Promontory and Sherlock. She explains that her anger stems from Kessler's return and the command team's decision to reinstate him so soon, questioning their judgment and expressing her belief that Jack's emotional compartmentalization makes him unfit for duty.

Ithri listens and responds candidly, agreeing that Michele's concerns are valid but labeling her reaction as "stupid." This blunt honesty helps Michele realize she acted impulsively and needs to address the situation more constructively.

Interrogation and Insights
Commander Margaret Walker interrogates Lieutenant Jack Kessler about his time as a prisoner of the Zet, probing for information about their operations and intentions.
Commander Margaret Walker, the new Director of Intelligence aboard the USS Octavia E. Butler, conducts a thorough interrogation of Lieutenant Jack Kessler, who had been a prisoner of the Zet. Walker begins by questioning Kessler about his treatment and experiences during captivity. Kessler explains that the Zet treated prisoners well to extract information, emphasizing that he did not divulge any valuable Starfleet secrets. He recounts how the Zet offered him incentives, but he resisted and devised his own strategies against them.

Walker probes further, asking about specific details, including the Zet's intentions and any mention of Yansamin Anchorage, a neutral station. Kessler responds with information about his escape and the role of his holographic asset, K9, still gathering intelligence at a Zet facility. Walker expresses interest in retrieving this data but remains cautious about Kessler's involvement due to the risks involved.

Walker also questions Kessler about his escape partner, a Rekarian named Radek, and plans to investigate further. She instructs Kessler to document any additional details about his imprisonment that could be useful. As the session concludes, Walker starts planning her next steps, including securing Radek's cooperation and accessing his personnel file.

Radek's Interrogation and Return to Quarters
Ensign Radek is interrogated by Commander Walker about his time as a prisoner of the Zet and his interactions with Lieutenant Kessler. He is eventually sent back to his quarters.
Ensign Radek, a junior Security officer from the USS Caboto, is feeling lost on the USS Octavia E. Butler. With his clearances not yet reinstated, he is unable to access the ship's systems or communicate freely. After undergoing medical and psychological evaluations, Radek meets with Commander Margaret Walker, the Director of Intelligence. Radek reports to the Security Department Conference Room, where Walker begins her interrogation.

Walker questions Radek about the nature of the tests conducted on prisoners by the Zet. Radek explains that the tests were detailed scans, mainly neurological for him, and he did not witness any deliberate harm to the prisoners. Walker remains suspicious, pressing Radek for more information about the Zet's motivations and their study of prisoners. Radek suggests that the Zet were trying to assess the prisoners' value for potential buyers, but he admits he is not sure.

Despite Radek's honest answers, Walker continues to question him rigorously, which makes Radek uncomfortable. Walker emphasizes the importance of being thorough and expresses skepticism about Radek's quick reinstatement after being a prisoner for over a year. Radek apologizes for any perceived disrespect and attempts to defend his honesty, but Walker remains unconvinced.

Ultimately, Walker decides the interrogation is over and orders Lieutenant Dynevor to escort Radek back to his quarters. Radek leaves, uncertain about his future and feeling that Starfleet Intelligence still has many questions about him.

A Brush with Telepathy and a Taste of Orzata
Josh Herrick and Karen Stendhal engage in a conversation about telepathy, the crew’s morale, and drinks in the Writer's Room.
Lieutenant JG Josh Herrick and Lieutenant JG Karen Stendhal find themselves in the Writer’s Room on Deck 8 of the USS Octavia E. Butler. They engage in a candid conversation, with Herrick sharing his reflections on recent missions and Stendhal mentioning her telepathic abilities. Herrick, cautious about telepathy, tries to maintain control over his thoughts, while Stendhal reassures him of her intentions. They discuss the various zones within the Writer’s Room, including spots frequented by introverts and senior officers.

As their conversation continues, Herrick remarks on the commodore's successful transition and acknowledges Stendhal's role in maintaining crew morale. A waiter arrives, and both order drinks, with Stendhal choosing Orzata, a nostalgic non-alcoholic beverage from her childhood. Herrick decides to try it as well. The drinks prompt a discussion about past experiences and the nature of life in Starfleet, with Herrick reflecting on the phrase "Ad Astra Per Aspera."

The exchange delves into personal reflections, and Herrick finds himself occasionally struggling with the awkwardness of having his thoughts read. He tries to keep his mind clear of negative thoughts, with Stendhal humorously acknowledging the challenge. As Herrick attempts to steer the conversation back to safer topics, a flash of Caden Voss in the turbolift crosses his mind, highlighting his ongoing efforts to manage his inner world amidst the complexities of telepathic interactions. As she prods further on who Caden was, Josh mentions that the man had saved his life. With the uncomfortable tension around not being able to control the thoughts being read, he politely excuses himself to return to duty. This doesn't seem to be an uncommon occurrence for the counselor as she reflects on the vacant seat across from her and her empty glass.

GATOR Deck Operations: Jacen Xaivis and Michele Winters
Jacen Xaivis delivers a gift to Captain Michele Winters and they discuss its potential use for marine operations.
Second Lieutenant Jacen Xaivis attempts to make himself useful by delivering a gift to the Marine contingent on the GATOR Deck of the USS Octavia E. Butler. Pushing an anti-grav lift with several boxes, Xaivis, accompanied by an operations petty officer, arrives at the main area. The sentries scrutinize them, but their ID checks out. Captain Michele Winters approaches, and Xaivis introduces himself, preferring to be useful only when necessary, hinting at the dangerous nature of his role as a Combat Rescue Officer.

Winters inquires about the contents of the crates, and Xaivis explains they are ASPs (Aerial Support Platforms) designed for search and rescue operations with a sensor package more powerful than a heavy tricorder. Winters questions their functionality if other technology is disabled, and Xaivis assures her of the ASP's insulated power cell and controlled landing capabilities.

Winters decides to test the equipment on the training range. Xaivis sets up the ASP, and Winters arrives with a training drone to evaluate its performance. Xaivis demonstrates the ASP's capabilities, emphasizing its use in situations where transporters and other technology might fail. Despite its current limitations in range and power, the ASP shows promise as a valuable tool for command-and-control and reconnaissance missions.

Winters is impressed and instructs Xaivis to have a proposal on her desk by 08:00 the next morning, indicating her approval of the initiative and the potential of the new equipment.

Confronting Mistakes and New Roles
LCDR Sherlock assigns Captain Winters to engineering as a consequence of her previous actions, leading to a tense but ultimately constructive conversation about leadership and second chances.
((Gator Deck, Training Range, Deck 12, USS Octavia E. Butler))

Lieutenant Commander Aine Sherlock approaches Captain Michele Winters on the Gator Deck, a predominantly Marine area, to address the aftermath of a heated incident involving Michele and Jack. Despite the tense atmosphere, Aine commends Michele for her past leadership but stresses the necessity of some form of punishment for her recent actions. Michele initially resists the idea of a punishment, expressing her disbelief and irritation at being assigned to Engineering.

Aine reframes that the assignment is not a punishment but a second chance for Michele to demonstrate her leadership and teach the engineers to avoid injuries. Despite her initial resistance, Michele acknowledges her mistake and agrees to take on the role, albeit reluctantly. Aine reassures her that she has her support and trust, hoping that Michele will use this opportunity to grow and lead effectively.

Michele, although still frustrated, agrees to the reassignment and promises to try and control her temper in the future. The conversation ends on a lighter note with both agreeing to relieve some stress by practicing with phaser rifles.

JOPA: 404 Gathering
Lhandon Nilsen hosts a gathering in his quarters, with an unexpected EV walk.
In Lhandon Nilsen's quarters, humorously named "404 room," he prepares a beef stifado following his grandmother's recipe. Maxwell arrives first, serving as the chief taste tester. The two discuss the need for a new bingo list suitable for their current ship, the USS Octavia E. Butler, with tighter security measures. They recall past pranks and set plans for the evening. Yinn arrives next, bringing a variety of drinks, including brandy, blood wine, kanar, and ferlic acid. Nilsen appreciates Yinn's efforts and her honest communication style. Eli Kovacs joins, contributing a bottle of Raktale, and the group discusses the challenges and changes since their recent mission, including the impact on their living arrangements.

Josh Herrick enters with non-alcoholic root beer, easing into the gathering despite mixed feelings towards some attendees. The conversation shifts to relaxation and the importance of balancing work and leisure. The group teases each other and shares light-hearted banter about pranks and personal experiences. As the evening progresses, Zarah Johnson arrives with brownies and raspberry cordial, lightening the mood. They joke about the various drinks and their effects, and Maxwell humorously contemplates the chaos that might ensue. The officers continue to bond, supporting each other through recent challenges and enjoying a much-needed reprieve from their duties.

As the evening continues, the team discusses the tradition of engraving names into the ship's hull and, with them posted to a new ship, that they'd need to redo this aboard the Octavia E Butler. They arrange to head down onto Deck 5 under the guise of completing routine inspections after their last mission. Toxin decides to join the group, despite the rift that has formed between him and Lhandon, and heads out to the EV lockers. There, Herrick, Johnson, Yinn, Kovacs, and Maxwell prepare for the spacewalk. Nilsen coordinates from the Operations Center, ensuring all equipment is ready.

The group suits up and steps out onto the hull of the USS Octavia E Butler, marveling at the view of New Bajor and DS14. The team members take turns etching their names and messages onto the ship’s hull, a JOPA tradition. During this, Zarah Johnson accidentally disengages her magnetic boots, causing her to float away from the ship. Panic ensues, but Nilsen guides her to use the recall button on her suit, allowing her to return safely. Maxwell and Arlill assist in securing her.

The JOPA crew reconvenes at Lhandon Nilsen’s quarters following a daring exercise of carving their names into the hull. The crew reflects on their harrowing experience, sharing a mix of relief and camaraderie. Zarah Johnson reassures everyone that she is fine, and the group exchanges light-hearted banter.

Lieutenant Josh Herrick and LT JG Lhandon Nilsen present a special surprise for Arlill: an unofficially official Operations tricorder, crafted as a thoughtful farewell gift. Arlill, rendered speechless by the gesture, gratefully accepts the tricorder, admiring its custom features. The group continues to bond, making jokes and toasting to Arlill’s future success. Nilsen takes a group photo to commemorate the event, capturing a moment of unity and friendship among the crew. The meeting concludes with toasts and hopes for Arlill’s bright future.

Engineering Mysteries on Deck 15
An unusual discrepancy is investigated in the USS Octavia E. Butler's systems, uncovering potential connections to previous incidents.
Lieutenant JG Josh Herrick, the Acting Chief Engineer of the USS Octavia E. Butler, is puzzled by a recent incident that landed him in Sickbay after investigating an anomaly in the waste systems on Deck 15. With lingering questions about the computer's behavior and missing medical records, he begins to suspect a deeper issue.

Herrick and Paradi decide to investigate the junction where the anomaly was first detected. As they crawl through the Jefferies tubes, Paradi contacts Ensign Lhandon Nilsen in Operations to monitor their movements and systems. Nilsen, from his post in the Operations Centre, acknowledges the request and starts tracking their progress.

Upon reaching the junction, Herrick detects a minor but suspicious variance in the system, which Paradi also confirms. Despite its negligible size, the discrepancy concerns Herrick due to his recent experiences. Nilsen, connected to Herrick's tricorder, tries to find relevant logs but discovers that crucial incident records, including Herrick's transport to Sickbay, are missing or incomplete. This raises suspicions of the computer attempting to "gaslight" them by erasing evidence.

As they discuss the anomaly, the team speculates about potential issues with the memory core or transporter logs. Herrick recalls intelligence protocols that obscure transport records, adding another layer of complexity to their investigation. Despite the frustrating obfuscation, they consider the possibility that the transporter system might be involved in the anomalies.

Nilsen and Paradi discuss suspending transporter use due to safety concerns, a decision supported by Herrick. They prepare to conduct a test involving biomatter cylinders transported through the problematic junction to gather more data. Despite their precautions, the transport results in chaos as the cylinders arrive in disarray in Tobat's office, further complicating their investigation. The team decides to take the transporters offline until such time that they can be fixed properly.

Awards Ceremony
Commander Lia Rouiancet leads a promotion ceremony, announcing key changes in the crew's positions. For a list of awards and promotions, see [OEB Crew Awards] and reference stardates beginning with 240106.
The promotion ceremony on the USS Octavia E. Butler, led by Commander Lia Rouiancet, was a significant event to establish her leadership. She began by reading a passage from Octavia E. Butler's "Parable of the Sower," emphasizing diversity and unity. Commander Etan Iljor was acknowledged for his service and announced as the new commanding officer of the 'Oumuamua'. Lieutenant Commander Avander Promontory was promoted to executive officer, and Lieutenant Commander Aine Sherlock was appointed as second officer while retaining her role as chief of security.

Commander Margaret Walker was introduced as the new director of intelligence, replacing Avander. Lieutenant Josh Herrick was promoted to permanent chief of engineering, recognizing his contributions to the ship's infrastructure and propulsion systems. Finally, Lieutenant Lhandon Nilsen was officially made the assistant chief of operations, highlighting his ongoing excellence and personal friendship with Commander Rouiancet. The speech concluded with Lia encouraging the crew to enjoy the refreshments and congratulating their shipmates as she prepared to present individual ribbons.

At the security table, while small talk is made, the tension between Kessler and Winters is still palpable to others. As the captain makes her rounds, she arrives at their table, having a brief discussion with Kessler and Winters which results in Kessler returning as Chief of Tactical. She also somberly awards Sherlock the Prisoner of War ribbon as a result of the last mission. After Rouiancet departs, TK warmly welcomes back Kessler and then is stolen to an outside corridor by Winters, who expresses her concerns around Kessler's return and muses that he's a Zet spy despite TK's reassurances. In their absence at the table, Sherlock fills Richards on some of Lhandon's more 'concerning' moments but positive outlook for the future.

At the operations table, Commander Rouiancet awards Nilsen the Prisoner of War ribbon, emphasizing its significance as a recognition of his endurance and tenacity. Nilsen expresses gratitude, although internally he and Toxin Arlill experience mixed emotions about the occasion. Toxin reflects on his past mission and feels a fleeting sense of guilt about his friend's ordeal. Commander Rouiancet also awards Toxin the Leadership Excellence Ribbon, praising his exceptional performance in leading the marine team to Cheyd'lang. Nilsen congratulates Toxin and recommends meeting the new HCO, but Arlill's responses are abrasive and he internally doubts Nilsen's motivations.

At the engineering table, newly arrived Ensign Morro Caras was introduced to the engineering team, prompting a discussion about their academy experiences. Shevon and Herrick reassured Caras they would try to go easy on him, though Caras insisted he could handle any challenges. Commander Rouiancet further encouraged Caras, stating that the only thing that ever let her down was the turbolift. The team laughed and continued their conversations, building camaraderie. Before departing the table, the captain awarded Herrick the Captains' Commendation. After her departure, Lieutenant Nilsen, recently promoted to Assistant Chief of Operations, surprised Eli with a quite affection greeting. Eli, feeling awkward at the attention, was reassured by Nilsen and led away to the dessert table.

At the medical and sciences table, Qurgh'Loq Yinn (the combination of Loq and Yinn from a transporter accident) is still working to properly operate both bodies with a unified mind. When Rouiancet visits, she awards Stendhal the Unity Ribbon for her contributions to supporting and championing morale and emotional health within the crew and the refugee population. Stendhal expresses her gratitude and pride in serving with the amazing crew of the USS Octavia. Rouiancet then turns to Dr. Toz, handing down two ribbons with assistance from Lohkina. Toz is recognized for her resilience during her imprisonment by the King's Path with the Prisoner of War ribbon. The second ribbon, the newly adopted Excellent in Adaptability Ribbon, acknowledges Toz's versatile roles during the Cheyd'lang mission. Toz is surprised and grateful for the commendations, while Stendhal congratulates her with a smile and applause. Yinn receives the Captains' Ccommendation from Rouiancet, acknowledging his readiness and contributions to the mission, and she also remarks that she's pleased that Yinn will be able to continue on active duty despite the recent accident.

The ceremony ended with all participants of the previous mission being awarded the Maiden Voyage Ribbon, the First Contact Ribbon, the Diplomacy Ribbon, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. Afterward, at the head table, Rouiancet lets Avander know that as the incoming CO, part of her wanted to do the awards solo for her first round but that he'd be involved to a greater degree in subsequent ceremonies.

Gym Encounters
It's gym time for Arlill, Nilsen, Caras, and suprisingly Henri.
Lieutenant Toxin Arlill is working out in the ship's gymnasium, aided by Henri. Henri describes the feeling of the ship reaching out to him, and as a result of asking the ship's computer to project him, gains holographic form. When Toxin asks Henri to spot him while lifting weights, instead the AI controlled his endorphins to give him superstrength, at the cost of blurring his eyes and increasing his blood pressure. The Chief Ops Officer wants to investigate further.

Meanwhile, Ensign Morro Caras joins Lieutenant JG Lhandon Nilsen arrive at a separate side of the gym for a workout. Caras, who hasn't had much time to socialize, is eager to engage in physical activity and social interactions. Nilsen invites Caras to join the rugby team, to which Caras expresses interest despite not being familiar with the sport. During their workout, Caras performs a series of stretches while Nilsen engages in deep squats.

Lhandon notices Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, who is finishing his workout with a companion named Henri, and decides to introduce him to Morro. Henri, now with a corporeal form, introduces himself to Nilsen and Caras as an officer down in Waste Reclamation. The group discusses their workout routines, with Henri hinting at Toxin's impressive progress despite Arlill's modesty. The exchange ends on a positive note, with Lhandon suggesting the group get together for Rugby practice, which Morro has never heard of, and in turn the group would learn dance from the Orion engineer. Arlill protests, mentioning his two left feet and Henri's schedule, but Henri pushes forward to take the team up on their offer and the group arranges time in the future for the holodeck.

Farewell to Commander Etan Iljor
The crew of the USS Octavia E. Butler bid farewell to Commander Etan Iljor as he departs to assume command of the USS 'Oumuamua.
In a series of heartfelt goodbyes, the crew of the USS Octavia E. Butler gathered on Deck 4 to bid farewell to Commander Etan Iljor, who is leaving to assume command of the USS 'Oumuamua. Lia Rouiancet, the commanding officer, was among the first to arrive, carrying a case of Altair water, a gesture symbolizing Iljor’s first drink on the 'Oumuamua and marking his new role. She handed the case over and explained its significance, highlighting the personal touch she hoped would ease his transition.

Lieutenant Commander Aine Sherlock expressed her pride in Iljor, admitting she would miss him. Sherlock’s usual stoic demeanor cracked as she showed rare emotion, reflecting the deep bond and respect she had for Iljor. She reassured him that he would do great in his new command and struggled with the finality of the moment, opting for a “see you later” instead of goodbye.

First Lieutenant Arturo Maxwell, also known as Max, offered a photograph to Iljor, a memento to stick in his new quarters or ready room. The photograph symbolized their shared experiences and the bond they had formed. Max’s farewell was simple but filled with genuine sentiment, representing the mutual respect between the marine officer and the soon-to-be captain.

Josh Herrick, the acting chief engineering officer, presented Iljor with a custom shirt, a legacy of sorts. The gift symbolized Herrick’s gratitude and the significant influence Iljor had on him. The two shared a firm handshake that had a warm note of finality, with Herrick expressing confidence in Iljor’s future success and acknowledging the void his departure would create on the Butler.

As more officers arrived to say their goodbyes, the scene grew more emotional. Lia Rouiancet remarked on the indelible mark Iljor had left on the crew, noting that the inaugural crew of the Octavia E. Butler would always remember him. The collective farewells from the crew highlighted the strong bonds formed and the positive impact Iljor had on everyone.

Etan Iljor, visibly moved by the turnout, offered final words of encouragement and thanks. He acknowledged the bonds formed and the influence they had on each other, expressing his gratitude for their support and friendship. His words were a mixture of humility and confidence, reflecting his readiness to take on his new command while cherishing the memories made on the Butler.

The emotional farewells culminated with Iljor stepping onto the transporter pad, giving a final nod to the crew. The transporter chief activated the beam, and Iljor dematerialized, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, camaraderie, and respect. The crew watched as their first officer departed, feeling a mix of pride and sadness, knowing they had witnessed the beginning of a new chapter in his illustrious career.

Lieutenant Toxin Arlill, arriving a bit late, carried a stylish mug inscribed with "Type-J," a memento from one of their first missions together. Despite an unfortunate accident that shattered the mug, Toxin’s effort and the story behind the gift underscored the profound impact Iljor had on his crewmates. Toxin arrived just as Iljor was preparing to leave, catching a glimpse of him before he dematerialized.
