Personal History
Raised an only child, and named for his grandfather, Samuel West grew up in Toronto, Canada on Earth. His father, Preston, is a professor, working in the history department at the University of Toronto. Sara, his mother, is a civilian engineer and designer of starships. While she mostly works on designing civilian vessels, such as cargo ships and transports, she has participated in several Starfleet projects as well.
While outgoing, Sam was also an anxious child and often struggled to make friends. At the age of 13, he came out to his parents as gay, which, while his parents were supportive, was the source of further anxiety and self esteem issues. Through his teenage years, Sam took an active interest in his mother’s work, often accompanying her to work and developing an interest in starships and space travel, as well as all types of seafaring vessels.
At 16, he made the decision to apply for Starfleet Academy when he turned 18. While unexpected, this wasn’t all that surprising to his parents as they were keenly aware of his passion for starships, and interest in Starfleet life and operations.
While Sam performed well in school, he found that he struggled occasionally. He received decent grades in subjects that interested him or were taught by a teacher he enjoyed but seemed to put minimal effort into subjects he found less interesting, or even boring. When he applied to Starfleet Academy, he was almost rejected; the recommendation of one of his teachers, who could really see Sam’s potential, that swayed the opinion of the recruiter.
