Pitching For Business

((Deck 6, Diplomatic Facilities, USS Excalibur))

::When mentioning the need to contact Senator Vreeya, Brek had tried his famous 'you would do it better than me' move, adding a compliment to the mix. But this time, to his dismay, it didn't work.::

Nicholotti: As much as I would like to speak with the Senator, I'm afraid we have a lot that demands my attention. If you could convey my greetings when you speak to her.

Brek: oO Frinx. Of course, greetings I'll give... Oo

Brek: Very well Captain. ::He was about to let her continue her tour of the ship, when a last question popped into his mind, and before he could think, it was on his lips.:: What about SB118, do you miss it too, or are you one of those C.Os who truly prefer a life out there in space, forever on the move?

::The Captain smiled at him.::

Nicholotti: I have to say that there is an allure to space that I do enjoy. As nice as stationary life was, I think we will be able to make a bigger difference out here on the Excalibur.

Brek: That's what I'm telling myself too. We'll be able to respond to threats or difficulties far quicker than when we were on the Starbase. Who knows, maybe Starfleet thought it was time for us to show our worth in space.

Nicholotti: We should arrive in a matter of hours, so get some rest if you can.

Brek: ::With a grin.:: With all those new doors to open, I don't think I'll be able to rest. Thank you for passing by, Captain.

::Once alone, Brek reverted his attention to eating his snack, and lost in thoughts, he let his feet take him to his quarters. He had been there just a few minutes before the briefing, but had no real idea how they looked like. Except that they appeared to be large, and rather lonely without any personal token on their walls and shelves.::

((Moments later, Brek's Quarters))

::The first thing he noticed was Alice's box, and he shook it gently to check that after those few hours spent alone, she was still alive. The creature moved about frantically, and Brek knew that if he opened the box right now, the first thing she would do would be to set her fangs into one of his hands, causing an excruciating pain. So while she calmed down, he asked the replicator to make the perfect vivarium, with plenty of vegetation, wood bits and rocks.::

::Once he was happy with the result he grabbed Alice's box. He turned it upside down above the vivarium, and shook the box until the spider fell into her new environment.::

Brek: oO Voilà! Who knew that having a pet could be such fun? Oo

::The words 'pet Romulan' popped into his head. But he wasn't ready to call Vreeya yet. No, before he tackled this diplomatic task, he needed a warm-up exercise of some sort... That's how he decided to call his grandmother. After facing her ire, he would be able to endure anything.::

::When Ara's wrinkles materialized on his screen, Brek could tell that she wasn't a 'happy bunny' to use a Terran expression. She was glaring at him and her nostrils were flaring in a comical way. Yet, when she spoke, her voice was measured, cold even.::

Ara: =/\= Congratulation on your transfer, Cmdr Brek. I can only imagine how pleased you must be to be able to roam the galaxy and rescue your precious Romulans. =/\=

Brek: oO Of course she would say that. Be clever, don't take the bait. Oo =/\= I'm merely following orders, Ara. =/\=

Ara: =/\= Did Fleet Captain Nicholotti also ordered you not to contact your family? =/\=

Brek: oO So far, so predictable. Continue to keep it simple. Oo =/\= I genuinely forgot to send you a message, that's all. =/\=

Ara: =/\= I see... So I don't even deserve an elaborated excuse, just a lame one. You're getting sloppy Brek. =/\=

Brek: ::Getting a bit flustered.:: =/\= You wouldn't like it on the Excalibur. It doesn't have the business opportunities you can find on 118. =/\=

Ara: =/\= I never said I wanted to follow you, did I? What breaks my heart is that you left without saying goodbye. =/\=

::At this point, Brek was so worried that she would look at him with misty eyes that he said the very last words he wanted to pronounce.::

Brek: =/\= I'm sorry. =/\=

Ara: =/\= Well... at least you are not completely uncivilized. Be sure to remain safe at all time, Brek. You have no idea how devious those Romulans are. You know how to delegate tasks and how to dodge orders, don't you? =/\=

::Brek simply nodded his head.::

Ara: =/\= That's a good little beetle. Of course you'll keep in touch with me. Also, let me know if you need anything. =/\=

::Ferengis were renowned for exploiting their families, so it was normal to hear her pitching for business.::

Brek: =/\= That's... very considerate of you. =/\=

Ara: =/\= As much as I regret it, I guess I had better let you get on with your work then. Don't get me wrong Brek, I'm still mad at your behavior, but I also know that, like most males, you're too insensitive to grasp family values. Goodbye and may your journeys be profitable. =/\=

Brek: =/\= Goodbye.=/\= oO I guess. Oo

::She cut the communication, leaving him flummoxed. Overall, discussions with her were actually easier when they just shouted at each other...::
