OOC: Takes place after Lael & Jansen’s JP “I’m Sorry”

((Lael’s Temporary Quarters -- San Francisco, California, Earth))
{{Time Index: Right Before The Party}}

::Lael replicated a bottle of Cabernet. She wasn’t normally a wine drinker, but tonight seemed to call for something more mild. She didn’t want to get fall down drunk, after all.::

::CD was outside her room, in a nice button down green shirt and black slacks. He didn’t really know what he was going to wear to the party, but he did have his communicator in his pocket. The informal message from Lael was a bit confusing also, as nobody ever messaged him right before a party. As he blew a strand or two of hair from his face, he pressed the chime.::

::Lael jumped, barely able to contain her excitement.::

Rosek: Enter!

::He came into the room and glanced around. With a raised eyebrow, he asked casually.::

Skyfire: What’s up, Lael?

Rosek: ::pours a glass of wine and offers it to him before pouring herself one:: This couldn’t wait until the party...and we’re kind of keeping it quiet for now.

Skyfire: So why tell me whatever it is if it’s supposed to be a big secret? ::he took the glass of wine and had a sniff of it, just to figure out if it was dry or not.::

Rosek: ::grasps his free hand:: As odd a thing as this is to say to my superior officer, you’ve become one of my closest friends this last year. You’re the first of the crew that I thought of telling.

::CD blinked at that, and had a small sip of wine before he made a reply.::

Skyfire: Me? I didn’t do anything. My jokes were as stale as MREs, and it was Alex’s idea anyway to make me the morale officer. ::He paused before rambling on.:: First of the crew, huh? So what’s the...what’s the I’m not supposed to know this yet?

Rosek: ::smiles sheepishly:: Well, not technically no. But I don’t think Jansen would be too upset if I told you. We all know you’re pretty good at keeping secrets.

Skyfire: I wouldn’t be much of a doctor if I wasn’t. Come on then, lay it on me.

Rosek: ::exhales heavily and fights back a squeal of delight:: Jansen proposed!

Skyfire: Wow. Um...congrats? ::As socially awkward as he was, it seemed like the right thing to say at this point.::

Rosek: ::smirks:: You aren’t jealous, are you?

::He shook his head and had another small sip of wine. He wasn’t one to get hammered, and Alex seemed interested in him. It was going to be interesting.::

Skyfire: Not at all. Remember I said I was getting close to Alex?

Rosek: ::arches an eyebrow:: Why, Chythar. You dog. Did you get in his pants while I was gone?

Skyfire: Not that close just yet...but we had dinner together. It was like magic almost.

Rosek: ::grins:: And you were afraid you wouldn’t know what to do. I’m so proud of you. It took real gumption to tell him how you felt.

Skyfire: He called me after we hung up the comm line. Said two days was too long to see me, and asked if we could have dinner the following night.

Rosek: ::hugs him tightly:: Oh, congratulations! I know this is a big step for you.

::He didn’t know what to say, though. He hadn’t the faintest clue how to continue this conversation. With a shrug, he set the glass down on the coffee table.::

Skyfire: I don’t know what will happen, exactly. He wants it to last, I want it to last, so we’ll see where it goes.

Rosek: Oh, Chythar. Can’t you see how much you’ve changed? How much stronger and confident you are? Before, even this…::motions between them:: would have intimidated you.

::That was true. Stronger and more confident though? That might’ve been a joke. Then again, the work he’d done with Alexii, Nikolai and Andre had helped. The only thing that didn’t make sense overall was whether that meant he could apply the same confidence he’d learned about horses to people. Quite probably not.::

Skyfire: I suppose you have a point.

Rosek: ::smirks:: Has the universe ended? Did Chythar Skyfire just admit I was right about something?

::He looked at her, incredulous for a moment and slightly abashed.::

Skyfire: What? You are surprised I admit you have a point? Come on, you always said that it takes some gumption to admit when you’re wrong.

Rosek: ::laughs:: I’m just teasing. I guess that’s what we need to work on next…

Skyfire: What, my ability to read sarcasm? Never happen. I’m too serious.

::He reached into his pocket and pulled out a mint, popping it into his mouth before offering one to her.::

Rosek: ::takes it and nods gratefully:: Are you kidding? You’re the least serious person I know. ::pauses:: That came out totally wrong.

Skyfire: ::smirked.:: You need to work on tact, darlin. Just a bit.

Rosek: ::grimaces:: I haven’t exactly been Miss Social Etiquette myself lately. Something happened out there…

::The merest mention of ‘there’ brought back the horrors for a moment. He closed his eyes and exhaled slowly, purging the energies as he’d been taught. It was not a fond memory.::

Skyfire: So my sense of humor needs work, then.

Rosek: ::shakes her head:: It’s not you...really. ::buries her face in her hands momentarily:: God, this shoreleave has been an utter disaster. My ex-husband shows up, kisses me, worms his way into my family reunion, I deck him and Jansen loses it on him. ::clasps a hand to her mouth and groans:: Then I say something I’m not supposed to. I’m sorry.

::CD wrapped an arm around her shoulder in a comforting gesture, the sort of thing a friend would do if one was afraid of a lightning storm. His next words were full of cheesy cliche, but needed to be said.::

Skyfire: It’s going to be fine, Lael. Look to the future.

Rosek: ::leans her head against his shoulder:: ::murmurs:: I’m so lost, Chythar. I can’t even tell what’s real anymore.

Skyfire: I’m real. Jansen’s real.

::She sat her wine down, hugging him tightly and buried her face in his shoulder.::

Rosek: ::muffled:: What would I do without you?

::To that, he gave a somewhat clueless shrug.::

Skyfire: Marry Jansen, which you were probably going to anyway if I hadn’t shown up? Other than that, I don’t have a clue.

Rosek: ::smiles wanly:: You have no idea how special you are, do you? ::kisses his cheek:: Really. You are.

Stripey: oO Special? Come on, that’s almost worse than being called “cute.” You have no idea… Oo

::CD tensed just a little bit, as for the first time in a long time the Stripey portion of his mind came out with a snarky commentary.::

Skyfire: I don’t really know. My time with my new adopted family helped a bit, but maybe Alex will help me figure out the rest.

Rosek: ::laughs:: Tell whoever it is in your head to shut it. He’s kind of ruining a nice moment.

Skyfire: You know about Stripey. How could you tell it was him I was arguing with?

Rosek: ::murmurs:: I notice things.

Skyfire: ::glanced at his watch.:: We should get going. Wouldn’t want to miss the party.

Rosek:  ::pulls back and straightens her yellow cotton sundress:: No, we wouldn’t. I hear there’ll be an awards ceremony, too.

Skyfire: I hate parties. After the last one...as long as there’s no press, I guess I’ll be okay.

Rosek: ::laughs:: You’ll do fine. Just ignore Stripey.

::He gave a sigh and tried once again to let his body relax. The damned striped nuisance inside his mind was making relaxation tricky because he was always coming up with a snarky comment or memory from his past. It took him a few breaths to relax to the point of being capable of functioning without Stripey.::

Skyfire: Sure you don’t want a mint before we go? And I promise, I won’t let on I know.

Rosek: ::smiles:: You gave me one, remember? ::holds up her hand::

Skyfire: Oh, right. To the party then. ::He put his box of mints back in his pocket and offered his arm, then considered whether that’d be a good idea. Jansen might kill him.:: Where’s Jansen at, anyway?

Rosek: He had an appointment that ran late. He’ll meet us there.

Skyfire: Shall I escort you, lass?

Rosek: ::snickers:: Such a gentleman. ::slides her hand into the crook of his arm:: ::horrible imitation of his accent:: Lead on, laddie.

::CD smirked and led the way out to the turbolift and the party. The way was clear, and he didn’t say a word the entire way down. Mostly because he was never ready for parties.::
