SIM:Lael Rosek - Can't Sleep? Part II (Veritas)

Author's Note: Takes place after Lael and Chythar’s “After the Hocktin, Part III”, but before Lael and Chythar’s “A Fresh Start, Part I”.

:: Lael grinned and leaned forward, entering a series of commands into the PADD in his hands. A familiar face replaced the black screen, waving at him. ::

Maddy: Hi, Uncle Chythar! I finally finished my science project! Lael said I should record this for you...with your birthday coming up and all. ::blows a kiss:: By the way, happy birthday!

:: Chythar watched quietly, a smile crossing his face as his young niece presented everything with an astounding amount of detail. He had never met any child as gifted with words as Maddy had been during that presentation. ::

:: Lael smiled as, in the holovid, Maddy went on to present her science project to him. When the video ended, Lael again laid her hand on top of his and kissed his cheek, murmuring into his ear.::

Rosek: Thank you...for helping her. It meant so much to her that you took the time even with things as they were at the time.

Skyfire: What was her final grade on this?

Rosek: :: smiles :: Her teacher...the one back on Earth...said it was the best project in her grade. She thinks I should look into enrolling Maddy in a gifted program. There are a few that will give her scholarships if she decides to major in either science or medicine.

Skyfire: You should think about it. She loves medicine, as evident by this. :: nodding toward the padd. ::

Rosek: ::nods:: I plan to, yes. ::pauses:: To be honest, it played a big part in my choice to bring her to the Veritas...that video. She loves you so much, Chythar, and I couldn’t bear to take that from her...not after all she’s already been through. I’m convinced that, with you in her life, she’ll become an amazing doctor someday. ::smiles:: Just like her Uncle Chythar.

Skyfire: Awww… :: He blushed a bit. ::

Rosek: ::murmurs:: It’s true. The Skyfire Cure...my surgery...the Hocktin virus…Yes, Alora pulled rank and made it happen. But it was your idea that drove it all. You’re brilliant and you don’t give yourself nearly enough credit for that.

Skyfire: Ah didnae do anything. You’re the one who got the blood sample, aye?

Rosek: ::laughs:: Now I feel like you’re fishing, Skyfire. ::smiles:: You know very well that if you hadn’t figured out the virus, that blood sample wouldn’t have done a thing.

:: Was it really his idea that saved them? Not on his own. He had to give Dassa some credit as well, even if their experiences with Morticia weren’t the greatest collaboration in their careers. ::

Skyfire: Dassa helped too.

Rosek: ::smiles and rolls her eyes:: Yet another social lesson, Chythar. When someone gives you a compliment, a simple ‘thank you’ is the appropriate response.

Skyfire: Damn social inhibitions.

Rosek: ::smiles:: I will rid you of this annoying tendency you have to accept blame when it’s not your fault and refuse compliments when you’re earned it if it takes the rest of my natural life to do so.

:: He nodded slightly in agreement. He was flabbergasted, and speechless. ::

Rosek: ::grins and pats his hand:: Come on. ::stands and grabs her now empty mug of tea:: We should make sure our things are ready to be transferred to the Veritas.

:: He nodded again and followed, taking the PADD in his hand as he headed back with her to their temporary quarters. ::
