Lieutenant Jackford B. Kolk & PNPC Aliah the Kitten - "The Whole Kitten Cab-oodle"
((Deck A, USS Ronin - Stardate 238511.02))

::After helping Sarah move all her things over to the Independenceand kissing her farewell on the ramp, Jack had gone to confession and then wandered over to the promenade to follow an "order" that Sarah had given her the last time he'd told her that he'd miss her. She'd said, "Get a cat." So... he got a cat. Well, a kitten, to be precise. A cute little calico that reminded him of Sarah. He didn't feel right about naming the kitten Sarah, so he called the precious little thing Aliah, Lt.J.G. Reed's middle name. Carrying little Aliah in a collapsible case that was something like a tent, Jack returned to his quarters, he wondered what to do with himself until his duties resumed, most likely with a briefing the next morning.::

((Kolk's Quarters))

::Placing the case on the floor, along with a box of kitten paraphernalia he'd been carrying in his off-hand, he waited for the door to close. Once it had, he pressed a touch-key that instantly released the connection on the seams of the case. It's two upright sides collapsed outwardly onto the floor and Aliah was free.::

::Glancing upward, little Aliah sniffed the air. Where had the walls gone? They'd been such wonderful playthings, all smooth and flexible: perfect for poking and chewing. She looked around her and noticed the same fuzzy-headed human that had picked her up from the cage where she'd lived with her siblings and mother all her life, stuck his face in hers, and smiled. He seemed nice enough, but... where had he taken her? She slowly walked the room, starting with the walls, which smelled... boring. From there she explored the furniture. It was better, a little friendlier smelling. Definitely needed clawing later.::

::Jack watched his new roommate wander off. Knowing she'd need some time to adjust to the place, he unpacked the box, pulling out a self-cleaning litter box, food and water bowls, supplies to fill the aforementioned items, and, of course, toys. Six tiny toy mice, with catnip and a mysterious piece of technology that animated the things and made them hover (or slide or something) toward the tiny control box whenever you pressed the button. The pet-store owner hadn't been terribly clear on how it worked, but he'd insisted that it was a must for any cat owner because, "If you don't have that thing, you'll be getting new toys ever time you come back on leave." In the olden days, when money was everything, they probably didn't mind making toys that your pets would conveniently loose for you, thus forcing you to return to their stores and give them more money. But in the 24th Century, money was irrelevant, so someone who wanted to spend his life inventing ingenious cat toys could do so and not have to worry about the worries of small businesses, taxes, and supply & demand.::

::Eventually, Aliah returned to where the fuzzy man had released her. But there were new things there. Sniffing them, she instantly recognized their scent. It was pure joy! She attempted to lick one, but the joy was beyond her reach. She knew then what must be done: she must kill these tiny joy-filled creatures and steal their joy. But hunting was never as simple as that, and so she backed away slowly, lowering her shoulders and head to the ground, and raising her hind end. Wagging her bottom slightly, she could tell the joy-hiders had been successfully lulled into a false sense of security, so she pounced!::

::Jack laughed, and watched Aliah play for a short while. Looking away for a second, he was struck by the emptiness of his quarters. Granted, he'd never spent much time there in the first place, but... even if he'd wanted to invite someone he didn't know who any more. All of his closest friends had been transferred to the Indy. Even Sarion had gone over to the other side. But what was this on the table? He picked up the bottle of Scotch and opened the note that was attached.::

Note: "Jack,
As we move on into new adventures, may you have all the happiness and luck in the world... and beyond it. Good luck with Sarah! And remember, I'm only a message away; stay in touch... And enjoy!
~Sarion"

::Looking down at the adorable little kitten, he smiled and knew he'd at least managed a small amount of happiness, the luck however... was yet to be seen.::

Kolk: ::testing out the name:: Aliah.

::The tiny kitten looked up at him for the briefest of moments. She thought the tall one had said something - for the first time since taking her from her home - but he didn't seem too intent on talking to her, so she wasn't going to worry about it. This joy-hider was wearing down. She stood on her hind legs and tried to scoop it up toward her fearsome maw. It was clearly afraid, but somehow it was still managing to elude her claws. This was unacceptable. She rolled onto her side and forced it into her mouth, curving her two front paws and crossing them in front of her as she chewed on her victim's neck. The joy was getting closer. She could feel it!::

::Jack smiled. The name definitely fit the little hunter. She reminded him of Sarah: coy, playful, unpredictable... and capable of disturbingly attractive viciousness. It was wonderful. He reached down and lifted the young kitten away from her prey.::

Aliah: oO Hey! I almost had it! I can taste the joy on the tips of my teeth! Oo

::Having made the connection, she quickly licked her teeth and knew that she was right. But soon, the taste was gone, and she glared at the tall one. What gave him the right to-- oooh that's wonderful! She closed her eyes contentedly. He'd found just the spot that needed scratching under her left jaw. She pressed her head against his strong, loving finger.::

Aliah: oO Ooooh. I like you, Tall Man. Oo

::As he craddled her in his arm and scratched her jaw, the pair smiled at each other. This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship...::
