Born on the homeworld, Rinev is the second son of Ry'lek Shryn, the head of a minor clan (keth) and a Captain in the Andorian Imperial Guard, and Kyss Rollis a minor diplomatic attache to the ambassador to the Rigellian Assembly. His parents have long since drifted apart with many on Andoria attributing this to their non-traditional union.
At 18, Rinev began training to be a member of the Andorian Imperial Guard like his father and brother but after a year or so he realised he wanted to forge his own path and looked to Starfleet. He joined the academy at 21 - much to his mother's delight and his father's dismay. He majored in helm and navigation with a minor in Communications and Operations. Rinev also has some capacity for tactical systems owing to his short time in the Imperial Guard (who put more of a focus on this) but he opted to not study this at the academy.
