Ry'lek ch'Shryn

Ry'lek ch'Shryn is the father of Rinev. A stern man, Ry'Lek is a Captain in the Andorian Imperial Guard and proud leader of the Shryn Keth, a minor clan on the Andoria. Born in 2345 Ry'lek had a privileged upbringing, Keth Shryn was more prominent thanks to the work of his Charan Thoss ch'Shryn, a adjunct to a member of the Kethni Council and his Shreva General Ezozia sh'Shryn, a high ranking member of the Imperial Guard. Between them they worked on using their positions to promote the interests of the keth. They attempted to drill this belief into their children, however Ry'lek's Zhavey Thryra wanted her children to focus on more than the keth and was concerned the focus on the the clan and Andoria would create an entire generation of insular Andorians that would isolate their family and their keth for a generation. As he grew Ry'lek listened to his Zhavey more than any other parent and was an eager and inquisitive because of it. For a time he aspired to join Starfleet and explore the galaxy, however he was talked out of it by Thoss, Ezozia and his Thavan, Atys. Instead he joined the Imperial Guard. When he was 18 his Zhavey died in an accident on a Federation vessel that was classified by Starfleet, frustrated by this, the first seeds of doubt surrounding the Federation were planted in Ry'lek's mind.

When he was 22 he met Kyss zh'Rollis - a young and adventurous Andorian woman who was attending the the university at Dira. Ry'lek, seeing similarities to his recently deceased Zhavey was immediately infatuated with the woman and pursued her. They were very much in love, and both put aside the traditional Andorian bonding in favour of an exclusive relationship between the two of them, an act frowned upon in Andorian society. Ry'Lek and Kyss were happy for a time but found themselves wanting children. Due to Andorian physiology this was not easy, they had to seek out donors to aid them in the goal of children. They had to do this quietly due to the taboo of the act, but eventually found two willing donors and had their first child Shoth in 2369 and their second - Rinev - in 2371. They were initially happy with their life, it was simple for a brief time but both Kyss and Ry'lek were eager to continue their careers which caused clashes between the two as one would have been required to look after their two children. In 2376 Kyss accepted a position as an attache to the ambassador to the Rigellian embassy which meant she was off-planet for long periods of time. In 2378 in became clear that Kyss had become involved with the another member of the ambassadors staff and chose to leave Ry'lek. This devastated Ry'lek, and confirmed his distaste for the Federation. He blamed the his mates chosen career path and the Federation for the split and not the increased distance between the two for their break.

After Kyss left, Ry'Lek returned to his Keth confirmed in the ideals his family had tried to teach him has a younger man. He was joined in a bond with three others and assumed a more prominent role in the Imperial Guard, gaining a promotion to Captain. Shoth and Rinev were left in the care of their grandparents and their new step-family while he took on more and more assignments for the guard. He had two more children with his new bondmates and in 2381 after the death of his father Thoss he was chosen to be the head of Keth Shryn. His reputation had however been ruined by his relationship with Kyss and his increasingly isolationist views had the effect of isolating the keth. He attempted to instill this belief in his children, but like his parents he failed and both Shoth and Rinev became very pro-Federation - thanks to their mother who they were both close with. He distanced himself from Rinev when he joined Starfleet, the only real contact he has made with his son was to send him a bottle of 2360 vintage Andorian Ale upon his son's graduation from the academy.

Personal History

Born on the homeworld, Rinev is the second son of Ry'lek Shryn, the head of a minor clan (keth) and a Captain in the Andorian Imperial Guard, and Kyss Rollis a minor diplomatic attache to the ambassador to the Rigellian Assembly. His parents we never in a traditional union and so the birth of both Rinev and his elder brother Shoth were artificial, donors were used where required. His parents have long since drifted apart with many on Andoria attributing this to their non-traditional union. His father has since entered into a new four way union which has lead to the birth of his younger siblings.

At 18, Rinev began training to be a member of the Andorian Imperial Guard like his father and brother but after a year or so he realised he wanted to forge his own path and looked to Starfleet. He joined the academy at 21 - much to his mother's delight and his father's dismay. He majored in helm and navigation with a minor in Communications and Operations. Rinev also has some capacity for tactical systems owing to his short time in the Imperial Guard (who put more of a focus on this) but he opted to not study this at the academy.
