Background
Rhylan Ward was born in Providence, Rhode Island, Earth in the year 2359. Their mother is El-Aurian and father Human, and the unique culture and genetics of their El-Aurian heritage has greatly shaped their life. Rhylan is the only child of their father, but curiously does not know if they have any half-siblings. Their mother, who is currently almost 400 Earth (or Terran) years old, does not discuss past periods of her life with her family, considering it to be disrespectful to the limited time she will have with a human partner.
Rhylan found through genetic testing at a young age that they are likely to live far longer than a human, though it is unknown if their lifespan will match that of a full-blooded El-Aurian. Taking advantage of the promise of a long life - and a long adolescence - Rhylan devoted significant time to academic studies. They earned an MD and PhD in social psychology from Brown University and spent several years practicing medicine. They ultimately found the experience unrewarding, and were regularly bothered by the mistrust of their patients who felt Rhylan looked "inexperienced" and "young" because of their slow aging. Rhylan moved to San Francisco to participate in a fellowship in trauma medicine that was sponsored by Starfleet. It was there that Rhylan decided Starfleet would be an ideal way to practice medicine for those in dangerous and inaccessible parts of the galaxy. They entered Starfleet through the Officer Candidate School for established career professionals. (OOC - for simplicity sake I've simmed Rhylan as a Starfleet Academy graduate in training, but in reality this seems like far and away the most likely route for a doctor to enter)
Despite being very skillful in medicine, Rhylan is hopeless with engineering, tactics, and combat - and has few to no practical skills that don't concern treating patients. Interestingly for a Starfleet officer, they also have a mild phobia of being in space that they are constantly working to keep in-check. Rhylan is friendly and approachable, and always willing to listen to anyone - a point of pride for an El-Aurian, a species known colloquially as "the listeners." But Rhylan rarely chooses to share themselves, so they struggle to make close friends and are often just seen as a "friendly ear."
