"May the Queens smile upon all of your endevours."
a Remmilian greeting.
The Remmilian are a species of peace loving humanoid insects. One that has embraced the ideals of the Federation and is willing to supply workers for many large projects.

History

They have no recorded period of social unrest, no internal wars, no negative outside contact with other species and no natural disasters. They have developed at a very slow rate. This seems to have been influenced by the fact that there was no incentive to work harder or faster towards creating new technology.

Their environment was stable, growing seasons were long allowing a minimum of 2 sets of crops each year.

The Remmilian are in an out of the way section of the Federation, well off the beaten path and nowhere near any strategic features or important borders. In fact they were basically ignored by the Federation until 2318 when they contacted the USS Fiji. This science vessel happened to be close by doing scans of a nearby white dwarf star.

This contact resulted in a small diplomatic party of Remmilian’s being transported on the USS Fiji to Starbase 17. As a result of this contact friendly relations were established and in the wake of the Dominion War they were approved for admission.

Since then they have supplied a truly astounding number of workers to help with numerous terraforming and rebuilding projects. Including over 250 million workers to help rebuild Risa after it was destroyed by the Borg in 2381.

Government

The have a unique government system. They are ruled over by a monarchy of 13 female queens. Every 13 years a new queen is born. It takes that queen 13 years to mature at which time the oldest queen steps down and is replaced. Surprisingly enough the queen that is replaced is the mother of her replacement. As a result each queen serves for 169 years.

Description

This humanoid species has thick gray skin, large bug like eyes and thin feelers extending out of their face on both sides of their mouth. On average the males stand about 5’ to 5’6” tall and weigh between 100 to 120 lbs. The males are approximately twice as strong as they appear and live between 50 to 75 years.

The females on the other hand are slightly taller and thinner and tend to live between 150 to 200 years. Another unusual fact is that there is only a small fraction of their total population that is female. Say about 1 in every 2,000.

Physiology

For a humanoid species they have a fairly simplistic physiology with some complex hormones, enzymes and chemicals. However they are very resilient and seem to be able to take more damage than expected before their system shuts down. This may be due to the limited number of specialized internal organs all of which have duplicate backups located in other areas of their bodies.

Viscous Compound

Both the males and the females excrete a viscous compound that hardens fairly quickly into a translucent and iridescent material that is as hard as steel. In the case of the males they can produce fairly large amounts of this material but it is of a noticeably inferior quality to that produced by the females. Also if they produce too much of it medical records have indicated that it can greatly reduce their life span.

The females are incapable of producing it in any great quantity and the quality of their excretions is noticeable superior to that of the males. As a result it is only used to create incredible works of art.

Psychology

They seem to have a very basic set of emotional responses or reactions. These seem to also have a corresponding effect on the other Remmilian around them. Almost like a hive mind reaction. However this unusual effect seems to be limited to a fairly small area. Best of all they usually tend to be very laid back and relaxed and it takes a great deal of sensory input to trigger radical emotional reactions that can and do cascade over into those around them.

Religion

The Great Mother, Queen of All, is the deity that the females worship. The males do not worship any gods except maybe their queens. For the females this involves stopping and laying down flat on their back with a clear view of the night sky at around midnight every night. Then they chant an ancient tune that’s meaning has been lost to them for about an hour.

Mythology

The females have a series of tales about the Great Mother, Queen of All. Seems she was the first female of their species and she established the right of females to rule over the males. All of the tales involve her proving that females are superior to males and were born to lead and rule.

Society

Theirs is a matriarchal society with the females holding all the important positions and the males doing all the hard, repetitive, boring or dangerous work. This makes sense when you realize that there are approximately 2,000 males for every female.

Their cities and towns are works of art. Created by the excretion of a viscous compound that hardens fairly quickly into a translucent and iridescent material that is as hard as steel. The males live on the lower levels and the females live in towers or the upper levels in any large community.

Crime is unknown among them and everyone is provided for and given a purpose with in their communities.

Culture

While the males use their excretion of a viscous compound to build with the females use theirs to create incredible works of art. In many ways the quality of the material they produce is far superior to anything the males could produce.

Customs

At the age of 13 every female selects up to 20 males to serve as their mates. The males do not have any say in this at all. These males then act as servants, bodyguards, companions and nannies.

Technology

As a species they are noticeable behind most of the other Federation member worlds when it comes to their level of technology. They have basic warp drives with a maximum speed of warp 2.3.

They can spin a crystalline webbing that can be used in building construction, as seen used in their central museum. This material is very strong, weather resilient and can be shaped into almost any form, shape or style. It normally has a translucent and iridescent quality to it.

Economy

They are very self-sufficient and do not have or need much in the way of off world goods or raw materials. This being said they do conduct a little trade and have a few small long term trade deals in place but nothing really worth mentioning.

Crystalline Webbing

Even before they became a member of the Federation their greatest export has been the incredible works of art created by the females using the excretion of a viscous compound that hardens into a material as hard as steel that has a translucent and iridescent quality to it.

Workers

The Remmilian routinely supply more than 500 million male workers to the Federation to be employed in anyway and in any location required by the Federation. The payment that they received in exchange for this was the construction of a large commercial space station in orbit of their planet and the agreement that the Federation would feed, house and supply the workers with any medical or other materials required by them.

Military

They have none and have never needed any. Their world has very little that would make it interesting to other species and no large abundant sources of raw materials or precious commodities. Also they have never had any recorded internal conflicts.

A small number of females have enlisted in Starfleet. So far all of them have become officers. Their 20 male mates have also enlisted as crewmen. In an agreement with the Federation a female Remmilian will always be posted to a ship, facility or other assignment with all of her mates.

There have also been a small number of unattached males who have enlisted as well. About half of them join the Marines and the other half Starfleet. In both cases only a handful have ever become officers. The majority have joined the ranks and serve as normal everyday crewman and soldiers.

Federation Intelligence Files

Since joining the Federation they have constantly supplied over 500 million workers to assist with various work projects including the rebuilding of Risa after it was destroyed by the Borg.

The Federation built a large commercial space station in orbit of their home world. However well over 95% of the traffic through the station is that of transporting workers off world to various locations within the Federation.
