The Remans are a humanoid race from the planet Remus. They have been working in the service of the Romulans since at least 2154. (ENT: "United", "The Aenar")

Remus is a tidally locked planet, and hence the Remans, who reside on the planet's dark side, cannot withstand light very well. (It is not known whether the Remans are descended from Romulans who colonised Remus' dark side or are native to the planet, although the latter is more likely. It's also possible that Remans are the product of intermarriage between Romulans and some species native to either Romulus and Remus, or they could be genetically-modified Romulans similar to Human Augments). When the Romulans arrived in the Romulan system and colonized Romulus, they subjugated the Remans relegating them to the status of second-class citizens, an undesired caste, and forced them to work in the dilithium mines. (Star Trek: Nemesis)

Since they were feared fighters among the Romulan people, Romulan senators often had Reman bodyguards to intimidate possible opponents. (ENT: "United", "The Aenar")

Remans are also often used as "cannon fodder" by the Romulans. They were often deployed during the Dominion War in the fiercest engagements.

In 2379, the Remans usurped power from their Romulan overlords in a military coup, placing one of their own, Shinzon (actually a Human), as the Praetor of the Romulan Senate. Praetor Shinzon then proceeded to attempt to destroy Earth with his warbird, the Scimitar, as the beginning of a war against the United Federation of Planets.

However, the Scimitar was destroyed in a battle with the USS Enterprise-E in the Bassen Rift. Shinzon's supporters on Romulus turned against him, prematurely ending the bid for Reman superiority. ("Star Trek: Nemesis")

Some Remans, if not all, possess telepathic abilities similar to, though apparently more powerful than, those of Vulcans. ("Star Trek: Nemesis")
