Deena was born at a monastery on Bajor to two clerics of the Kevalan Order, a recognized but unincorporated community providing public health services to remote mountain villages in the Dakhur and Hill Provinces. Like her siblings and the other monks' children, Deena grew up learning her parents' trades: faith and medicine. Under the non-Federation law of the time, Deena began her formal training at the age of fourteen, working alongside and learning from her parents.

By the time Bajor joined the Federation, Deena was nearly seventeen and thought she'd had enough of medical training. She joined Starfleet and majored in Intelligence at the Academy. Two years in, she realized that she hated Intelligence work and switched back to a medical focus. Despite this, she managed to complete her Academy coursework on time and entered medical school. She then transferred to Starbase 118 to complete her training.
