Pre-Academy History
Meira was born shortly after the Federation/Cardassian treaty was signed in 2370, and she comes from a long line of military people. Her grandfather and her father both fought in the resistance to free Bajor from the Cardassians. Before the occupation, her ancestors all served the Bajoran Militia, going back six generations. Her mother, however, serves as a vedek aboard DS9. With such a religiously strong mother, Meira has a strong faith in the prophets, and believes it is the will of the Prophets for her to become a Starfleet Officer.
Academy History
While at the academy, Meira was called "Five" as a nickname based upon her surname. While she excelled in classes where she can actually do things and put her training into practice, her scores often suffered in classes where she learned nothing but facts and figures. While she may not have been the best of her class, she did make enough of the grades needed to pass. Oftentimes, she was noted for coming up with goofy ideas and going against the probabilities when a desperate solution was needed. Even though it often worked for her, most of her classmates called it lucky that she succeeded, while she attributed it to her faith in the Prophets.
