"Understanding how and why the physical form works the way it does is essential to understanding how to treat it."

a Pahkwa-thanh proverb.
The Pahkwa-thanh are a species of intelligent carnivorous and predatory reptiles that closely resemble therapod dinosaurs from Earth. Strangely enough they are not normally aggressive unless provoked.

History

The Pahkwa-thanh evolved over time from one of their world’s most successful reptilian predators. When you consider the fact that they were not the largest, strongest or even the most savage predator this might be considered unusual. However while most of the other predators hunted alone they very early on developed the ability to work and hunt in small packs.

Most experts agree that this was clearly an indication that the early Pahkwa-thanh were most likely more intelligent than most of the other life forms around them. As time passed this intelligence allowed them to develop the primitive tools and the skills needed to create communities.

What seems to have most experts confused is the fact that their seems to be no records to indicate that there were ever any conflicts between either these early communities or the more technologically advanced ones that followed. This is considered to be a very unusual attitude coming as it does from such a clearly aggressive, predatory species.

Regardless they continued to evolve, developing new technology and over time peacefully making the transition into an industrial powered civilization. It is at this time that the ground work for a unified planet wide system of government was first established.

By the time they had developed the technology needed to create space craft in 2187 they had already had a unified planetary government for over 500 years. They had also had extremely aggressive anti-pollution and numerous ecological sound directives in place for almost as long that were designed to preserve their world’s environment.

They encountered their first alien species in 2202 and while it was peaceful there was a very marked degree of anti-social and negative aggressive sentiment that seemed to be motivated towards them by the other species. This caused them to alter their research priorities in order to develop some defensive weapons and systems as well as improving on their overall space craft technology.

With the development of warp drive technology in 2233 they were able explore the universe around them. This quickly brought them into contact with the Federation. As a result of this contact they soon realized that they had a lot in common with the basic principles upon which the Federation was built. This motivated them to apply for membership in 2347.

In 2360 they became members of the Federation with many of their people quickly finding new challenges as members of numerous medical research projects or at many of the medical teaching facilities to be found all over the Federation.

Government

They have a three part government where each section is responsible for one third of the responsibilities of that government. All of these branches select their members by an election process that is based on an elaborate debating system.

Ministry of Infrastructure and Growth

This branch of the government is responsible for the overall care, maintenance, construction and development of every aspect of the planets various forms and types of infrastructure and public facilities.

Ministry of Science and Medicine

This branch of the government is responsible for the overall care, maintenance, construction and development of every aspect of the planets technological research, development and implementation. It also takes care of their medical facilities and various educational programs and institutions.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Economy

This branch of the government is responsible for their relationships with all other governments and species. This includes their interactions with the Federation. They are also responsible for the production, distribution and all external trade deals.

Description

They are large, powerfully built reptilian bipeds with a passing resemblance to the therapod dinosaurs of ancient Earth. This class of dinosaurs walked upright on two legs and had two smaller arms and a long tail. Various types of Raptors and the T-Rex were considered to be therapods.

On average they stand between 5’8” and 6’4” with long tails which are on average between 4 and 6 feet long. They have large heads with strong jaws equipped with two rows of razor sharp teeth and razor sharp claws on the end of each of their two fingers and one thumb.

Physiology

As with most intelligent species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They have most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most intelligent species.

Carnivorous and predatory by nature, the Pahkwa-thanh feed upon live prey. Pahkwa-thanh do not like extreme cold, due to their reptilian nature and they have a thick tough leathery hide.

ESP

While some members of the species are known to possess empathic abilities, most members of the species have no measurable empathic talent.

Psychology

Strangely enough for a species that started out as a savage predatory hunter they have a remarkable low aggression level. For the most part they are very logical, intelligent, calm and patient.

They have very few cases of mental instability or other forms of mental health issues. Most of these are caused by advanced age, some form of injury or serious infection and most can and do have fairly advanced forms of treatment available.

Religion

Their spiritual beliefs encourage the understanding that their prey animals are sentient and in possession of a soul. As such, the Pahkwa-thanh have great respect for the animals that their hunting parties chase down and kill.

Pahkwa-thanh do not consider themselves separate from the natural order. However, they do not hunt Humanoids or other "civilized" races as these peoples do consider themselves outside of nature; to disrespect this belief by feeding upon them would be rude, and rudeness is intolerable to the Pahkwa-thanh culture.

Mythology

They have a confusing and complex series of tales and legends that verge on prophetic and even simplistic at times. Most can be interpreted in at least a dozen different ways and all seem to have multiple meanings, lessons and or symbolology wrapped up into each story.

Society

Strangely enough they are an extremely respectful and courteous species. Under normal conditions they would never dream of offering any kind of an insult to anyone and even when they do, even their insults work on a system of courtesy.

Among themselves crime is unheard of and violence against another sentient being other than to hunt and feed was and for the most part still is completely unacceptable. Since becoming a member of the Federation they have had to adapt and most of their larger communities now have a police unit dedicated to dealing with interspecies conflicts or misunderstandings.

Their communities are extremely well designed and laid out with adequate infrastructure, recreational facilities and other amenities available to the entire population. They are clean, spacious with plenty of natural vegetation growing everywhere.

Culture

While they have excellent hearing they tend to prefer visual forms of artistic expression. However since becoming members of the Federation they have imported many different types and styles of music for their enjoyment. They still do not seem interested in making or creating any music of their own.

The most common type of visual arts to be found on their world are sculptures and statues. This is followed by their use of natural growing plants to create visual pleasing displays. Normally they will combine the two to create unique contrasts and an every changing visual affect.

Customs

Carnivorous and predatory by nature, the Pahkwa-thanh feed upon live prey. Their spiritual beliefs encouraged the understanding that their prey animals are sentient and in possession of a soul. Pahkwa-thanh propriety precluded hunting any sapient species that did not accept its role as prey.

Male Pahkwa-thanh raise the young, and a male aims to prove both his skill as a caregiver and his strength and aggression (so he is capable of protecting the young) in order to convince females to mate with him. He provides food for the young by injecting smaller prey animals with a paralyzing toxin and bringing them back to the nest alive.

Alpha males may take many mates, Beta males less. A Gamma male like Shenti Yisec Eres Ree will have difficulty attracting a mate.

Technology

While they tend to be slightly behind most other Federation member worlds in most areas they excel at medicine and since becoming members of the Federation have become involved in numerous medical research programs and most of the larger medical teaching facilities as well.

Economy

While they are for the most part self-sufficient they have established a number of long term trade arrangements that since becoming members of the Federation have been increased.

Military

Being intelligent they realized very quickly the need to be able to protect themselves. As a result shortly after they established first contact with another intelligent species they were forced to begin a program to build and create a military force to protect their homeworld and home system in case of attack.

Since becoming members of the Federation they have sold off 2/3 of their military vessels. Most of these were the older vessels that they considered to be obsolete. The 8 that they have kept are all destroyer class, well maintained and about half of them are usually out on patrol.

Currently they have about an equal distribution of them serving in Starfleet and the Marines with the majority of those being in the medical profession.

Federation Intelligence Files

The Pahkwa-thanh are a species of space-faring reptiles which were in contact with the United Federation of Planets in the 24th century.

Humans were known to be rather uncomfortable around members of the species due to their passing resemblance to the dinosaurs of prehistoric Earth.

Only around 100 members of the species, including Doctor Shenti Yisec Eres Ree, were serving in Starfleet in the late 2370s. However, they have contributed greatly to Federation medical science since becoming members in 2360.

Mirror Universe

In the mirror universe, the Pahkwa-thanh were a species of space-faring reptiles which were allied with the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance during the 24th century. They are large, powerfully built bipeds with strong jaws, sharp teeth and a passing resemblance to a therapod dinosaur.

In spite of the fact that the Klingons were generally not comfortable with sentient species shaped differently than themselves, they respected the Pahkwa-thanh's predatory nature. The Klingons had lost thousands of warriors to their failed attempt to conquer the Pahkwa-thanh homeworld. Granting such honorable and songworthy deaths to so many warriors was the Klingon idea of a generous diplomatic overture so the two species became stalwart allies.

In 2376, Doctor Shenti Yisec Eres Ree was a Pahkwa-thanh medical researcher in the service of the Alliance who conducted experiments on the Irriol population of Lru-Irr.
