Member Expectations


All active simmers on the USS Oumuamua are required to meet the following expectations:

1. Communicate

In an email-based activity such as simming, communication is fundamental. We are all participating in this game as a pastime and understand commitments outside may keep you from simming. That said, unless it is an emergency, you are expected to give your fellow players and your command team the courtesy of a short email to let us know if something comes up that will keep you from participating for more than a few days. A "Hey, sorry, this week is crazy! Please feel free to move on!" message is all you need to send to the OOC list.

When notifying the crew, you must use email. A message on Discord is not acceptable notice.
Maintaining good communication between you and your fellow players and command team is the most basic requirement before any consideration of promotion or assignment to a special role such as mission-specific NPC, department head, mission facilitator, etc.

2. Sim Regularly

The 'Oumuamua adheres to the fleet standard of an average of 3 sims a week/12 sims a month to be considered a full-time player. You are welcome to sim more than twelve times a month, but a minimum of twelve sims is expected of all simmers. If you have difficulty simming at that pace, please contact the command team to be marked as a part-time simmer. The requirement for part-time simmers is an average of 2 sims a week/8 sims a month.

You must be simming at full-time status to be eligible for a department head position.

Unfortunately, those who cannot sim at least twice a week are unable to keep up with the story in an enjoyable fashion for either them or their fellow players. People tag them less, and then they feel they have less to contribute, and it becomes a vicious cycle. If your circumstances have changed, please let us know, and we can try to find a solution, which may include taking a leave of absence.

Another good guideline is to keep this in mind:

  • If it's been 36 hours, and everyone else in your current scene has simmed, then you may sim again.
  • If it's been 48 hours, and everyone else in your current scene has simmed, then you can sim again.
  • If it's been 72 hours, regardless of if everyone in your current scene has simmed, you should sim again.

3. Sim Appropriately and from the Perspective of Your Character

Your sims should come from the perspective of your character(s) and drive the story forward. Descriptions/narration and thoughts that originated in sims for other characters should always be removed and the events of the sim retold from your characters' perspective.

Our content rating aboard 'Oumuamua is equivalent to the Motion Picture Association of America's PG-13 rating. This is content that may not be suitable for those under the age of 13 yet not so explicit as to be rated R (restricted). PG-13 is what the last four Star Trek movies (Nemesis, Star Trek/2009, Into Darkness, and Beyond) as well as Star Trek: First Contact were rated.

Note: The recent Star Trek shows Discovery and Picard are both rated TV-MA (mature audiences) and are equivalent to the R rating for films. While the content of these shows is considered canon for simming purposes, the explicit swearing and violence would not be appropriate on 'Oumuamua.
If you're not sure about a potential scene's rating, contact the command team.

Failure to meet the expectations listed above and/or violations of the UFOP Constitution will result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the 'Oumuamua and the UFOP: StarBase 118 RPG.

4. Observe Guidelines When You Sim Leave Time

Whenever the ship is in a period of leave, please observe these simming guidelines:

  • 1. Establish a min/max scene count per simmer to 1-3 during shore leave. In other words, every simmer should be in at least 1 scene, but no more than 3. If you're already in 3, then you should end a scene before beginning or joining another.
  • 2. Limit 4 sims per day per simmer. That counts across all characters and scenes, but not JPs in progress (it will count for the posting of JPs, though), which is why you should feel free to engage in point #3:
  • 3. Encourage JPing during leave, but respect the second guideline when doing so.
  • 4. If 3 days have passed, don't wait on others who haven't yet simmed. Push scenes forward after 3 days.
