Captain's Log

// Captain’s Log, Stardate 240205.15

We’re on final approach to Galaris IV (unofficially known as Kydon), a world whose history seems permanently etched in conflict. Officially, this is a diplomatic mission—an investigation into allegations of off-world interference in a war that’s been smoldering for decades. Both the Kobyar and Grunden governments have requested our presence, though it's hard to shake the feeling that we’re being drawn into a game where the rules are unclear and the stakes uneven.

There’s an uneasiness in my gut I can’t quite ignore. Kydon made first contact with the Federation just five years ago, but progress since then has stalled under the weight of instability. They’re a warp-capable world in name, but politically they remain fractured, volatile. And now, both sides claim that the other is being armed by foreign actors. Whether that’s true, or just a convenient narrative, is what we’re meant to find out. Starfleet wants answers—quiet ones. Facts without headlines. Influence without entanglement.

I’m under no illusions about the complexity of what lies ahead. The surface may present negotiations, but it’s the undercurrents I’m more concerned about. The planet is rich in rare minerals, strategically positioned along emerging trade corridors. That kind of resource rarely goes unnoticed. If someone is funneling weapons or technology into this civil war, it’s not out of ideology—it’s business.

This mission has the markings of a political minefield—one where missteps could have lasting consequences. We’ll deploy an away team once we enter orbit. Intelligence gathering, cultural observation, and hopefully, some straight answers. But I’m preparing for the reality that we might be walking into a conflict far more tangled than either side is willing to admit.

End log.\\

Observers Only

Addison MacKenzie called her XO, Talos Dakora into her Ready Room, prepared to give the Artemis-A's new orders. Heading for the Galaris system, they have been ordered by Starfleet Command to act as neutral investigators and observers in a decade long conflict between the two native species on the fourth planet. While it's a mission that has about a million different ways it could go wrong, orders are orders, and Addison MacKenzie summons her senior staff to the Briefing Room.

Both factions have now contacted the Federation with accusations. Each claims the other is receiving off-world military support—covert assistance that could violate the pre-membership Prime Directive. And both want us to prove they’re right.

Amphibious Technocrats

MacKenzie: If they’re serious about getting to the bottom of this, that’s a non-negotiable for me. They’ll have to allow access to all their materials. Any act of subterfuge is reason for suspicion.

Bergmen: They can hide all of that from our sensors, especially if they have outside help who would know we will definitely scan the planet to search for abnormalities. But still, there will be a paper trail. Logistics. Energy consumption. Black spots on the map. As they always say in those old holodramas - follow the latinum.

Richards: I will be honest. I don’t think you are giving them enough credit. This conflict has been going on for decades. I bet they’ve learned how to cover their tracks by now.

Silveira: This feels like running on the edge of a blade.

After splitting her senior staff in two separate away teams, Addison MacKenzie allows her own team to brainstorm ahead of their arrival to Galaris IV. While their mission brief is extremely clear that the team is to abstain from any participation in the conflict on the planetoid, Vitor Silveira raises the point that they should go armed regardless. As an active warzone, Galaris IV is hardly the ideal location for defenseless tourism. The team harbors well-founded concerns as to whether the Kobyar will be entirely truthful, but ultimately, they are unable to determine anything from the Bridge of the Artemis. Thus, an hour later, the team beams to the surface of Galaris IV, to the capital city of the Kobyar Faction. There, they are greeted by Major Indeethl Oolwi, their liaison to the Kobyar Defense Service, who is very accomodating to the Starfleet Away Team, immediately offering to add their biometric data to the Kobyar Defense Network to allow them unhindered access to their extensive surveillance network.

Tribal-Modern Warfare

After leaving the other away team in the Briefing Room, the team responsible for rendezvousing with the Grunden faction head away from Deck 1 while discussing what preparations might be necessary. Prepared for the eventuality that they are going to an world embroiled in active combat, they opt for caution in their preparations, including the late addition of newly-boarded Ensign Natasha Cole to their ranks. Just ahead of their planned beam down to the Grunden Capital, a message arrives from the surface that the Grunden General decided to change the location of their meeting, frustrating LT Vailani Zoyara, but the officers obey the change in plans. Arriving at a Base Camp allows the team the chance to properly examine Grunden technology up close, and they all remark upon the sophistication of the Grunden's warfare technology, just as they rendezvous with General Kexxin.
