Oz and Sal became friends, while Sal as still at the Academy. They had conversions on a variety of subjects over coffee, dinner, or drinks. Oz was glad to see the man's named as CO on the orders for his first duty posting.

Personality
Oz is a very caring warm friendly person, who tends to make friends easily. His interest lies in studying and understanding other people's culture, customs, and history. True to his people he has been quoted as being a good listener. Developing a patient and calm demeanor over his centuries-long lifespan. In addition, he has spent several years among the Ba'ku studying their "Perfect Moment in Time" technique.
Like most El-Aurians Oz believes one person can be capable of truly loving, and being intimately connected to more that one mate at a time. He also sees no harm in being temporally intimate with an individual, if it happens to occurr.
Background
Olen's parents Mara and Willon Zackan came across the earth in the year 1890, while traveling through the Milky Way galaxy. They took a keen interest in a species that looked, so much like them that they had to take a closer look. From that point on they began to study humans, then 5 years later Mara gave birth to Olen. They also adopt the more human-sounding surname Daniels.
Well on Earth the El-Aurians moved from country to country every 10 to 15 years. This was, so the humans they were in contact with wouldn't realize that they didn't age like a human. When he was old enough so I understand Oz's parents explained this fact to him.
Over the centuries Oz has had multiple different aliases has he moved from place to place. He also like his parents took an interest in studying people this; led to him getting PhDs in Anthropology, archeology, linguistics, and psychology.
In 2154, at the age of 259 Oz decided to voyage back to the El-Aurian homeworld. He arrived 2 El-Auria in 2204, but unfortunately Ian 2265 the Borg attacked and assimilated his people. Oz was one of the few survivors to escape and headed back for Earth. His fortunes would take another wrong turn. In 2293 he was on board one of two ships that got caught by the Nexus energy ribbon. He was one of only 47 rescued from that terrible disaster by a Starfleet vessel.
After that Oz returned to Earth to seek shelter, and take time to heal and morn from such losses. Eventually, when he was ready Oz decided his next adventure would be entering and graduating from Starfleet. He had almost 90 percent of the education already. He just had to go through the classes to be a trained Starfleet officer.
