Maximilian Kross was born to Alexander and Abigail in 237506.22 on a nondescript federation mining colony. Most of his formative years were uneventful as Max remained in the background of family and colony life. His interest in science exploded in his 3rd school year when his teacher gave him an actual paperbound book about the history of science. Learning everything he could about the world around him became an all consuming passion for him, while allowing him a safe place to be his cerebral self in the overly physical world of colony mining. Max never felt comfortable in the mining world, and never fit into life at the colony, or his own family either. His relationship with his father is strained and almost non existent with his mother. Although he has a reasonably good relationship with his older brother Max grew up in his shadow as his brother was the great gridiron star of the colony. He is closest with his younger sister, Chantell.
Max looked forward to becoming old enough so he could leave the mining colony, and planned on joining the merchant fleet as a way to get off planet and find more fulfilling experiences. His advanced placement scores however prompted his science teachers to push Max to apply to StarFleet Academy. Being accepted became the high point of Max's life, not only for the honor of entrance to the prestigious academy, but to also get him away from that lifestyle. Starfleet academy offered Max his greatest opportunities for learning, and he took advantage of it. Although he missed out on much of the social aspect of Starfleet Academy, he did well in his study of science. He received his degree in physics, his favorite subject, and now looks forward to contributing to the field.
