Background
The son of two Starfleet officers, Malik had the typical Starfleet brat upbringing. His father had decided to be the trailing spouse to his far more ambitious mother and was the primary caretaker while Malik was growing up. Given his extended family Iskandar had recognized early on that as a hybrid child Malik would benefit from, if not outright need, someone who had more expertise in these matters. He arranged it so that Malik would have regular counseling sessions with Ishani, both a fellow hybrid and Starfleet brat, while growing up and Ishani became emotionally more of an aunt than a distant cousin.
Like many of his fellow children of Starfleet members Malik decided to join Starfleet upon his majority, in his case because it was the life he knew and he knew that they were doing research that he was interested in. His initial assignments post graduation were less than ideal, filled with research subjects that he wasn’t interested in with budgets smaller than he would like. His luck turned when he was given a fellowship grant to research his speciality and even better when he was assigned to Starbase 118. That it was also the assignment of his cousin turned fellow officer didn’t even phase him.
