Background
Mack Campbell was born and raised on Mars Colony 3. His father was a security guard at a composites factory, and his mother worked as a nurse. Despite having a good relationship to his parents, Mack never aspired to follow in their footsteps professionally. He had an uncle, Emil, who ran a small trading vessel to and from the construction facilities at Utopia Planitia. It was on his vessel, Big Brown, that Mack discovered his love for starship mechanics and space travel. He accompanied his uncle on many trips, keeping the battered old Big Brown in working order as it ferried raw materials from place to place.
The first of his family to join the ranks of Starfleet, Mack aspired to one day live and work aboard a Starfleet vessel like the magnificent marvels of engineering he saw embark from the great Utopia Planitia fleet yards.
He would always remember his time at Starfleet with vibrant fondness. Quick to make friends and always open to new experiences, Mack tried his hand at everything from theatre to parrises squares. He proved to be a terrible actor and a middling athlete, but not for lack of enthusiasm. His mediocre grades were buoyed by a strong aptitude for engineering and ship mechanics. He may have struggled in a phaser range or a history exam room, but he had a knack for understanding the intricacies of warp dynamics and computer bank arrays. Throughout his Academy career, he would voraciously take as many advanced engineering courses as he could.
