"With the earth firmly below our feet only the mystery of the afterlife looms over us, a promise of something different, something unknown."
a Lurian proverb.
The Lurian are a humanoid species that tends to avoid conflict even though they are also considered to be strong and easily able to handle most physical confrontations and win. Most of their people seldom ever leave their homeworld.

History

Once a war like species the Gheljiar united the people of Luria thousands of years ago and became the rulers of the Lurian race. Since then there has been peace for the most part with very few incidents of civil unrest or conflict.

They prospered and grew, developing technology and eventually making the leap into space. Even after this fewer than 5% of their species has ever left their homeworld.

Government

The Lurian government is controlled by the Royal Family of Luria which are called the Gheljiar. The Gheljiar united the people of Luria thousands of years ago and became the rulers of the Lurian race.

Description

The average Lurian was approximately the same height as the average Human (perhaps a few centimeters taller), but have a much broader and heavier body. Lurians were grayish- or tan-skinned beings descended from mammals. Their most noteworthy feature was their narrow, elongated heads. They had wide mouths, puggish noses, and small, deep-set eyes. Most Lurians seem to have hair, except for Morn, who has gone bald.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Lurians were known to have multiple hearts, four lungs at the minimum, and two stomachs. As a result, they were not only more resistant to damage than most species, but were also able to withstand poisons and other toxins much better. They were able to store liquids in their second stomach for many years, if necessary.

Psychology

While many of them seem to be quiet, non-aggressive by nature they also as a species tend to prefer not to leave their homeworld. They seem to handle stress very well and are not easy to startle or quick to jump to emotional outbursts.

Data would seem to indicate that they have very few mental health issues and a lot of time and effort is expended to try and treat those few members of their society that do suffer from any form or kind of mental health issues.

Religion

They have a strong belief in the afterlife, with the essence of an individual moving onto a different plane or reality. One where they life a peaceful and joyous life but still require food, drink, sleep and other comforts to make eternity enjoyable.

Mythology

While they do have a diverse collection of ancient stories the majority of these take the form of fables as they all seem to have a lesson to teach.

Society

As a people they seem to be orderly, calm and hard working. Their communities are neat, clean and well maintained. They seem to have a well-developed infrastructure that is capable of providing all of the essential needs to most if not all of their population. There are plenty of recreational, medical and educational facilities that provides services to the majority of their population as needed.

Culture

Lurian folk music

Lurian folk music is a style of music which originated in Lurian culture. Carol Abramowitz became briefly enamored of Lurian folk music in 2376. Commander Sonya Gomez did not care for it, and for that reason, used the lyrics of a particular song as her uncrackable computer security passwords.

Customs

At least some Lurians prefer to sleep in a 'hot tub' of mud.

Lurian death ritual

It is a Lurian custom to bring gifts of food and drink for the deceased, so they would have something to sustain them in the afterlife.

Technology

For the most part they have developed at a consistent rate and have fairly good R & D facilities. Still they are noticeably behind most Federation member worlds.

Economy

They are fairly self-sufficient but do trade with a number of different worlds and species. Only a very small minority of their own people operate cargo vessels and transport goods from their world to others.

Military

They have a very small military force consisting of 5 vessels that could technically be considered to be heavy cruisers that patrol their system of space. For the most part they maintain a very strict policy of neutrality and do not take sides or participate in any way with other species conflicts.

Alternate timeline

In an alternate timeline in which Captain Benjamin Sisko was believed to have been killed in 2372, Morn attended the memorial service for him on the Promenade. He remained aboard DS9 after it fell under the control of the Klingon Empire in 2373. By 2405, Quark had bought a moon and sold Morn his bar. Morn was still running the bar in 2422. In that year, Julian Bashir suggested that he, Jadzia Dax, Jake Sisko and Nog go for a drink in Morn's if their plan to rescue Captain Sisko was successful.

Morn

Morn was a Lurian who was a frequent patron of Quark's and his best customer. He was said to be highly talkative, and enjoyed a wide variety of alcoholic beverages. Morn owned a shipping business that specialized in the transport of various mundane cargos.

Morn had seventeen brothers and sisters. Although he owned his own ship, Morn kept his quarters aboard Deep Space 9. His quarters were exceptionally spartan, containing a 'hot tub' of mud, where he slept, and a painting of a matador. He also enjoyed playing dabo, but couldn't get the hang of darts. He and Worf frequently sparred, having weekly combat sessions in the holosuite. Worf thought that he was an excellent sparring partner.

Morn was quite the ladies' man, and was often seen with a beautiful woman by his side. Morn once asked out Starfleet officer Jadzia Dax, who declined. She did say she thought he was cute, and, prior to 2372 later admitted that she used to have a little crush on him. As she explained it, however, he wasn't interested. Morn was also attracted to several other females aboard the station and was frequently seen flirting with some such as a Bajoran woman who received a hand kiss from him as well as a female Kobheerian.

In 2374, a funeral service for the Lurian Morn was held in Quark's Bar aboard Deep Space 9. The event was premature as his supposed death in an ion storm was revealed to be a hoax.

Lurian Security

Lurian Security was the police force of the government of Luria.

Lissepian Mother's Day Heist conspirator Hain claimed to be an agent of Lurian Security when he attempted to arrest Quark as part of his scheme to find the proceeds of the heist, which had been hidden by Morn.

Lissepian Mother's Day Heist

Morn was one of five thieves who stole 1,000 bricks of gold-pressed latinum from the Central Bank of Lissepia in the Lissepian Mother's Day Heist of 2365. Morn somehow extracted the latinum from the bricks, then deposited the gold in the Bank of Bolias and stored the liquid latinum in his second stomach, causing most of his hair to fall out.

Bank of Luria

The Bank of Luria is a Lurian financial institution based on Luria. In 2383, an Andorian associate of Sela provided Denison Morad with access to a Bank of Luria account to assist the True Way's operations.

Gheljiar

The Gheljiar were the royal family of the Lurian species. The Gheljiar united the people of Luria thousands of years ago and became the rulers of the Lurian race. In 2374, Hain posed as a member of Lurian Security and told Quark that Morn was the crown prince of the Royal Family of Luria, hoping to misappropriate latinum that Quark had inherited from Morn by claiming it was Lurian property.

Ra'Chet'Ka

Ra'Chet'Ka was a male Lurian who lived in the 24th century. He was a freighter captain and had several minor shipping offences to his name.

In 2375, Ra'Chet'Ka commanded the Lurian freighter NRX-01772 on a mission to smuggle Cardassian dissidents out of the Dominion controlled Cardassian Union. Ra'Chet'Ka and his crew were killed when the freighter exploded.

Arisa

Arisa was a female Lurian who worked for Quark. In 2378, Arisa piloted a Ferengi shuttle, with James T. Kirk and Jean-Luc Picard aboard, to Bajor. Quark had told Kirk that Arisa was a commercial pilot, although Picard knew the only female employees that Quark had sold drinks and worked dabo tables. Picard hoped that Arisa was not a relation of Morn.

Luria

The Lurians are a humanoid species from the planet, Luria, located in the Ionite Nebula region. Although rarely seen away from their homeworld, some Lurians have moved out into the galaxy to live out their lives. Luria was a neutral planet during the Dominion War.

Just For Your Knowledge

Along with Quark, Q, and Evek, Morn is one of only four characters to appear in all three Star Trek series based in the 24th century: Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

The name Morn is a play on words and a tribute to the barfly character of Norm on the TV show Cheers. Morn has appeared on 93 different episodes but has never spoken a single word. At one point they considered having Morn speak the very last words spoken for Deep Space Nine but changed their minds and gave that honor to Quark.
