Lumm was born on the Deltan homeworld in 2376. Like most Deltans she has a very large and very close extended family, which didn't entirely approved of her career choice when she decided to join Starfleet.

She had always been a very curious and very social child growing up and from a very early age she was already looking towards the stars. She was fascinated by all the different cultures and species that were part of the Federation, however, due to the Deltans' natural characteristics, her contact with these was fairly restricted at first.

In 2392, however, at the age of sixteen, Lumm's golden opportunity had arrived, as she had been selected for a Federation cultural exchange program that would take her to spend six months each first on Andoria and then on Earth.

Despite protests from her family, her parents decided to allow her to go and have such a unique experience. Despite the obvious challenges that arose from being "disconnected" from her peers, Lumm was completely mesmerized by the experience, and during this time she made the decision to work towards joining Starfleet.

She was able to enter Starfleet Academy on her third attempt, moving to the Academy campus on Earth in 2395, where she chose to pursue the Helm/Navigation track after proving to be very adept at astrogation from early on, with a natural talent to mathematics and astrophysics.

During her last year, however, Lumm found herself in danger of being discharged from Starfleet, after an incident involving another cadet with whom Lumm found herself becoming close with. While she was cleared of any wrongdoing and it was eventually found that she had indeed remained true to her Oath, the incident has profoundly affected her psychologically.
