"The Borg came and out world died in flames. Lost beyond recovery our past must make way for our future or all will have been lost."
a Lorillian lament.
The Lorillian are a species of humanoids whose homeworld has been destroyed by the Borg Collective. Fortunately since they became early members of the Federation a significant portion of their population were living in colonies or on other worlds when this disaster occurred. As a result almost a quarter of their total population survived.

History

In the mid-22nd century, the Lorillians were an independent species conducting trade in the Kandari sector. They had been inside the Vulcan sphere of influence for some time prior to the founding of the Federation. The Klingon Empire considered them former jeghpu'wI', or clients, of the Confederacy of Vulcan which made it only natural for them to eventually join the Federation.

In April 2151, first contact between Lorillians and Humans occurred when the Earth starship Enterprise (NX-01) visited Rigel X. Commander Charles Tucker and Sub-Commander T’Pol encountered a pair of Lorillians, a mother and her child on Rigel X. Tucker was shocked to see the child having breathing difficulties, and thought the mother was suffocating her child, until T'Pol gave him some insight into what the mother was doing for her child.

On November 1st, 2162, Federation President Thomas Vanderbilt was concerned with how the Lorillians, Denobulans and Arkenites would react to the fact that Federation transporter technology was unsafe for long term usage. Vanderbilt had hoped to advertise the technology as a means to entice the Lorillians into joining the Federation.

On October 19th, 2163, the Klingon privateer Sud Qav raided a Lorillian freighter in the Kandari sector. When the Starfleet vessel USS Pioneer arrived at the scene to lend aid, the Klingons had already left. Fortunately, the USS Pioneer was able to save four survivors. At this time, the Lorillians were trading and talking with the Federation but had not yet formally aligned with them.

By February 19th, 2164, the Lorillians and theAxanar were pressuring the Rigelian Trade Commission to enact security and anti-piracy laws, or even to join the Federation to gain Starfleet protection in the Kandari sector.

The Lorillians were a species the Klingon Empire dealt with, through Ambassador Kage, at some point prior to 2311.

During the Borg Invasion of 2381, Lorillia was one of many worlds devastated by the Borg Collective in an attempt to exterminate the Federation.

Government

They no longer have any government and the two colonies that they had established in other areas of the Federation have both developed their own unique style of self-government since the destruction of their homeworld.

Description

Lorillians were distinguishable from Humans by a vertical cleft between their brows, subtle nuances in body languages and scent. Other than that they can be as varied in size, shape and body type just like humans. This includes hair and eye colors.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

There is one very unusual aspect of their development. They can only breathe methyl oxide before the age of four. Once the child reaches that age the mother has to gradually wean her child off methyl oxide and onto oxygen. Methyl oxide is a colorless gas. In order to wean the child off methyl oxide the mother would need to repeatedly remove and reattach a breathing mask in a class M environment.

Lorillians are also able to breathe methylacetylene in the absence of oxygen.

Psychology

They seem to be fairly similar in this regards to most other intelligent species, although a large number of the survivors did suffer through a number of mental issues following the destruction of their homeworld by the Borg including a surprising number of suicides and mental breakdowns.

Religion

Since the destruction of their homeworld over half of their remaining population have abandoned their traditional beliefs and have either assimilated those belonging to the various species that they now live among or have completely given up on any beliefs.

Those that still retain their traditional beliefs believe that a divine being, the Great Preserver brought them to their world.

Mythology

While much of it does remain, files safely stored with in various different data storage devices on a number of different worlds most of their surviving population has lost any interest in these diverse and sometimes complex fables, myths and tales.

Society

Lorillians lived in families. Freighter crews were members of a family, similar to Human space boomers. Lorillian families included parents, children and cousins. A mother regarded the father of her child as her "breeding partner."

Since the destruction of their homeworld they have undergone a massive social change as their old way of life is slowly being replaced by the newly developing one on each of their two colonies or they continue to progress further towards being fully integrated into the various different societies on numerous different worlds.

Culture

As with most intelligent species they had a well-developed and extensive collection of indigenous art, music and creative artistic means of expression although they have long been known best for their incredible sculptures. Unfortunately with the destruction of their homeworld most of this was lost. Only their music and those pieces of art that had been shipped off world prior to the arrival of the Borg survived.

Sculptures

Many famous Lorillian artists have managed to establish their skills and mastery of this art medium. As a result their work is in high demand and has been exported to almost every corner of the Federation and beyond.

With the destruction of their homeworld these works of art have increased in value, especially as most of their best artists and the schools that developed new talent were destroyed.

Both colonies are attempting to re-establish a flourishing trade in sculptures but so far their efforts have met with less than glorious reviews.

Customs

With the destruction of their homeworld those surviving members of their species have continued either the gradual assimilation into the societies of the worlds they now live on, this would include some of their customs as well or in regards to their two colonies the development of new customs that better reflect the developing society and cultures of those colonies.

Technology

The Lorillians attained warp-capability at some point before the 2150s. They were within the Confederacy of Vulcan sphere of influence and were subsequently influenced by the Vulcans. They did not have transporter technology, which was one of the incentives for joining the Federation.

In the mid-22nd century, the Lorillians operated freighters armed with low-yield particle cannons.

Since the destruction of their homeworld they have become even more assimilated into the very fabric of the Federation as a whole and even their colonies are considered to be on an equal footing with the rest of the Federation when it comes to technology.

Economy

Lorillian freighter

While some have been maintained and even upgraded they are still considered to be outdated and in many cases antiquated. Coming into service in the 2160’s it normally had a crew of 14 and was armed with low yield particle cannons. They were used to carry refined metals like duranium in the Kandari sector, between Beta Rigel and the Xarantine trade colony on Zeta Fornacis VI.

Following their joining the Federation they slowly switched to using vessels designed and built by other species and since the destruction of their homeworld only the two remaining colonies seem to have any significant number of freighters of any kind that they would call theirs.

Military

They never had or maintained any form of military, however since they were early members of the Federation there have been many of their species who have chosen to serve in Starfleet, especially since the destruction of their homeworld by the Borg. In comparison very few ever join the Marines.

Federation Intelligence Files

Until 2154, Lorillia lay in the vicinity of the Delphic Expanse.

Lorillia is a planet in the Gamma Leporis star system in the Beta Quadrant and the homeworld of the warp-capable Lorillian civilization.

The young Federation courted Lorillia for membership in the 2160s and by 2381 in the 24th century, Lorillia was a member of the United Federation of Planets.

The Klingons considered the Lorillians a "weakling race" and regarded them as former jeghpu'wI' of the Vulcans.

During the Borg Invasion of 2381, Lorillia was one of many worlds attacked and destroyed by the Borg Collective in an attempt to exterminate the Federation.

Mon mentioned that he had met Lenkit through his fine art dealings, Lenkit having bought a Lorillian sculpture from Mon several years before her death.

Dashec

Dashec was a female Lorillian with sandy hair. In the mid-22nd century, Dashec and her family lived on a Lorillian freighter. In the 2160s, Dashec was middle-aged.

In 2163, Dashec was the chief engineer of a freighter following trade routes in the Kandari sector. On October 19, Dashec's freighter was pillaged by the Klingon privateer Sud Qav. Of a crew of fourteen, there were only four survivors, most of them members of Dashec's engineering staff. These included her breeding partner, her adolescent daughter and a cousin.

After they were rescued by the Federation UESPA starship USS Pioneer and received medical treatment from Doctor Therese Liao, Dashec wanted Captain Malcolm Reed to pursue the Klingons. However, the Kandari sector was outside of Federation jurisdiction, and the Pioneer dropped off the survivors in a safe location.
