"Sure I will transport that for you. Anything for a profit."
a Lissepian proverb.
The Lissepian are a species of traders, ones with few morals and inclined to buy, sell, trade and transport any cargo if there is enough latnium in it to offset the risks.

History

In the 2350s, the Ferengi had a trade route that began at Lissepia and ended at New Sydney, passing through the Bajor-B'hava'el system. DaiMon Gart often docked at Terok Nor when traveling the route.

In 2365, while the entire planet of Lissepia was celebrating Mother's Day, five thieves broke into the Central Bank of Lissepia and stole one thousand bricks of gold-pressed latinum in what became known as the Lissepian Mother's Day Heist. Morn was one of five thieves who stole the thousand bricks, later depositing the gold in the Bank of Bolias and hiding the latinum in his second stomach. After the statute of limitations ran out in 2374, Morn faked his own death to throw his partners off his trail.

In 2366, the Cardassian prison transport Ravinok was scheduled to rendezvous with another freighter, which would take Tora Naprem and Tora Ziyal to Lissepia to live out their lives in peace. The Cardassian transport, however, was attacked by two Breen warships and forced to crash land on Dozaria, where the survivors remained until 2372.

In 2370, while traveling to Cardassia IV, Chief Miles O’Brian and Major Kira Nerys successfully bluffed their way into Cardassian space by disguising their runabout Rio Grande as the Lissepian transport Martuk. They were scanned by a Cardassian navigational control post, which recognized that the ship's subspace field emitters were malfunctioning and offered assistance. In fear of getting caught, Major Kira quickly covered with the explanation that they were hauling a shipment of high-priority rulot seeds to Gul Marayn on Cardassia IV, and at the risk of ruining the crops they would deny help and make the repairs following their delivery.

In 2371, the USS Mekong responded to a distress call made by a Lissepian supply ship that was under attack by a Maquis interceptor.

In 2372, Quark purchased a program from a Lissepian that allowed him to run holographic waiters in his bar while Rom and the rest of his wait staff were on strike. Unfortunately, the Lissepian neglected to inform Quark that certain energy sources could interfere with the imaging system.

In 2374, the freighter Ariadne was on course for Lissepia from Yridia when it had to detour to Deep Space 9.

Government

Communities are controlled by the richest individual in the city who acts as a kind of CEO for the community. When it comes to the planet, a council of the 30 richest men on the planet all hold seats, and jockey for power amongst themselves while governing the planet.

Description

Characteristically they tend to be burly with yellow/green skin. Lissepians also have a large aft lobe of the brain with an aft ridge vaguely reminiscent of Dopterians. For this reason, Lissepians are perhaps brethren to the Dopterians, the Kohberrians and to the unspecified Kolos race. They can also be distinguished by finger-like projections from their chins.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

Psychology

They can be very stubborn, determined and strangely enough even though they have no problem smuggling or transporting illegal or contraband goods they will honor any and every deal they make. They pay their bills, generally keep their word and for this have earned a well-deserved reputation for fair dealing.

As with any intelligent sentient species, a percentage of their population does suffer from a variety of mental health issues. These seem to plague their elderly more so than the rest of the population.

Religion

Lissepian prayer bead

A Lissepian prayer bead is a religious item used by the Lissepians. In the year 2374, a Bajoran vedek purchased several Lissepian prayer beads at an auction being run by Quark on Deep Space 9.

Mythology

There does not seem to be any recorded data to support the possibility that they may have had or ever developed any myths, legends or fables.

Society

They have a very competitive merchant style society, one where hard work and a willingness to conduct business with anyone is the bases for all of their contact with other species or even interaction among their own kind.

The rich can afford the best of the best and the poor, make due with whatever they can manage to scrounge.

Culture

The Lissepians were celebrated artisans, known to carve Hupyrian beetle snuff boxes from snailosaurus bone.

Customs

Just like the Ferengi, many of their customs revolve around their need to be successful, get rich and run a successful business.

Technology

Thanks to their extensive trade network and their very flexible morals when it comes to business deals they often acquire new technology in return for services rendered. So far this has allowed them to remain fairly competitive with most other species.

Economy

During the 24th century, the Lissepians were active trade partners with the Cardassians, because they were noted for always paying their bills. Lissepians were often used as intermediaries between the Cardassians and their colonies in the Demilitarized Zone following its creation in 2370. The Lissepians, however, were caught more often than their fellow Cardassian intermediaries, the Xepolites.

Ulanov spice

Ulanov spices were a variety of spices grown from plant lifeforms cultivated on the farming colony Gault. They were a popular food export, especially favored by the Lissepians.

Lissepian honeycomb

A Lissepian honeycomb is a type of foodstuff, a sort of honey delicacy originating from planet Lissepia and enjoyed by the Lissepian civilization.

In the year 2377, Savonigar ate a field ration which contained a Lissepian honeycomb.

Lissepian planet-hopper

A Lissepian planet-hopper is a small starship used by interstellar Lissepian travelers. It is approximately the same size as a Starfleet Danube-class runabout.

When the USS Seine visited the planet Thalezra in 2381, they altered their shields to appear to sensors as a Lissepian planet-hopper, rather than a Federation vessel.

Lissepian transport

Major Kira Nerys's modified runabout presented itself as the Lissepian transport Martuk on a covert mission to the planet Cardassia IV to rescue Li Nalas in 2370.

Lissepian cargo ship

In 2369 Nog and Jake Sisko made business with a Lissepian captain who was in command of a Lissepian cargo ship.

Lissepian supply ship

Such a ship was attacked by a Peregrine-class Maquis vessel in 2371, though the Maquis ship was in fact piloted by the Female Changeling. The distress signal from the Lissepian ship was answered by a runabout from Deep Spcae 9, piloted by Odo and Major Kira, so the Maquis ship broke off its attack.

Military

They have never had any military but most of their merchant ships are armed. Thanks to their strict policy of neutrality and being willing to transport just about anything for anyone they have never needed a military either.

Federation Intelligence Files

The Lissepians were a humanoid species native to Lissepia, and were frequent visitors to Deep Space 9.

A famous humanoid race of traders from Cardassian space, Lissepians trade in anything legal (usually) of any value, including holographic equipment, building equipment, and foodstuffs.

Kage dealt with Lissepians on behalf of the Klingon Empire prior to 2311.

Mazagalanthi

Mazagalanthi was a male Lissepian who lived in the 24th century. Following his escape from the Letau prison facility, he became one of Iliana Ghemor's lieutenants, although he believed his leader was Kira Nerys.

Mazagalanthi operated as a smuggler and specialized in the trafficking of classified technology. He was later imprisoned by the Cardassians on Letau. In 2375, the Letau facility was damaged after a Romulan starship was forced down by the Jem'Hadar, allowing Mazagalanthi and other prisoners to escape their cells. Mazagalanthi and Fellen Ni-Yaleii fought their way from the cells and encountered Iliana Ghemor, Shing-kur and Telal. Mazagalanthi later worked on a Dominion transporter which the group used to transport to Harkoum.

In 2377, Mazagalanthi, Shing-kur, Fellen and Telal were captured by the crew of the USS Defiant on Harkoum and brought to Deep Space 9 for interrogation. After Mazagalanthi learned that "Kira" was actually Iliana Ghemor, he planned to make a deal with Cenn Desca. He never got the opportunity to do so, as Shing-kur activated an implant in his brain that released a neurotoxin that killed him in seconds.

The Lissepian Mazagalanthi worked for Iliana Ghemor between 2375 and 2377.

Mechter

Mechter was a 24th century Lissepian individual who worked as a trader. Mechter's starship traveled with a cargo bay full of latinum in the year 2374.

A Lissepian trader Mechter was stranded on DS9 in 2374.

Lissepian Mother's Day Heist

The Lissepian Mother's Day Heist was a notorious robbery that occurred in 2365 during the Mother's Day festivities on the planet Lissepia. A number of thieves were able to steal 1,000 bricks of gold-pressed latinum from the Central Bank and escape off-world.

In 2374, Hain, Larell, Krit, and Nahsk were arrested for assault with intent to kill after fighting over the spoils in a Deep Space 9 cargo bay, but the stolen latinum was not recovered. This was because a fifth conspirator, Morn, had hidden the liquid latinum in his second stomach until the statute of limitations had expired. Morn thereby became the owner of the stolen latinum, and was not prosecuted for any crime.

Lissepian Lottery

The Lissepian Lottery was a game of chance with a jackpot of 1,000 bricks of gold-pressed latinum. It took place on Lissepia.

Before finding out the truth, Quark told others that Morn had won his large amount of latinum in the Lissepian Lottery. In fact, Morn had stolen the latinum as part of the Lissepian Mother's Day Heist conspiracy.

Gariff Lucsly considered it necessary to contain information about time travel so people did not attempt to slingshot around stars in order to win the Lissepian Lottery or fix bad relationships.
