Background

Lilly studied psychiatry at University before enrolling in Starfleet straight after she graduated, as was the tradition in her family. After the Academy she served as ships counsellor aboard the USS Yamaguchi, until it was destroyed by the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359. Badly wounded, she was dragged to the escape pods by one of the ships Security personnel. One of the fortunate ones to escape the clutches of the Borg, she returned to Earth for recovery.

Whilst recovering and waiting for re-assingment she sought out her saviour, Lieutenant Charles Thorne, and the two fell for each other. Neither wanted to leave Starfleet so they began a long-distance relationship, until Charles had his own brush with death when his ship was destroyed during the Dominion War. After that they promised each other that if they survived the war then they would both leave Starfleet and live out their lives together, in peace.

They both retired from Starfleet in 2375. Lilly carried on her work as a psychiatrist in a civilian practice, whilst Charles followed his childhood dream to run a bar. The couple had 23 wonderful years of peace together, before Charles passed away at the age of 84 after a short illness. After a period of grieving Lilly realised Charles would want her to live her life so, looking for opportunities to go out into the Universe and help people, she turned back to Starfleet. Now too old to rejoin as an officer she requested a position as a civilian and, due to her previous service and decades of experience, was invited to join the Federations exploration of Ring 42.
