Backstory

Allen Kress Was born on a colony planet founded during the early days of human space exploration. Around the time the earth was being unified under one government, however, it was one of the places criminals and unsavory characters fled to, mostly to the larger cities. A few areas still have a kind of lawless feel to them like in modern day Columbia, but most are fairly peaceful. The planet has lower gravity than Earth, so his height is about average there.

His father worked on an orbital factory that produced nanoelectronics. His mother was a college English professor. He spent his childhood in a small town. He spent a lot of time with a family friend who his dad met at work, Dean Moore, who has since quit and sold a design for an advanced quantum photonic computer chip. He is now basically set for life, and spends most of his time tinkering. He first got Allen interested in engineering.

In school, Allen got a mixture of good and bad grades, doing well in math, science and Vulcan (which they offered as a foreign language class) and poorly in English (mostly because he constantly argued with the teacher) and history.

He joined Starfleet after several colleges rejected him because of his several low grades. He planned on getting a post planet side in R&D or on a starbase, then quitting after the minimum time, just for the free training, but during training he discovered he loved the challenges of working on a starship. During training, he also built his own computer in his spare time because they wouldn't let him install the AMPOS interface on anything networked with a Starfleet system.
