Background
Kiliak Jo was the youngest of four children born to a mechanic and a clerk in the Vedek Assembly on Bajor XI. The family was forced to flee after the occupation of Bajor by the Cardassians commenced. Along with members of their extended family, the Kiliaks escaped while it was still possible and resettled on a quiet moon colony in another system. Although Kiliak was mostly raised elsewhere, like many of the refugees who later returned, she always considered Bajor to be her home.
Unfortunately for the Kiliak family, zealous Cardassians clans expanded their holdings during the Dominion War and took control of the moon colony. Kiliak Jo's eldest brother, Prao, was killed after he joined an underground resistance movement. Jo also wished to join, but her parents strictly forbade it, stressing that the family must not be put at risk. Nevertheless, Jo began to participate in the operation of a comm relay station for resistance efforts and later in maintenance and arms improvisation. As she became increasingly involved, even participating in strikes, her sister discovered her involvement and revealed her to authorities out of fear. The family was spared in return, however Jo was captured and spent two years in a Cardassian prison before the colony was liberated.
Jo traces her lineage to the early interstellar Bajoran explorers from seven centuries ago. This spark of interest in space exploration, along with her liberation late in the Dominion War (which she credits to Federation efforts), combined into a strong interest in joining Starfleet. Unfortunately, due to her imprisonment and classification as a terrorist, her application was denied and appealed and delayed over a period of several years. During this time, she worked in engineering positions aboard a series of Bajoran freighters, using skills she had gained from her father and developed as a resistor. She remains close with her father, and her living brother, who has returned to Bajor and operates a farm. She no longer speaks with the sister who betrayed her.
Jo remains religious, in her own way, and still wears a traditional earring. Considered exemplary in her skill at devising "jerry-rig" solutions by her peers, she nevertheless struggled to compete with the numerous gifted individuals within Starfleet Academy. Her marks were only satisfactory at first, but a strong demand for innovative engineers pushed educators to assist her in graduating and receiving starship placement. Jo abhors to see violence employed needlessly but recognizes that at times, the events of the day demand it. She has a strong sense of justice and can display flashes of temper, or anxiety. However, her classmates often described her as quiet and unassuming.
Upon graduation, she was assigned to the USS Atlantis in the Par'tha Expanse. Since coming aboard, some notable events include being kidnapped by a Romulan splinter faction called N'Ventnar, being forced to irradiate the entire Engineering Bay to save a life, discovering an ancient alien AI hidden deep in the Jenatris nebula, and being falsely tried as a Federation traitor (fully acquitted). She also once saved a falling space station from crashing into a planet through the use of high explosives. Her ring finger was lost in an accident and she now wears a mechanical prosthetic. Kiliak Jo cannot make use of transporter systems, due to Kelbonite isotypes fused to her physiology. She is a Warp XV enthusiast, and has become a leading researcher on the technology. She received temporary assignment as Executive Officer aboard the USS Juneau.
