Kelham hails from South Yorkshire, England, Earth. His family can trace their lineage back through five centuries to the time of Horatio Nelson, when Brittania ruled the waves. Despite owning land virtually in the centre of the British Isles, the Kelham's have traditionally had a close association with the navy. Records show that there was a Kelham present at the Battles of Trafalgar and Jutland, at the sinking of the Bismark and during the Falklands conflict. When the wet navy gave way to star ships, the Kelham's naturally followed and members of every generation of the family have served in Starfleet since that organisation was formed.

Nelson Kelham is a typically representative of his kin. He originally enlisted as a crewman and worked his way up to a commission. Since then he has continued to progress up the ranks to his current position. Although now getting on in years, few people are as skilled or as knowledgeable.

A career officer through-and-through, Nelson is well versed in Starfleet regulations and can be very formal when needed, although he prefers a much more familiar, relaxed attitude causing a contradiction which some of his previous commanding officers have found infuriating.
