Karl is hardworking and professional when on duty but has a dark sense of humor, he also uses this as a coping mechanism. He still had insecurities about his early life, education, and failed academy exam. All contributing to a temper, which he has worked hard to control.

Born to parents that considered himself and his older sister to be an inconvenience, Karl and Sofia were adopted by their paternal aunt and her husband at the ages of 8 and 10. From this point on Karl had a happy home life but struggled in education until he graduated high school as his reading and writing skills were subpar. Karl did well in sports and considers them to be a highlight of his education, but never excelled to be one of the best in his school. His early childhood and difficulties in education left him with resentment and anger issues that he needed to recognize, if not yet fully overcome, as an adult.

At the age of twenty, Karl applied to Starfleet Academy and was rejected after failing the entrance exam. Unsure of what to do with himself but drawn to space and travel, Karl signed on with a freighter crew as part of a 24-month rating apprentice program. Here Karl improved on his academic skills and gained the foundation of his engineering knowledge. He served on three merchant freighters until the age of twenty-seven, when he applied for Starfleet academy for a second time. This time Karl passed the entrance exam and was accepted, joining at twenty-eight.

While he always worked extremely hard at the academy, Karl was normally in the bottom half of his class for tests, twice having to redo failed classes during his leave time. While at the academy he spent his free time on sports & martial arts teams, again finding success but never being one of the best. In the Academy third-year wrestling tournament, Karl won his first two matches before losing his third. In the fourth year, Karl made it into the semi-finals taking home a bronze medal. He had two short relationships at the academy, both between semesters and ending amicably.

Karl got a tattoo spider on his upper left arm after a drunk night out between the second and third years of the academy. The image is in a cartoon style and the spider is holding two hand phasers. Karl has considered getting it removed a number of times but has kept it because it privately makes him chuckle at how stupid he is and it is easily concealed.
