History
Unlike the typical widespread populations of other worlds, Kanarians became joined under one leader very early in their history. This planet wide unification resulted in a blending of traditions and beliefs that, thousands of years later, resulted in one of the very few documented mono-cultural planets within the Federation.
Although originally governed somewhat like a hereditary monarchy, Kanarian leaders eventually became elected for life so long as Kings and Queens did not bear children.
These somewhat harsh rules were most likely an attempt to suppress dynastic governorship of the planet. Although they remained effective for over two thousand years, democratic ideals eventually took over the process completely when Kanaria's last King resigned from office and established the Forum of Intellectuals.
The Forum continues to govern the planet today, over 700 years after its foundation. Kanaria first achieved warp drive in 1933. The new form of propulsion didn’t’ take the ship very far, but the achievement was monumental. Within thirty years, the planet had constructed and successfully tested four more warp capable vessels, each one traveling farther from the homeworld.
The Evoran system was one of the first alien systems to be reached in 1968 and it was studied at close range by the Kanarians. Although the Evorans were still hundreds of years from warp travel, the Kanarian scientists were able to distinguish their artificial structures from space, confirming intelligent life outside Kanaria. Upon receipt of the discovery, the Forum of Intellectuals passed a popular movement to limit space travel.
The Kanarians were worried that a militaristic power would easily overcome the new, and therefore primitive, technology of their world if it were to become aware of the planet. As a result in 1972 scientists across all three continents devoted their efforts to the construction of a planetary defense system and just over fifty years later in 2024 they completed construction. After which warp travel was once again viewed as an opportunity for growth.
Due to its somewhat secluded position away from major warp capable powers of the time, Kanaria did not make first contact until it received a transmission from the Andorians in 2098. By 2118 this contact had developed into a long term trade deal that is still in effect today.
Over time they established favourable contact with a number of other species as well. This eventually led to their applying for admission into the Federation in 2236. In order to gain membership they were required to alter some of the punishments that they used in criminal judgements as they were considered to be to excessive for the crime. As a result they did not gain entry into the Federation until 2259.
Since then they had been solid participants in most scientific endeavours and have supplied many scientists to work at various research facilities, educational institutes and project test sites. One of their best scientists was a member of the Genesis project.
Government
The Forum of Intellectuals is the primary governing body on Kanaria. Each continent elects 4 representatives to the Forum for 3 year terms. The Forum is also the highest judicial body on the planet, not counting the courts of the Federation. They meet in the Dome of the Three Moons, a large domed building located in the exact center of the Kanaria’ capital city of Sentive.
Prior to their being accepted into the Federation the 12 total members were responsible for writing, reviewing, and revising the planet’ laws in accordance with the laws of the United Federation of Planets and the wishes of the Kanarian people.
Description
While any species has physical variations, the Kanarians’ small historical population has led them to display an almost uniform appearance since most recessive traits have disappeared over the course of their evolutionary process.
Kanarians have two genders and, at a planetary average of 6'3" in height, they are taller than the average humanoid. Their population displays a small variety of skin pigmentation, ranging from peach to orange. Among their uniform characteristics are violet eyes, hairless faces (both genders), and lack of eyebrows. In place of eyebrows, Kanarians have a thin layer of cartilage just below the skin of their foreheads. This ridge traces a path similar to eyebrows above the eye, though its shape can vary from one individual to another.
While all Kanarians have dark hair on their heads, this appears to be a recessive trait among hybrids, as it is common for mixed Kanarians to exhibit the hair color of their non-Kanarian parent. Males also display a dark layer of chest hair on their bodies.
Physiology
As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. Their universal health care system is excellent, with everyone getting the best care available and many of their doctors have also received some training off world at any number of different Federation medical facilities and training programs.
Psychology
Like most intelligent humanoids they are susceptible to a number of minor mental illnesses and on rare occasions even some of the major ones. However they have an excellent mental health system and are easily able to deal with most of the minor issues.
Religion
Kanarians are a very spiritual people, but they have no belief in any deity. Their spirituality is closely linked to their planet and the universe as a whole. They believe that they share a symbiotic relationship with the natural forces of their environment.
Just as their world provides them with air, food, and water, they provide it with care and enhancements, such as improved irrigation to combat desertification, water filtration plants to eliminate pollution, and an almost complete dependence on renewable energies.
These enhancements rely heavily on new discoveries and continued education. Education has taken a somewhat spiritual role on the planet, and it remains a highly treasured aspect of the Kanarian lifestyle.
This intense belief can be witnessed as a result of individuals who drop out of school, as they are often times considered deviants and outcasts to society.
Mythology
A complete search of all their historical data has concluded that they have none and that they never developed any. It is not that they lack any degree of creativity but that those creative energies have always been directed into other more demanding fields of scientific, educational and ecological matters.
Society
Kanarians pride themselves on being a very "moral people." This single aspect of their culture has been criticized more than any other, not necessarily for their beliefs but for their deeply held conviction that their morals are supreme.
Kanarians hold firmly to the ideal that all living things must be treated with the utmost respect, unless respect is not reciprocated. This belief had originally led to extremely harsh punishments for individuals who were found guilty of crimes such as murder, abuse, or animal cruelty.
One of the changes required for Federation membership was the repeal of these punishments. Although Kanarians were not vegetarians prior to replicator technology, they still believed that animals needed to be given a good and healthy life before death. Likewise, trees and forests are rarely disturbed for building projects, resulting in a mixture of natural and artificial qualities in the Kanaria’ landscape.
Laws on the planet have almost always demonstrated complete equality for everyone, regardless of individual circumstances or characteristics. This belief had always been assumed to be the normal course of life. Only upon making contact and realizing that other cultures did not always hold to those beliefs did the Kanarians start perceiving their morals to be superior.
For the longest time their population had remained roughly at the same level but about 100 years ago it started to grow again by about 5 million every 10 years.
Culture
While they appreciate most forms of artistic expression it is not normally something that many of they consider worthy as a life occupation. As a result almost all of their artists and musicians are better described as hobbyists who dabble at their various different art forms in their spare time. This does not mean that they do not and have not had individuals who were exceptionally good at what they did, just that they never treated it as anything more than a relaxing hobby.
Customs
Romantic bonds on Kanaria are comprised of two extremes: Before marriage, monogamy is almost unheard of and completely unexpected. However, once a ceremony of marriage takes place, the couple is bound together “forever.” Separations are granted, but they are usually only due to extreme circumstances, such as the death of spouse (A divorce is still needed if someone wishes to remarry after losing a spouse because Kanarians believe that marriage transcends the physical world).
Technology
Many Federation sociologists find it difficult to connect the Kanarians' firm belief in preserving nature with their advances in artificial intelligence. But the connection exists more for logical reasons than cultural ideals. With a small planet wide population, Kanarians had a more dire need to replace certain jobs with machines than many other species. This necessity resulted in a very early Industrial Revolution. The very first machines on Kanaria were essentially just crop harvesters but the technology evolved enough to replace most individual farm laborers within 70 years.
The next mechanical breakthrough came in textile production. With fewer general laborers, people were able to focus more on the sciences, eventually resulting in computer production. The Kanarians’ long history of computer usage gave them an advantage in the field of artificial intelligence.
By the late 24th century, they had one of the most sophisticated artificial intelligence systems around, and parts of it were even incorporated into the computers of Starfleet vessels.
Economy
They established their first long term trade deal with the Andorians in 2118 and since then have been slowly developed a number of long term and short term trade deals that have enriched their economy and made it one of the strongest in its region of space.
Military
They have never had or needed any military forces but in 1972 they suspended space travel and devoted all of their scientific efforts and resources to developing and building a defensive system capable of protecting their homeworld.
It took them just over 50 years but in 2024 they completed construction of their new planetary defensive network. It was a massive system of defensive weapons platforms complete with shield technology and powered by anti-matter engines.
This system of 2,222 weapons platforms is constantly being upgraded and outfitted with the most advanced technology available. This includes the use of their best artificial intelligence system to control each and every weapons platform independently of each other.
Federation Intelligence Files
Geordi La Forge believed he'd spent most of his time at the A.I. conference on Risa in Kanarian seminars. This was actually a false memory implanted by the Romulans after they'd kidnapped him. However, Kanarians are known for having done the most work in artificial intelligence since 2367.
The Kanarians are non-aggressive humanoids who reside almost exclusively on their home planet of Kanaria (Quinlen in the native tongue). Kanaria itself is an M class planet with three moons near Sector 441. It is located 90 light years from Earth, and less than half a light year from the Risian system. Comprised of a vast ocean and a cluster of three continents, it is home to 890 million individuals. They never colonized other worlds, and even their three moons are largely undisturbed.
The Kanarians’ most significant contribution to the United Federation of Planets came through their advances in artificial intelligence. With a long planetary history of peace and their location deep within the heart of Federation territory, the Kanarians' primary focus of growth and expertise remains in the scientific fields.
