James grew up on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland. He was the son of Eamon Connelly, a member of the Federation Diplomatic Corps. Eamon died of tragic accident in one of his diplomatic missions of world accompanied by James' mother. Parent-less, James moved in with his uncle, Aiden Connelly, on the outskirts of Kilkenny, Ireland. His uncle was a local cargo pilot that loved shuttling goods and vacationers around. Most that knew James, believed that his uncle was his inspiration to fly and his father was his inspiration for the stars.

James did well in his school life, but did not want to go into enterprise or medicine. He went to a pilot's expo in Dublin and was recruited to an interstellar freighter company. This job, that he thought was perfect, took him to Bajor. There he flew goods to nearby colonies, Cardassia, and a few runs to DS9. James grew to love Bajor as much as he loved Ireland. He found it to be a fascinating world with a fascinating people and culture. After working with some Starfleet Officers as a private contractor, he became inspired to apply to Starfleet.
