Isabel Ponds parents met and lived on earth, even though both of them were Trill end neither of them was a member of Starfleet. They decided to move back to the Trill homeworld when the birth of their first child was imminent. Isabel dreamt very early of becoming a Starfleet officer, while her parents persuaded her to apply for a joining with a symbiont first. They were a bit disappointed when she decided against it, but were still supportive, especially after her younger brother proved to be a promising candidate for the procedure.
