Before joining the Earth Defense Force in the year 2164, Irina's childhood and adolescence were dominated by music.  Her grandfather Oskar Pavlov was concert master and first violin of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and had been for decades.  She also can trace her family tree back to famed Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky.
Irina started learning the violin at age 3, and by age 12 was first violin in the St. Petersburg Youth Symphony.  By age 14 she often joined her grandfather in the St. Petersburg Philharmonic for larger performances that required an augmented violin section.  Upon graduation from high school she was offered the prestigious second chair at both the St. Petersburg Philharmonic's first violin section and the same position at the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, where she'd been a guest soloist twice the previous year.  It was only a Romulan attack on an Earth colony in 2163, just three years after the end of the Earth-Romulan War, that prompted Irina to join the marines instead of the orchestra.
Despite her injuries and the passage of a great deal of time, Irina remains an excellent violinist, if no longer quite world-class.
