The crew of the Excalibur has been tasked by Starfleet Intelligence to go undercover on the planet Demes II to investigate a sudden advancement in their level of technology. Could there be an outside influence? Or is it a miraculous turn in their society?

Plot Summary

Admiral Ambrosius and Doctor Boeschg have come aboard the Excalibur to brief the crew on their coming mission, sans Doctor Adea and Commander Yalu who are being cast out by Starfleet Intelligence as a potential risk to the mission. The planet of Demes II is currently in an ice age of sorts but also experiencing a technological boom. Moving in a few short years from a technological level similar to Earth's 18th century to late 19th century. SFI believes there may be outside influences and considers this a possible threat to the Federation, but won't say how or why. Doctor Boeschg informed the crew that they would be split into three teams heading to three different areas of concern. Commander MacKenzie will lead Lieutenants Yellir, Sirin, and Dakora to the industrial town of Lakonna. Commander Niac will be leading Lieutenants Etan, Silveira, and Kuppasoop to the port town of Jupe. And Commodore Nicholotti will be leading Commander Jolara, Lieutenants Sherlock, Gnaxac, and Ensign Tiberius to the agricultural village of Yanthi.

The various teams begin to plan their individual missions and covers.

Once on Demes II, the teams seem to get a relatively restless first sleep before making their way out into the respective areas of operation. Commander MacKenzie's team making contact with Welne, a local journalist meanwhile, Commander Niac's team searches for work at the Jupe docks after meeting Fingus Lakar, a local barkeep. The team in Yanthi, led by Commodore Nicholotti, has made their way into the village square for food only to have their breakfast interrupted by a fight among the locals.

What we've learned

Note: Information in this section has been stated IC.
  • Not even on the map until five years ago, Jupe regular shipments from the region’s capital- sometimes as many as two dozen per standard week. It’s population has exploded from around fifty to almost eight hundred- and rising. But there are indications that the expansion came quickly and unexpectedly. There is little in the way of societal infrastructure: the local constabulary- for want of a better phrase- is poorly equipped, undermanned and believed to be ineffectual.
  • Smugglers have taken advantage of the lack of police and oversight and are running various rackets through the extensive warren of coastal caves that stretch for fifteen kilometres around the port. Hampering efforts to reign in these smugglers is the fact that most nights a thick and apparently impenetrable fog descends over the coast. Most ships that go out at night get lost and are never heard from again, except for the smugglers, who seem to have a way around this.
