Brilliant student, Sayre chose engineering as only challenging subject at the Academy. After finishing Academy he spent a year serving on the Starfleet vessels then returned to Academy for command school. At the end of it he was sent to a special mission with his command school mates when was caught by Orion Syndicate and held for a year before Starfleet Intelligence located him and sent rescue mission.

Upon return it was found that Sayre was tortured in many ways and his tongue was removed as a punishment. After a year of counseling, he was back on track with his work and his tongue was grown and attached, but Sayre is still not talking. Starfleet Medical believes that re-socialization by integration into a ship may help him.

The night of the launch, Admiral Holloway from Starfleet Medical brought him to Atlantis and almost literally dropped him to Wanda DyAmone in USS Atlantis Main Sickbay, explaining it with the fact that they are childhood friends and she will be able to help him, together with experienced Chief Engineer Eskyys. Wanda moved into Family quarters with him and promised to help him in every possible way.
