He does however have a picture of his childhood pet, Teddy (australian shepherd), by his bunk. Usually he keeps his domicile orderly and clean, as he is a slight perfectionist.

  • Physical Limitations: Strong and fit, Liam has never really suffered from physical limitations. However, he has found that his hands shake when holding a phaser. This is especially strange given his precision during surgery.
  • Temperment: Easy going and fairly talkative in private. However when on duty or in meetings Liam is quite serious and stoic, making it sometimes seem like he has two personalities.
  • Religion/Spiritual Devotion: None, altho believes wholeheartedly in the Hippocratic Oath.

Personality

Very friendly and outgoing, Liam is often known for his smile—if it is not on his lips, it is in his eyes. Extremely intelligent, Liam loves to discuss anything he can with people and his renowned for his bedside manner. Often described as outgoing and personable, he enjoyed a fair bit of popularity serving on the Academy Football (Soccer) Team. He is rarely quick to anger, but once something earns his ire, his personality seems to change quite rapidly. Friends have described it as "frightening" to see the over six foot welshman suddenly become imposing and towering in anger.

Liam takes his duties with the utmost seriousness. He turned down the opportunity to serve in Red Squadron, believing that it would distract from him form his courses. While his anger can be legendary, he is quick to forgive, and will do anything to assist those in need. A mortal enemy would be safe in Liam's care, that is until they have made a full recovery.

Ambitions and Goals

Liam wishes to advance his career in Starfleet in order to push the boundaries of medicinal knowledge and practical application. During his school and Academy days he was constantly hearing the exploits of the Enterprise doctors, and then that of Doctor Bashir, who was able to be the first Federation doctor to study medicine in the Gamma Quadrant. He holds the lofty goal of someday commanding his own ship.

In addition to career goals, has personal goals in advancing his own hobbies: fencing, which he excelled at during his Academy days, and to learn the cello. Only starting the string instrument in his last year at the Academy, he still feels quite amateur.

Personal Achievements and Disappointments

Liam could not have been prouder when he was accepted into Starfleet Medical. His first term as well was a huge success, seeing a 4.0 GPA, and beginning his interest in fencing. During his stay at the Academy, he managed to earn his position as the Captain of the football (soccer) Team, and enjoyed the popularity that brought.

However, despite his success he still blames himself for the death of his father, who died in a hunting accident.

  • Father: John Hughes deceased— Former Captain of The Fortune before meeting Patricia on Starbase 2. Gave the ship to his brother as a gift following his marriage. Currently buried on Earth next to the grave of Elizabeth Hughes.

Personal History

Liam does not remember much of his early childhood, he only truly knows that he spent his first eight years off world, only moving back after his father's death. He was an inquisitive youth (encouraged by his mother), and enjoyed school. Football (Soccer) was the first extracurricular activity he engaged in, and will often play famous matches in the holodeck when he has the free time. In his youth he was competitive, yet he understood the need to work with his team, rather than to take all the glory for himself.

A only child, Liam was primarily raised by his mother: Patricia Hughes. She became a single parent when John Hughes died during a hunting trip where his son was present. Patricia did her best raising Liam, taking him to Earth after his father's death. She never remarried or dated—at lest to Liam's knowledge. He would strongly encouraged her to do so later in life.

Patricia would encourage the young boy to read and study as much as he could, always having him research answers to his questions, and then report back what he had learned. This encouraged his love of studying and academic progress.

Liam has only one clear memory of his father, John Hughes. While living on a colony on the border of Klingon Space, John would often take Liam hunting, insisting that they bring home real meat once a month. Loving these outings with his father, they were quite successful until a misfire from Liam's phaser rifle caused a critical injury to his father. Liam watched helplessly as his father died in front of him. The official report surrounding John's death showed that the phaser misfire was a freak accident.

When Patricia and her son returned to earth, she a restaurant in San Francisco. She encouraged her son to enjoy their proximity to Star Fleet Headquarters, taking frequent tours and attending seminars that were available to civillians. This, and the words of his mother encouraged the young man to pursue a career in Star Fleet.

Admiral Simon Franks, who frequented his Mother's restaurant, would often take the young man to museums and other historical locations in the Sol system during his time off acting as a surrogate father. Liam often referred to the man as "Uncle Simon" in his youth, and now suspects that the Admiral was dating his mother. The man was so involved in Liam's life that Simon even provided Liam's letter of recommendation to the Academy.

In his youth on Earth, he would often ask his "Uncle" Simon to take him to Starbase 1, and look at the historical ships docked there at the Smithsonian's display. He obsessed over the history of these ships, and Simon often joked that Liam would one day end up commanding a ship of his own. However, Liam had other ideas.

Liam's intelligence caused him to quickly become bored with High School, and at 16 he tested out of his classes. Haunted by his feeling of helplessness with his father's death, and after witnessing the aftermath from the Battle of Sector 001, Liam chose to enter medical school. Needless to say, Simon was a little surprised when Liam went to medical school rather than applying directly to the Academy in order to attend Command Classes.

As soon as he was able, Liam applied to go to the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His test scores and application letter moved the school's board to admit the young man. By the young age of 22, he had completed the coursework for his MD, specializing in Neuroscience and Surgery. He submitted his Doctrate Thesis— a conclusive way to reverse the aging process brought on by Iverson's Disease.

Rather than take the many offers he had to join research teams, or positions within civilian hospitals, Liam applied for Star Fleet immediately after his graduation. After all, his dream was to explore as well as heal.

Relationships
Liam dated infrequently in High School, and had some casual relationships during his College & Academy years. None of his friendships lasted much through High School, and only a couple through the Academy. Between his athletic and academic obligations, he has let his personal life languish.
