Born into a Germanic family Jake cantrace his history back to the Great German ACE Erich Hartmann the most successful fighter pilot of the Second World War. He tries hard not to let anyone know of the connection.
His callsign PANDA was given to him on the USS Independence when he was flying Mauls. The call sign refers to the Terran creatures called Pandas. The callsign was given to him by sh'Shar an Andorian pilot he was somewhat involved with on the USS Independece. "sh'Shar: Panda. I reckon his callsign should be Panda. Slow as ^$&# and only mates once a year! Jake accepted the callsign with good grace and has kept it as a reminder of sh'Shar.
