Brief History

Life was tough on Gallentine, replicators were nearly non existant, and their use was generally restricted to the high ranking and important inhabitants. The Average lifespan of an inhabitant is 30 years under perfect conditions. Garret could happily say his early life was free of problems, but when he decided to move on with his life fate reared it's ugly head.
Jacob, his younger brother fell in with the gangers running wild on Gallentine, and the day Garret shipped off to Starfleet he got the news, his brother had been shot in a gang dispute and was killed, hopefully without much suffering. Garret put off mourning and focused on his studies, seeming to use them to build a wall between the real world and himself, his teachers and superiors gave him the name "Mr Smiles" sarcastically, as they never once saw him do so.
Several months into his studies he received the news, his parents had been died in a mining accident that had blow up most of the station, the remaining inhabitants were currently being evacuated and reintegrated to other planets. A year into his time at the academy he decided to take on a marine major and become a Starfleet Marine Corps officer. This new focus seemed to finally bring Garret back to life, he began talking to people again, made friends (and enemies) in the next few years. During his time at marine training he received high marks, especially during the leadership and hostage rescue courses, and upon graduation it was said that he actually smiled.
