"We fled our world seeking something better. Now we will defend what we have built. "
a Garidian proverb.
The Garidian are a species that wants to be allowed to live and develop on their own terms. They will use force to protect these ideals.

Just like the Chalchaj'qmey, Dabh'aelisu, Debrune, Rekarian, Reman and the Watraii they are considered to be a sub-species of the Romulans who are themselves considered to be a sub-species of the Vulcans.

History

Based on the limited data that has survived it would seem that the Garidians are a splinter faction that split off from the main group of exiles during the exodus from Vulcan that is now referred to as the Sundering. This was done shortly before the main group altered course and started to look for a suitable world to colonize, which they did, naming it Romulus.

The splinter faction had 5 ships and wandered for more than a year before their leader finally found a world that he felt would suit them. They landed all 5 ships and colonized the planet. It is now called Garid which was the name of their leader.

With time they slowly increased in numbers and expanded to cover the entire surface of their world. Science and technology advanced at a slow but steady pace. They lived in peace, content to expend their time in improving their quality of life and the improvement of their minds.

In 2243 they were contacted by a warship from the Romulan Star Empire. Peaceful relations were established followed by trade deals beneficial to both of them.

In 2291 the USS Redundant encountered one of their freighters while conducting a survey of unexplored systems. They were allowed to visit the Garidians system but only a small party were given permission to land. Data gathered by this team was used to establish the genetic link to Vulcan.

As of 2370, the Garidians were on such friendly terms with the Romulans, that they were sharing technology which included surplus Romulan starships as well as cloaking devices. Data would seem to indicate that they had been forced to become a satellite state of the Romulan Star Empire and had to do their bidding, without having the power to refuse.

With the destruction of the Hobus star all of this has changed. Since then it is obvious that while they continue to be on friendly terms with most of the surviving factions within what was once the Romulan Star Empire, they also refuse to take sides and have fought to retain their strictly neutral status.

Government

The Garidian Republic has a central government with an elected house of representatives. Only Patricians may be elected or vote on who may be elected to their government. The plebeian class has no say, vote of means by which to influence or bring grievances before their own government.

Description

Other than the fact that they all have white hair there is nothing about their appearance that does not match that of most Romulans or even that of most Vulcans.

Physiology

As with most intelligent humanoid species they have a very complex system with specialized organs, and unique hormones, chemicals and enzymes. They are typical humanoids with most of the physical, mental and biological medical problems that seem to plague most humanoids.

While there are some genetic differences between the Garidians and both Romulans and Vulcans it is obvious that they share a common genetic ancestry. It is believed that the environment of their world may have caused their genetic coding to change slightly resulting in all of them being born with white instead of black hair.

Psychology

The Garidians have earned a reputation as honorable warriors and do not usually resort to trickery. Also as expected of a people descended from the Vulcans they seem to have retained the keen minds and excellent mental health.

However they also suffer from the same mental ailments as well as something they call the Kinsoval which is caused by a tiny parasite native to their world that can enter their system and become lodged in their brain. It causes the victim to act in unusual ways and if not removed quickly enough may cause permanent damage to the brain.

Religion

The Patrician class enjoyed the benefits of a well-founded and complex spiritual system designed to ensure their superiority over the plebian class. The basic foundation of this belief was that the plebian class was ordained by birth to serve the patrician class. That it was their destiny, their place in the grand order of things and always would be.

While the Plebian class may not have had a formal type of religion designed to uplift their spirits, the discovery of the fifth scroll written by the lawgiver over 1,000 years ago has sparked a massive number of changes within their society. The most unusual is the formation of an outlawed quasi-religion centered on the lawgiver who was forced to flee their world. The lawgiver has taken on mythic importance to the plebian class and inspired new oppressive laws to keep them in line. Only time will tell how this will evolve and what the long term affects will be on their society.

Mythology

The first scroll defines the Garidians' code of honor. The second defines the relationship between the military and the government. The third scroll outlines the Garidians' religion. Finally, the fourth scroll defines the privileges and responsibilities of the Patrician class.

Garidian legend states that the Lawgiver also wrote a fifth scroll that outlined the rights and privileges of the Plebian class. However, the Patricians forced the Lawgiver and his followers to flee Garid, before he could reveal his fifth scroll.

With the discovery and return of this mythic fifth scroll, massive changes seem to be looming for the Garidian people and their society.

Society

Garidian society is split into two classes; Patricians (the upper class) and Plebians (the lower class). The structure of the society is based on the four scrolls written by the Lawgiver one thousand years prior to the 2360's.

The Patrician class makes up approximately 20% of the total population and lives in opulent splendor in exclusive areas with vast parks, museums, recreation and ultra-modern infrastructure.

The Plebians class makes up approximately 80% of the total population and lives in efficient, economical, small living units sandwiched side by side in towering apartment buildings or clustered together in cramped conditions in areas with minimal recreation, and barely adequate infrastructure.

While all of the population is entitled to and provided with the necessities of life including education, health care and social assistance the Patrician class get the best of the best while the rest of the population are provided with only what they need in order to live and succeed.

Culture

While instrumental music seems to be the most vibrant and celebrated form of artistic expression among them, there are others as well. The next most important is the mosaics and wall paintings that can be found almost everywhere. Most of these show realistic images of various types of landscapes.

Customs

Both classes, the Patrician and the Plebian have developed their own unique sets of customs. What has confused most experts is that there are almost no similarities between the customs of these two classes.

Technology

They are a sophisticated species with a well-developed educational process and numerous ongoing scientific research projects. Due to this they are considered to be almost equal to the Federation and the Romulans when it comes to their level of technological development.

Economy

Surprisingly enough the Garidians have a fairly well established merchant system and trade with a number of different species. Many of these trade deals are long term and have been in effect for a number of years. As a result they have a positive economic future and take great effort to ensure that this will continue.

Military

Garidian Warbird

Garidians generally make use of D'deridex-class warbirds supplied by the Romulan Star Empire as part of their military forces. These craft are often distinguished by their light gray paint scheme with flat red highlights on their hulls reminiscent of early Romulan spacecraft.

Other Warships

The Garidians did purchase a number of other Romulan ships but they also produce a number of destroyers and frigates of their own design as well. As a result just over half of their fleet is made up of ships purchased from the Romulans.

Federation Intelligence Files

In the 2360's, the Plebian-born social revolutionary, Lucana, believed that if she could recover the fifth scroll it could cause the oppressed lower class to rebel against their Patrician masters.

Eventually the Enterprise helped the revolutionists locate the Fifth Scroll. After an away team had discovered the original scroll Lucana sent a subspace message to Garid, which caused a revolution. Pentara traced the location and demanded the Enterprise return Avakar, Lucana and T'bak to her. Avakar convinced Pentara to deliver the scroll and him and his colleagues safely back to Garid, so that their people could benefit from the wisdom of the scroll.

Pentara later explained to Jean-Luc Picard that the situation on Garid was so bad that all those viewing the Fifth Scroll were being executed. She felt that her people needed something as powerful as the Unity Device to help the situation.

A Garidian warbird under the command of Gaidian Captain Pentara, intercepted the USS Enterprise-D and demanded the return of three Garidian nationals to her custody.
