History

Evan Delano's parents met while working on a civilian starship development project in New Berlin on Luna, where they began a short-lived affair that lasted for several weeks. His father, Kedall, ended the relationship and returned to his wife on Vulcan, ashamed of what he saw as as an "illogical, emotional outburst." When Evan's mother, Susan, later learned she was pregnant, she tried to contact Kedall, but never succeeded.

Susan returned to her home in Albany, New York where, in 2366, she gave birth to Evan.

Two years later, she married her childhood friend, Jim North. Evan resented his stepfather as a young child and refused to accept his last name. Though they later reconciled these differences, Evan still maintains the Delano surname.

Evan had a troubled childhood. His human parents had no method of effectively dealing with the erratic, sometimes violent mood swings brought on by his Vulcan half, and though counselors were brought in to help, Evan still struggled to connect with others and fell behind his class at school.

In 2374, Evan was arrested and charged as a juvenile for the assault of a classmate, who was severely injured during the confrontation. When the arbiter assigned to Evan's case threatened to place Evan in a juvenile facility, Susan, out of desperation, managed to make contact with Kedall.

Directed by logic, rather than emotion, Kedall convinced the arbiter to release Evan into his custody on the grounds that he take the boy to Vulcan to receive proper emotional training. Evan disliked the idea, but was intensely curious about the Vulcan half of his heritage, and his father.

Evan spent five difficult years on Vulcan. Though he struggled to fit in on Earth, he found Vulcan to be a much more difficult environment. Though his father and his family were never cruel, they were cold and distant; they viewed Evan as a symbol of Kedall's failure to control his emotions, and Evan's own emotions as a constant reminder of that weakness.

In addition to several key meditation techniques, Evan spent a significant amount of time learning suus mahna, a Vulcan martial art based on defensive and decisive movements. He immersed himself in the physical movements of the martial art and found that focusing on the physical movements of the various sutras was just as effective as the other more sedentary meditation techniques his father had taught him.

In 2379, following his first pon farr, Evan returned to Earth where the arbiter assigned to his case agreed that he had been sufficiently rehabilitated to return to his old life on Earth. In the intervening years, Susan had retired to spend more time with her husband, who maintained a ranch in southern Wyoming dedicated to the protection and rehabilitation of injured north american wildlife.

Evan spent four years in Wyoming, where he excelled in school, though he still struggled with making friends. After encouragement from one of his teachers, a retired starfleet officer, Evan took the preliminary entrance exam for Starfleet Academy. In 2379, he was invited to take the final entrance exam at Starbase 1. The results were mixed, but in the end, Evan was admitted as a first year cadet the following year.

At the Academy, Evan had to work harder than he ever had before to keep up with the rest of his class. He's been smarter than most of his human peers back home, but at the Academy, he was surrounded by the best of what the Federation had to offer. It was nearly overwhelming, and Evan was placed on Academic probation after his second semester, made only worse by Evan's second *pon farr *in 2386.

As a second year cadet, Evan continued to struggle; however, the faculty advisor for Evan's mixed martial arts club, Commander Tarla Dean, took the boy under her wing. Under Commander Dean's tutelage, he recovered from academic probation, and declared as a security major, and a comm/ops minor, believing the security core curriculum to be most suited to his strengths.

In 2389, Evan was assigned to the U.S.S Centaur for his first cadet cruise, which was to last nine months. Where Evan had struggled to keep up in the classroom, once on duty, Evan outpaced many of his peers. Captain Charlie Reynolds, the CO of the Centaur, was impressed by Delano, and bumped him up to chief of security during the second half of the training cruise. Only two months later, Evan was transferred to the holographic *U.S.S. Centris*on Starbase 118, where he would complete his training cruise.

Shortly before his transfer took effect, Captain Reynolds placed a letter in Cadet Delano's record. "Cadet Delano's record suggests he never found a place to fit in; he was of two worlds and of none," the last paragraph of the letter reads, "But by joining Starfleet, this young man has found his own place among the stars. He will be an exceptional officer."
