Personality

Elspeth is quite guarded and tends to speak in a short and clipped manner, using one-word sentences and gestures to get her meaning across. Her voice is low and gravely, as if she can't muster the energy to speak loud and clearly. When surprised or speaking 'normally', her voice is actually light and flute-like. She is curt, professional and organised; matter-of-fact, even. As a doctor her bedside manner leaves much to be desired, though this has really only been an issue for Starfleet - back home, this brusqueness is encouraged, even valued, by the patients she worked with.

She is a nearly obsessive perfectionist, and organisation is very important to her - she always arranges her desk in tiers of 3, her papers, files and important tasks likewise tiered. She tends to start organizing things on her own, rather bull-headedly, and dislikes seeing things ignored or not properly noted. She can be quite bossy and her frosty demeanor make her difficult to argue with.

Elspeth leads a very rich spiritual life, one that often seems bizarre to those in Starfleet. Her world is one of both science and spirits, where the world can be influenced through acts of sympathetic magic and knowledge. Her gifts as a doctor are ones she credits to her magical skill, rather than to her scientific education. To Elspeth, these things are not separate. She tends to find those who dismiss spiritualism out of hand to be short-sighted.

Away from her homeworld, Elspeth is cautious about the other aliens that populate Starfleet. With the Federation contact made only a few years ago, she is one of the first Kubarey to step out into the wider galaxy - something she often struggles with. She suffers from considerable homesickness, but cannot return til her mission is complete.

Background

Elspeth was originally born in the Kubarey capital, to rather normal parents; however, she is a rare breed of Kubarey known as the Ardash-kaar ('outlanders'), Kubarey born with four horns instead of the standard two. As is tradition, the baby Elspeth was given over to the cult of Jhalavastu, god of the outlands and of the underworld. This cult, populated entirely by Ardash-kaar, is both feared and respected. Its high priest is known as the Morath, a figure depicted to outsiders as having three heads with three eyes each.

As a baby in the cult she was brought up to serve Jhalavastu and the Morath, and her telepathic abilities awoke quite young. As a result she was put on the track for priesthood and initiated into the healers at 20, a quite young age.

Elspeth has spent the majority of her life in the cult's mountaintop temples, well away from the majority of Kubarey society. She was taken on as one of the Morath's apprentices, and her skill as a doctor was nurtured and encouraged. She was slated to be a Speaker - one of the priests who served directly under the Morath - until she got cold feet, too scared to undergo the body modification and tortuous rituals. She still sees this as her greatest failure, and at the time she was considered nearly sacrilegious for turning the post down. She remained at the temple and continued her training, but it wasn't quite the same.

Eventually, she left the compound to join the Kubarey military as a chaplain. She performed her duties admirably, both by the standards of the military and the Morath. When the Federation made contact 2391, the Morath had her return to the cult's compound, and there she was promoted to an Eye, a priest specifically tasked with being the Morath's eyes and ears wherever they are sent. Given that title, she was instructed to join the Federation, and to assess them. She lept at the chance to prove her faith.

Starfleet

After being initiated into Starfleet, Elspeth's first assignment was on board the USS Artemis, a Starfleet cargo hauler. While not a particularly glorious assignment, once she got the hang of the routine, she flourished. In the medical teams she was a gifted doctor, but her obsessive organisation led to an overhaul of the medbay's procedures and won her a commendation. She was eventually slotted not into medical, but into operations.

She's spent her time in Starfleet hopping back and forth between Operations and Medical, her last year spent as Chief of Medical aboard the USS Shanghai. Her captain had recommended her for a promotion and had suggested she would likely be best utilized at a large installation. Now Taybrim has to deal with her.
